It sounds like VQ is over-reacting like many of us here. We may well finish 5-7, or worse. There is still a lot of football to be played. We will improve. It remains to be seen how much. I am not ready to phone it in, just yet.VQ podcast was pretty sobering. I don’t think we’re gonna win but 5 games tops. May see a wholesale youth movement on defense.
You yourself have said he was a good recruiter. It turns out that he is not as good as we thought. But, let's see how these guys play the rest of the year. One narrative I'd like to see vanish like a fart in the win about Jones is that "Well, he couldn't coach, but he was a great recruiter!" No, he wasn't. Had no idea how to build a roster or project talent.
This might be your best post ever. Very well said. It's never as good or as bad as you think and VQ is a perfect example of that. Most of camp it was sunshine and ice T. Now it's gloom and doom. I have learned to pay very little attention to what nerds with computers have to say after seeing 10 minutes of warmups in practice. You have 4 guys that woudnt know how to put on a helmet Much less know what they are seeing in those 10 minutes
Yeah I definitely thought he was a good recruiter for awhile there. He was pretty good at making promises he knew he wouldn't be able to fulfill. Snake oil.You yourself have said he was a good recruiter. It turns out that he is not as good as we thought. But, let's see how these guys play the rest of the year.
I think your right about mental baggage. I taught 5th grade following a teacher that did not correct student's math assignments to show them what they were doing wrong. I would have to show them over and over then they would still revert back sometimes. It was easier to teach the ones that had never done something before. One thing that stood out this weekend is how quickly many players went back to default techniques. They were executing in camp-- which fueled the optimism-- but during the game, many players reverted to the poor tackling, bad angles and missed assignments that have plagued their careers at UT. When instincts took over, quality of play decreased.
So Austin is probably right about most of the older players. Poor technique and attitudes are deeply ingrained and not easily changed. The new guys are faster, seem highly coachable and have less mental baggage. They're the upside.
I’m not calling you out when i say this but i feel like “our DBs aren’t turning to look for the ball” has become a really lazy VN take. Sometimes you get there late and you don’t have time to do it. You don’t have to have your head turned to be in good coverage or position. There’s gonna be some times when you just can’t get turned around and that’s ok.
I thought Grier made about 5 perfect throws when we were in position or good coverage. That probably won’t happen with anyone else except for Tua this year. (Maybe locke).
You also have to realize Baylen is still a young player. He’s probably more suited to a zone scheme. I think he has more of a safety build but he can still be a productive player. Thompson is going to eventually be our #2 with Taylor full time. But baylen will still pay a lot.
The problem with our other safety/star spot that ab is in... we’ve got a lot of busts there. Theo or sham is probably the best of the bunch. But labruzza and TKjr are non factors
