I think Ferguson had enough natural talent throwing that he could have done well eventually. IMO Bajakian was a pretty good QB coach, so Ferguson would’ve gotten two years of good coaching at least. No way to say for sure.

Even with Dobbs, I think we probably should have fired Butch coming out of 2015 and made an upgrade that year to a better coach while the roster had talent to win immediately.

Either way, I like the staff we have now. Should be fun to see what they can get out of what Butch left them and the guys they’ve been able to add.

Agreed. We are definitely in a much better place and I am excited to see where things go this season. Im optimistic that this staff will be able to coach up the talent we have and put a much competitive product on the field.

There is an awakening going on in the media, that is why you see raised eyebrows even from Finebaum. He and the rest of the media see a real change happening. They know it, they see it, it is that obvious, but they can't say it yet, too much risk that CJP flames out in their view. So the coaching change is so obvious that even the media is taking note, but only taking note until they season starts and plays out. They will say only enough positive things so that if they season goes well they can point back to cryptic comments they made and say "we could tell it was happening we just didn't think it would happen this fast". They, at least the smart ones always leave themselves wiggle room so they can go either way. The dumb ones blurt out opinions as fact and then have egg on their face.

What has impressed me the most with Pruitt is how he sized up the weakness of the team and immediately went out and addressed it with JUCO or late adds to the '18 class. It has been mentioned many times on Volnation that he wants to win now. I believe it is more than that. He just looks at the weaknesses of the program and takes the simplest quickest way to address them, then goes out to coach them up. He did the same thing in assembling the staff. I am very, very impressed with what he has done, can't wait to see if translates the first season. I am optimistic.
Yeah, but Will West said all the narrative is going to be negative because CJP does not release much information to our most revered local media.

Very interesting to me that Tim Jordan is probably going to get the bulk of the carries and took most of the first team reps yesterday reportedly. I’m wondering they don’t try Chandler out in the slot receiver point at some point. Looks to me they really mean it when they want a bigger back. I just want No. 3 on the field. But I don’t think they even tried that out in the spring.

And Freakly as much as I love me some Ty Chandler, he doesn’t look as filled out physically that much differently from last year.

Thoughts?

All mods seem to be much more optimistic about this team already which is surprising to me, especially Hubbs, he's always the wet blanket and he sounds excited about this teams upside. Especially the OL, TE's, and DB's.

Taylor likely has one CB spot already locked up, it's possible George takes Buchanan's spot at the other CB spot. Price thinks before fall camp is over the starting safeties are Warrior and Flowers. That's 3 freshman DB's starting.

Guys that surprised them in the practice yesterday...Price said Warren looked really good catching passes from JG (thought he would be catching passes from Jancek). Simonton and Lewis praised Kongbo, said he looked really good standing up in his new position. Hubbs said it surprised him how comfortable Taylor looked at CB already.

Thanks for posting this, Ron. One (of the few) thing I miss about working day shift is being able to listen to the local sports talk, especially Hubbs on 104.5 every Wednesday at 8am...

I've listened to just about every link you've posted. Much appreciated, sir.

I’m just happy that the days of upperclassmen getting more playing time over a Freshman or Sophomore just because he’s a upperclassmen even though the younger guy is better, is over with.

Butch was bad here, but I still think he’d be a solid G5 coach if he finds the right place.

Tennessee was far too big for him and it showed. If he finds a G5 school that just wants him to make a bowl most years and occasionally get to 9-10 wins in a season, he could be have a long career at that level, IMO.

I still think he’d make a great ST coordinator as well.

Butch needs to be at a school that doesn't come with a lot of pressure, at least not one with the pagentry, tradition, and rabid fanbase like here.

I think most P5 programs are too big for him, honestly, and not a good fit for any SEC teams, outside of somewhere like UK or VU, where 8-9 win seasons get you multi-year contract extensions.

Ultimately, I think he's a better fit in a lower teir school that has seen some recent success but maybe not so much in the past, like Memphis, UCF, Arkansas State, et al.

I think Hurd would be killing it in this offense

We heard you the first time. 😊

Just read a David Ubben article about Mauer from when he committed. Apparently he fractured a bone in his foot 3 weeks before the Elite 11 performance where he ran a 4.6 forty and started showing out on the national scene. Pretty impressive. Also said he can dunk a basketball, which I guess isn't that impressive at 6'3 but somewhat so. And that he played qb last year at 177 lbs because of basketball but sat out bball this year and is already up to about 195 and should play over 200 this season.

I know it's common sense, but it was very refreshing to hear Coach Pruitt talking about the OL guys practicing at different spots. For those that didn't see it, he said (paraphrasing), "if you've got your 2-deep for offensive lineman and your backup right tackle is the 10th best OL player, and your starting right tackle gets hurt, you don't want to put your 10th best OL out there, you want to put your 6th best OL out there."

Butch would have had some kind of damn chart that tells him who to put in and spoken condescendingly, assuming that reporters and fans just don't have the football IQ to understand how those decisions are made.

Shouldn't ben too suprising on Taylor. He didn't play DB in HS. He just wanted to play WR but not like he never played the position before
