No, but that’s a straw man argument

It’s like me asking you if you think we could have averaged 50 ppg if Butch was not the coach.

The primary failure was OL coaching, S&C, and losing the team. Hiring Larry Scott at OC and micromanaging Shoop too.
I stand by my first statement. I don’t think his football knowledge is such that he adds much value to that coaching staff.

Take the name butch jones out of it....

84-54 61% win%
4-2 bowl games
11 win season
10 win season
Three 9 win seasons.

Do you honestly think that coach couldn’t add ANYTHING to your staff at all?

Monday morning podcast from VQ...

All mods seem to be much more optimistic about this team already which is surprising to me, especially Hubbs, he's always the wet blanket and he sounds excited about this teams upside. Especially the OL, TE's, and DB's.

Taylor likely has one CB spot already locked up, it's possible George takes Buchanan's spot at the other CB spot. Price thinks before fall camp is over the starting safeties are Warrior and Flowers. That's 3 freshman DB's starting.

Guys that surprised them in the practice yesterday...Price said Warren looked really good catching passes from JG (thought he would be catching passes from Jancek). Simonton and Lewis praised Kongbo, said he looked really good standing up in his new position. Hubbs said it surprised him how comfortable Taylor looked at CB already.

15-0

I get Nick’s point, but I still agree with Laager. The offensive brains were Debord and Bajakian (who both jumped ship and immediately found jobs) and special teams was Elder.

Let’s not forget the awesome genius of Butch Jones insisting on adhering to his infallible system and running the zone read with Worley instead of finding a way to adapt to the roster on hand.

Zone read. Worley.

Kenneth George? The guy that didn't start in high school? Holy crap what a find if he turns out to be a good ballplayer

Our special teams were really good the whole time butch was here. With or without elder. Also, who was the OC when we were running the zone read with Worley. You can’t give jake credit for the good but not blame for the bad.

Last I will say on it because I just don’t care enough to keep it going.....

Did you see our offense last year?? Did that look like a coach that had a clue to you?

The offense anytime Josh Dobbs wasn’t the QB. His offense might work in the group of 5 but it isn’t an sec caliber offense. At least not the way butch ran it

VQ podcast noteworthy stuff (IMO).

  • JG best attribute displayed yesterday was ability to move on to the next play, which CJP has been harping on him. Threw an INT then next play threw a bomb for a TD. Doesn't hang his head after a bad play.
  • Starting secondary prediction for WVU: Baylon Buchannon, Alontae Taylor, Nigel Warrior, Travon Flowers. Bryce Thompson running with the twos. They all to a man agreed AT is a starter week 1.
  • Staff working overtime to get Jordan Allen ready. He's the "next man up" at OLB.
  • Kirkland looks fine physically. Him, Bituli, and Sapp in the middle is a strong unit.
  • Bituli lining up as an edge rusher in the dime package.
  • Two freshman Dl the staff highest on seems to be Kurott Garland and John Mincey. Both got a lot of playing time on Sunday.
  • TKJr and Abernathy have to play "mentally flawless" because neither has the physical ability to recover from mistakes.
  • Jacob Warren was heavily involved in the passing game. Caught more balls and made more plays than Eli Wolf. Bumphus had a rough day. Austin Pope will be a big factor.
  • Jerome Carvin - the staff is slowly bringing him back from the foot injury.
  • RB's.... hard to tell without pads. London got more run than Banks. Slow footed, but a big kid. Jordon got a lot of run with the ones. Not the most explosive but most athletic "big back." RBs' caught the ball out of the backfield well.
  • One guy who surprised you the most Sunday - Price said Jacob Warren. Simonton said Kongbo. Hubbs said Kongbo. Lewis said Alontae Taylor.

Thanks for the highlights bud!

I remember when TKJr was a ballhawk. Just another guy who has seemingly regressed during his career.

True, but Jake was also good enough to land a job in the pros afterwards, and wasn’t the one who kept on about an infallible system. That leads me to believe that the zone read/Worley stemmed from Butch. Could be I be wrong? Sure.

The only thing I can think of would be bringing an intricate knowledge of a Rich Rod/Brian Kelly spread offense for Saban to dissect.

Regarding the brains behind the offense being DeBord and Bajakian, you can only speculate on that. We know it sure wasn’t Scott 😂

Listen, we all know the glaring flaws. Worley never keeping the read option was stupid. The goal line shotgun at Florida was insane. Certain FG and game click issues... there’s a lot.

I’m just looking at it objectively. And the fact is, player execution absolutely blew games. Two Florida games given up on last second plays, almost loss the UGA game with JJ, Fumble crazy against A&M... if you’re going to try to wipe away great plays made by players, go ahead and wipe away those also. It’s futility. It is what it was.

Truth is, Butch was head coach when there were two record setting quarterbacks (LeFevour & Dobbs) starting for him at different programs. Credit where due, IMO

Anyways, I’m glad we have a staff who can develop, unlike the clown show we had, and an actual S&C staff... not just an intern

I agree with this. His issue was of being a system coach. As a HC he could not adapt outside of what the system provided. He can add to any program from an administrative and expertise in his coaching specialties. I'm sure he is trying to learn how Saban does it to build into his next system. Saban is getting some added value on UT's dime. It's win-win for them with it being a win-loss for us because we win with him being gone and CJP taking over while losing because we have to keep paying him millions for years. If he can be rehabbed into a HC somewhere again reasonably soon we may have some offset of that buyout.

1) no idea how many turnovers KC had could've been more than JG could've been less
2) fans want JG so they'll take any positive JG. Also, is been so long since we've had a good QB (Dobbs was an excellent athlete not QB) that I don't our media knows what one looks like anymore
I disagree. Dobbs was a good enough QB to get drafted in the NFL. I also am not convinced that all the fans want JG to start. I do know that those posters on KC train tend to be very biased against JG. I just think we're a better team if JG performs well enough to win the job as he has a higher upside IMO.

Vince’s View
-There was a lot to digest and go back and study from Sunday’s open practice at Neyland Stadium. I will limit them to just some of the biggest takeaways and then I’ll share some more specifics throughout the rest of preseason practices.

-As Jeremy Pruitt told us before the practice, there’s been some good and some not so good with the quarterbacks. I thought as a group, they were good not great. They definitely weren’t as consistent as the coaches want.

-Redshirt sophomore QB Jarrett Guarantano had some good throws down the field, like a deep ball TD to Josh Palmer, a 30-yard seem route to Jordan Murphy, some slants and a few sideline routes. Guarantano has more arm strength and elusiveness than Chryst. When decisive, he can get the ball out to the perimeter in a hurry. He was also picked off by freshman CB Alontae Taylor, threw one deep ball to Brandon Johnson too much on a line that was well incomplete, he sailed some throws and had some completions that were high throws, which I’ve also seen in the first two practices. Guarantano looks more confident and decisive than a season ago, but the massive progression does not appear to be there yet, albeit very early in practice.

-Redshirt senior QB Keller Chryst was a little more accurate than Guarantano I thought. He hits more guys in stride on crossing routes and checkdowns. The numbers were likely very similar, but the spot of the throws is where Chryst was sharper. He had a pretty deep ball TD pass to walk-on Brent McPherson that was dropped in the bucket where only the receiver could get it. There were rough moments for him too. He also was picked-off by freshman CB Alontae Taylor. Baylen Buchanan nearly picked Chryst off on an errant throw to the outside on nearly an identical pass as the INT. Chryst has nice poise under pressure and didn’t take as many chances with the ball. There were numerous times, in 7-on-7, where he didn’t see an open receiver, tucked it and ran.

-Sophomore QB Will McBride and true freshman JT Shrout had some nice throws and some struggles. Shrout has the stronger arm, I think, but McBride was the more accurate of the two. Both were like the older two QBs, ok but inconsistent.

-The coaches are judging the quarterbacks on much more than what we see from our vantage point. They’re looking for them to make the proper reads, see the right open receivers, make smart decisions, get them into the right plays, make teammates better, show proper fundamentals in footwork and arm release, etc. Guarantano saw the most work with the 1s. I didn’t see much to help or hurt that.

Warren was looking at a RS, but now that he's bulked up and looking good in practice, it sounds like he might make the rotation. Being an EE really helped with his S&C and the new RS rule will give him more PT. Good to see local kids do well.

The new RS rule will be big for him. He’s still probably a year away from being a part of the rotation, but getting some reps during our 3 OOC cupcakes.
