Why would Saban do that though? It's not like he couldn't have just said no to the idea, right?

Quid pro quo. If you have the top power agent who gets you whatever you want and he asks you to do a small favor with minimal consequence, you do it. It's NBD to you and it can pay off down the road.

Bama has a huge budget for endless support staff, and other schools don't. Saban can pay Butch peanuts, stick him in a closet office and have him analyze charts. Maybe that gives Saban a bit of perverse pleasure or maybe he's just favor-banking it-- either way, I doubt he considers it a coup for Bama. IDT we'll be seeing a lot of Butch decked out in Bama gear or tweeting catchphrases with #RTR.

That makes sense. There's no way Saban really thinks he can bring much of anything to the table. I think Jones is probably a joke amongst many in the coaching community.

Saban collects former head coaches like most people collect crap in our junk drawer in the kitchen.

They are going to expect championships sooner rather than later. When they don't happen the fans will turn on the AD for that stupid excuse for a contract. It feels like it was more a publicity stunt than a real contract.

Yup, they already gave Jimbo a plaque with a blank date congratulationing him on a national championship win. That fan base will turn real quick if he can’t get them competing for championships.

Edit: swansoned

So true. Ironically, he paid lukewarm compliments to Kiffin and Sark when he hired them. With Butch, he was quick to point out that he didn't know or care what his title was and made it clear Butch wasn't going anywhere near the field.

Agreed.. IMO JG still has a lot of potential to be a good QB. I don't see that upside in Chryst. I do think it is a very sound move for competition and depths sake.

This is what it is. If he wins the job and we win games then that works as well. Coach wants viable competition everywhere because that will push all wit the correct makeup and mindset to get better.

Sexton brokered a deal. Butch was going to volunteer as an unpaid assistant coach at Catholic, which constituted a failure to mitigate. So Sexton worked a loophole and leveraged an arrangement between two clients that allows Butch to collect his full buyout from UT without having to actually coach.

Watch Saban's comments to the media. He looks like he's been served some bad sushi. He goes out of his way to diss Butch by calling him an intern and makes it clear that he won't be coaching or on the field.

Not surprised by this. SOME agents are part of what's bad in football, IMO.

Wish I had finished reading the thread before posting. Thanks LA.

You have to do that when recruiting transfers especially ones with one year left. I’m not saying Pruitt and co told him “you’re our starter no matter what” but it had to be something like “we don’t know our QBs or whatever so you have a very good chance to start”.

Then that’s not the same thing as what you previously posted. “Good chance” is fairly open ended. Bet Guarantano has heard or will hear the same words directed at his his ears before Fall Camp. :)

didn't CJP cover this the other day in the presser? "everyone is competing for a job", or something of that ilk?

i doubt seriously we're promising anything to anyone at this point.

didn't we just get done with that experiment...it doesn't work.

I think you mentioned Stanford throws to the RBs a lot earlier and were countered with Brice Love stats. But if you look at the box scores from last year McCafferey led them in receptions in almost every game Chryst started. So you weren't really wrong about that.

Here is every pass attempt from his best career game against someone other than Rice. 2016 Oregon game. I believe I counted 2 or 3 attempts beyond 10 yards. Admittedly he did have 2 pretty nice medium to deep TDs in this one.

I formed my impression of their offense based on when McCaffery was there...so yeah. :hi:

Clearly he should know Butch and charts don’t go well together after coaching against him for 5 seasons....

I have zero problems with Butch being an intern/analyst for Saban. I encourage it. Maybe he can "help" them out like he did us.

CJP is not a wannabe like the previous two hires. He's brought an elite system with top coaches and instilling much needed player discipline. The sun has come up on the program.

Our role is simple. Support UT and the team. Move on from the past decade of futility and leave the baggage behind. I would lots rather see the back and forth about JG versus Chryst on here than associating future team performance with past garbage. Besides, it would drive some of you insane if McBride or Shrout won the job.

:)

I won’t blindly support this football program anymore before seeing results.....

J/k..... I will

I still believe that Chryst was basically assured he will start at some point this year. Pruitt has seen JG first hand. Helton has seen Chryst. There’s a reason we wanted him and he came here after 1 visit.
