I still wonder what an above average coach could have done with those 2015 and 2016 rosters. Butch gets credit for assembling those rosters, but only winning 9 games in 2016 years ago is still more of mindf@#$ to me than only winning four this year.

Those two late season losses in 2015 and 2016 really exposed Jones as pedestrian gameday coach, and 2017 really showed how bad of of a coach he was with above average talent (instead of exceptional talent the previous two years).

He's pretty good at hype (which gets old), and mediocre at actual football. I'm baffled by why Saban would even deal with that.

who knows. the saddest part about all of that was, if Butch Jones had 6 games go his way those first 4 years, things would be soooo different for him and us.

you think about the games he had opportunities to get a signature win.... 13 GA, 14 FL, 15 OU, 15 FL, 15 Bama, 16 aTm. but you lose all those, AND you lose inexplicably to Vandy, KY, ARK, MO, USCe etc....

what a waste. hell, you can justify losing some of those games, frustrating as it was. but you don't even have to win them all. win 2 or 3 of them, and win all those games you're supposed to...and the narrative is completely different.

but no, not only could Butch not get any of those signature wins, he also couldn't prevent losing to the bottom of the league.

that's not a recipe for success.

good luck Bama. you got all the other championships, now you have the life championship guru to boot.

Anyone have an answer to this one?? I sure don't...

Sexton brokered a deal. Butch was going to volunteer as an unpaid assistant coach at Catholic, which constituted a failure to mitigate. So Sexton worked a loophole and leveraged an arrangement between two clients that allows Butch to collect his full buyout from UT without having to actually coach.

Watch Saban's comments to the media. He looks like he's been served some bad sushi. He goes out of his way to diss Butch by calling him an intern and makes it clear that he won't be coaching or on the field.

Plenty of teams have turned it around in one season. I choose to believe Pruitt and staff can do it as well. Screw the doom and gloom. If the kids buy in they will be a tough out.

Oline is in better shape than when Kiffin was here and he was a field goal away from beating Bama. It can be done.

How do you come to the conclusion that the OL is in better shape than when Kiffin was here? This is the worst UT OL I have ever seen...Trey Smith was the only player worth a crap on the line and we don't have a clue if he is going to be available.

interesting take. and certainly does nothing to help the "he's doing what's best for the family" angle.

lol.

Thanks for the post. I can understand why Butch did it and why Sexton pushed for it, but I'm still having difficulties understanding why Saban would be a party to it.

Fair to agree to disagree. Just Our opinions. I just don’t think i guy like Chryst comes to TN at this point unless he has been told basically “you’re starting”. Especially considering our OC has seen him up close and personal for the last few years. Idc who ends up being The qb. I just hope whoever it is performs.

Definitely fair to agree to disagree. Chryst said they only promised him an open competition. As far as choosing us, not sure how many options he had. There were zero other schools that reached out to him from what I've seen. I think he is good for depth but I don't believe he will be the starter unless jg gets hurt.

Then we’re f*€£{D! If our new coaches are promising starting jobs without competition. Fans (rightly) ripped Butch for special allowances for certain players and rumored promises during recruitment! Guess HillBillyDude ain’t too far off. :thud:

You have to do that when recruiting transfers especially ones with one year left. I’m not saying Pruitt and co told him “you’re our starter no matter what” but it had to be something like “we don’t know our QBs or whatever so you have a very good chance to start”.

Well since you said it, and since I find it a ridiculous statement..why don't you expound on it and see if you can change my mind.

If you go to LaTech and get paid relatively good money to coach football and do a good job, you can then use that as a stepping stone to a better job and a bigger payday. I don't see how being a lowly intern anywhere gets you any closer to a big payday.

IMO "intern"=help steer recruits away from UTK and do whatever else you can to screw the people who fired you without doing anything that jeopardizes the buy out.

Agreed.. IMO JG still has a lot of potential to be a good QB. I don't see that upside in Chryst. I do think it is a very sound move for competition and depths sake.

Just the inside info to UTs infrastructure has to be worth a little. Not that they couldn't get that same info from Bama Dave. I still don't get it..I get the Sexton angle, but not why Saban would go along except as a scratch yours, you scratch mine down the road deal..

Why would Saban do that though? It's not like he couldn't have just said no to the idea, right?

Fwiw i don’t have a problem with Butch being at bama in his role. It’s a win win for him. Get to see up close the best program in football. So he gets to learn. He also gets to have more time to build a potential staff and contacts for his next gig. It could’ve have just boiled down to he didn’t like the jobs he was offered.

250lb Sullin twins if I remember correctly. Just remember everyone in an uproar over undersized twins having to play. Hopefully you are wrong about them. I have to agree that they could have been charged with attempted manslaughter. JG almost got killed.
