Mass shooting of the week, high school in parkland, FL.

The debate needs to start with gun control. Only after rational minds are allowed to prevail, will we have even a remote chance of addressing the problem.

To claim that gun laws and regulations have no impact on the issue is beyond absurd.

If anything remotely helpful to this situation is going to happen, further gun control has to be taken off the table. Conservatives will not accept any solution that suggests it and the whole debate will stall.

I'd rather try to get something both sides agree on that actually helps.

No, the debate needs to start with both sides willing to give on issues. GV and I started a horse trading debate on this topic and progress can be made, but the issue isn't as simple as either side would have you believe.

Okay, tomorrow we ban EVERY gun on the market. No more mass shootings correct?? :loco:

Because some people are crazed idiots with the desire to cause as much death and destruction as humanly possible. There has always been that type, and there always will be.

Ok, shouldn't the first step be identifying these "crazed idiots" and finding out what made them "crazed idiots" then changing whatever is making them "crazed idiots" so we can stop producing more "crazed idots"?

No! The first step is finding out what drives people to do such things. You can't fix a ****ing problem until you know what causes it!

Once you know what causes a problem then you an debate the fix.

Because you believe gun control is the first and only answer. When, in fact, it's multi faceted as CWV pointed out.

If your gut reaction in these situations is to automatically jump to the gun control chapter and verse, nothing will get done as people will tune you out.

I never said only....and that's a critical point.

Nothing does ever get done because many automatically tune out any discussion of reasonable gun control.

Every time there is another incident like yesterday, the disgust directed toward the NRA zealots grows. That makes the zealots dig in even more deeply, and the nation suffers.

My favorite statue of all time is the one in OK City of Jesus that simply says Jesus Wept. We need a replica of that statue at every sight of a mass killing and on the floors of the house and senate every time gun laws and regulations are debated.

I am perfectly willing to consider both sides of the equation. It is you that is demonstrating the inability to do so.

When you find an inanimate object that can willfully and successfully carry out a murdering spree, then your “gotcha” argument can be discussed.

I’ll acknowledge there is a problem, but I use common sense to navigate it, not a politically aligned, narrative-driven approach.

And if access is the problem, what are your plans for vehicles, homemade pipe bombs, hardware/tools, chemical agents, etc.? The point is, if anyone has the desire to murder, limiting their options will only enhance their creativity.

Please, counsel, let’s hear how you preclude these acts by limiting access?

You don’t!

I’m not going to type out my thoughts entirely, but the debate starts and ends in these distinctly separate, but overlapping, areas:

-Mental illness
-Media coverage
-Cultural/societal indoctrination
-Poor LEO/FBI judgment and inaction

See, there’s plenty of blame to go around.

That's being done and a better job needs to be done.

Same with gun control.

If you required registration the sales could be monitored. That doesn't encroach on the second.

Not really in favor of a hefty ammo tax either. Clip capacity is another thing that could be regulated and taxed.

Under the current laws the mentally ill have to have shown violent behavior and gun ownership rights would have to be revoked by the court.

Taxes usually are recommended by those that won't feel the effect.

I guess if you're using slugs, by why not just use a rifle? He had a 30.06 so why would you want to use a shotgun with a scope. Unless he meant a red dot sight.

Referencing my reply to your post, rifles are illegal to use hunting in many states. Ohio just recently allowed the use of rifles but you can only use those that shoot pistol cartridges. If he is using a shotgun for mass murder he is talking a laser or red dot as you suggest. The kid was mentally ill. Why no one reported him is beyond me. It appears that there was an ample trail to lead law enforcement to this kid way before this happened.

The issue is the individual and the individual's actions. Period. The manner in which the act was carried out is irrelevant to the act itself.

We need to address the issue which is lonely and woefully impaired people who are incapable of an outlet, in their minds, other than killing as many innocent people as they can. They want the pain and emotional turmoil to be felt by others.

Aside from the individual, what about the parents? They are a factor in the violence, just as the guns used were. They play a part in why and how this individual was what he was, to an extent. Because why, ultimately the individual will do what they will regardless of whether or not the parents were involved and caring and normal human beings. Aside from calling the police on their son, they are just another factor in this atrocity, maybe blame can be assigned, maybe not, but, the individual is solely responsible for his/her actions.

Sometimes, we as a people need to understand there is nothing other than the simplicity in understanding that there are some humans who just are wired wrong, incapable of processing life and compartmentalizing emotions and actions, and no matter what aside from institutionalizing or killing them will stop them from bringing their hate and disdain for just life, and being born, onto others. If there is treatment great, but, we need to get these types to that treatment by trying to figure out who is a candidate for such an act well before the signs appear.

Let's try and keep the opinions and responses on anything other than name calling guys. I know emotions run high, but, let's try and discuss opinions in just that matter, as that is what they are. Let's try and just tolerate one another at least.

His adoptive parents have passed away.

A study of what? The brain chemistry of mass killers? Google it.
So then let's suppose that there is a genetic preponderance to being a killer. What then? Does the .gov (you and I... well me anyway) pay for their treatment? And since it will probably be some kind of orphan drug, those treatments will cost thousands and thousands of dollars, and there is NO guarantee these ass clowns will take their meds. Then what? They are a burden on the taxpayers, and treatment will guarantee nothing.

So you just pulled that out of your ass.

What are you talking about?

If you want to know what studies are being done or have been done on the brain chemistry of mass killers, then google it.

If you want to know what personality traits seem to be common or what warning signs are available, google it.

Common medications? google it

Childhood traumas? google it

What are you even looking to have answered?

What could law enforcement have done? Throw him in jail for posting on youtube?

Correct! He LEGALLY bought it. What good did your background check do? What good did any of the laws on the books do? The only thing that will stop those intent on mass murder is to hit them with equal force.

He wants to ban assault rifles. Still waiting for the definition.
