I am of the opinion that you cannot go wrong with a Glock. Simple, easy to break down and clean, and as reliable as they come. I'm not a big fan of the .380, as I'm big on stopping power, so I favor the .45. Then again, a .380 round through the right eye is usually a show-stopper, so to each their own. Like Colonel Cooper said, fast is fine, but accuracy is final.

No matter what you carry, practice with it under the worst and most stressful conditions you or your range master can create. Do that, and the scales tip in your favor when it really counts.

I agree with you on the .45 and have a SR1911 and a Colt Defender both in .45. Love both but I was thrust into a situation where I needed a subcompact ASAP. I planned on a micro 9mm but a couple of range visits convinced me that I am not competent with that caliber in a subcompact pistol.

Yeah, I had the chance to pick up a Defender a year or so back, and just couldn't force myself to part with the $. Wish I had that one to do over.


Anyhoo...so I spring my most recent acquisition on my bride, and she asks me "How many .45's do you need?". Me not thinking at that point, I reply with "Well, how many purses do YOU need?"

Anybody know where I can sell a handgun that has never been fired? I recently got it from my father who is ill and would like to go through the proper channels rather than a pawn shop as an example.

Pawn shop is likely not going to go above 50% of what they think it's worth. What you might want to consider is a consignment sale through a local, reputable gun/sports store. A reputable one would probably put it on the shelf for close to what it's worth, and maybe only charge a 10% commission. Just an idea.

Good luck with it. I'd ask you what the gun is, but after buying that SA, I've been told that I'm on "gun probation" until further notice...

Put a HiPoint .45ACP carbine on layaway. I’ve been wanting one and the price is right. HiPoint’s lifetime warranty helps, too. I’ve read on user forums that they will honor their warranty beyond the original purchaser.

I have the exact same gun on layaway (along with two others haha). Love the idea of a carbine in 45 ACP.

Picked up the S&W .38 Bodyguard for the wife today. Nice gun; love the Crimson Trace laser. Fits the hand nice, nice balance, etc.

We'll see how it shoots, but this is a 5 yd gun, and I think my better half is going to be (a) pleased, and (b) instant rehabilitation for any fool that thinks he's found an easy mark at the mall. She already knows how to shoot, and can handle any of my .45's almost as well as I can. Keeper.

Nothing like a woman who buys you an SSA-e trigger for Christmas. She gets it.

And finally got to shoot the Springfield 1911 .45 Range Officer model I just picked up. That gun will make you think you're better than you probably are.

It won't work for CC, but I have a new favorite sidearm.

Ha. Now you know, this makes three .45's for me. First was the RIA compact. Shoots good. I was surprised by how light the trigger was (can't be 3 lbs), and of course even as a compact, that chunk of metal is easy to control.

You also know my long-term love affair with the 1911, so...

Next came the Glock 30S. Right before that, my duty weapon was the Clock 21C (compensated). .45...13 rounds...Glock reliability...comped gun. What's not to like? But for CC, I had to downsize, so I went with the LASO version of the 36, which is the 30S. Long trigger pull takes time to get used to, but 10+1 in that size its too good to pass up, so...

You know the story on how I got the SA. Owning a full-size 1911 has been on my bucket list for a while. I got lucky, and after breaking it down, cleaning it, and blessing it with Rem Oil, I ran a box of 230 gr. ball through it today. Oh my goodness. What a sweet gun. Honestly, I think Stevie Wonder could shoot a 280 with it.

Dark side? I think not. I'm in love.

Once again, GV, good call. Thanks. I'll let you know about the SSA-e once I've had the chance to try it.

Got Hogues on both. Bought them for the RIA, SA came with them (plus the original grips).

Beyond grips, reliable mags, and maybe improved sights (not yet on either one), I'm old-school. I carry a .45 because they don't make a .46, and I have seen first-hand what a .45 will do to a human, so I'll take the weight and recoil with the knowledge that if I hit you, I win.

You've spent a lot of my money over the past, what...two years? Give me a few months to get NFCU paid off, and then we'll talk.

given your background and work, you probably know several armorers that change sights on the 1911, but Novaks in West Virginia, does a great job...

Nice. Mine came used, and according to SA, was manufactured in 2013, but I'd be surprised if it had 100 rounds put through it. I noticed that the wooden grips on mine did not have the "Range Officer" stamp at the bottom, but SA says they will sell them to me if I want them. Meh. Mine came with Hogue combat grips, which I left on there.


If you're a ".45 veteran", then you know how there's always a little bit of rattle when you wiggle a 1911. Not with that gun you've got. It locks up solid and tight. And for some reason, the recoil doesn't seem to be as heavy as I remember from my old 1911A1.

Yeah, this is probably the most glaring gap in my "National Defense Policy"; I'm not set up for a low-light engagement. I know I need to address it, but the RIA has standard 1911 sights, so what do I do about that Godawful front blade? My Glock has the standard white "ball in a cup" sights. There is a Telluric facility here that can change the 30S over to night sights, but I can't make my mind up on what I want. Three dot? And while you can change out the front blade (and rear) on the SA, it's just so doggone gorgeous that all I can make myself do is leave the Hogue grips on it.


And yes, I've heard Novak's are well worth the money. Thanks for the advice.
