Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVIII

Your number 1 makes no sense, good grief have you seen some of our choices and your calling Gruden risky? Sorry that doesn't fly with me AT ALL! Good grief saying Miles isn't any more risky than Gruden is crazy talk, and I know all the he hasn't coached college or recruited. I could give a rebuttal but it has been done a million times. But please I don't want to here risky hire, we have hired Dooley and Jones. Tried to hire Schiano and the Dorean. And Morris,Miles, and any other coach we go after is risky. Good grief.:thud:

I don't agree. Someone like Miles or Cutcliffe would be a safe hire relatively speaking.

Morris is risky but I don't think he's legitimately a contender.

So, I'm more basing that on the difference between a coach that has recently won a national title and more than 73% of his games and one that hasn't coached in a decade. From a risk/reward perspective Miles is the safe hire and Gruden is the risky hire. Personally, I acknowledge there is a high risk high reward factor with Gruden and I accept that. I'm all in. I just don't think Fulmer will be as willing to accept that risk given everything we've been through the past decade. Moreover, the big barriers I see with Fulmer hiring Gruden are his salary requirements and control.

If Miles were 10 years younger with those credentials he would be the grand slam hire.

Fulmer realizes the wrath of VN and it doesent need to happen again this early in his AD career. There is absolutely no way Morris is a legit candidate. Nothing about Morris says committed to championships. There are candidates who get legit interviews and those who get fluff interviews. Morris is the fluff

Don't shoot me. I've been looking more at him from a statistical standpoint and he's been doing extremely well. Jeff Brohm well.

Seriously, I know nothing but I do know Gruden is the #1 target. If he wants to be here, he will! If not we move on to the next guy.......it’s not like Gru wants to coach and we go in another direction to save a few bucks.

I don't want a coach that truly does not want to be here. I believe there are coaches available with "fire in their bellies" to be a VOL, that would prove to be much more successful in the long run.

He's where he needs to be right now. You don't commit to change and walk Morris out. If you do your no better than the man you replaced

I'm one of the 'don't sweat what you can't control, just do the next right thing' crowd.

If we've offered Jon all that it seems we have and he turns us down, I'll be disappointed for moment but this has been a historical moment in collegiate sports and we were a part of it. Puppet master Haslam has a lot of his strings cut and we've got Orange Blood at the helm.

Fulmer might not be the best candidiate for a AD position but I think he's perfect for this particular coach search and will get behind what he brings to the table.

Gruden till it ain't

No matter what CPF decides, we need to get behind him and support his decision. I trust that he will do what is best for the University and the football program. Remember this quote from his "resignation" press conference? "I love Tennessee too much to let her stay divided." After all the shat he's been through I think we'll lucky to even have him back in this role.

No. If it's an underwhelming (Chad Morris) type hire, I won't support it, or the person that made it.

That said...I don't think we go that way.

The first post of this thread says your agreement isn't worth much... I have no desire to be part of the limelight just trying to keep updated on Gruden.

I didn’t mean to imply that you were and agree that you were following the guidelines of this thread, which differ a bit from other threads.

Why should we give Fulmer a pass on a no-name hire when we wouldn't do it for Currie?

Does Chad Morris all of a sudden seem like a home run if Phil is the one bringing him in? No, he seems exactly like he did last week.

I trust Phil to make a better hire... But a bad hire doesn't turn into a good hire just because Phil's name is on the contract.

I think everyone needs to chill and be patient. A few thoughts:

1. Quote by goinuponatuesday at 10:09 am on 11/26/17 (Schianamo day):

Off record I told a handful of people that Sunday leaks, Monday goodbyes, Tuesday hi's...... those few people are on volnation. Speak up if your on this morning....

Hence, the original plan, if you believe Gruden was on board, was leaks last Sunday, he says goodbye on MNF, then presser on Tuesday. Obviously Currie blew this plan all to hell.

2. Nobody knows anything right now:

This Thornton info about Gruden has not been confirmed by anyone with e-cred that we know of ... someone just strolled in dropped that bomb and basically got ran off. That info is nowhere else and I have not seen nor heard anything close to that.

I am suggesting that there hasn't been a "no" said yet. I haven't heard anything come from the Gruden camp in terms of any "leaks". My source(s) are comprised of an AD contact, boosters, and past VFLs close to the program and those in charge.

I am not saying it is Gruden or it isn't. Its been oddly quiet this morning from everyone. I did have one former RB text me and say he thought Les with Steele and Tee. I asked if Gruden said no, and he said no. I asked why he thought Les and said him and Fulmer have always been close.

My assumption, I think Gruden hasn't answered yet (as I don't know the time frame of his deadline) or, he has accepted and they have kept it totally quiet.

That is my knowledge up to this point and my assumptions. Just trying to pass along what I have heard and am told. I am wanting to know just like you guys. I have nothing to gain in this..... other than bragging that UT football is back to my childhood friends.

There has been radio silence, or admissions that they don't know anything, from anyone who would know anything and who has any level of trust on here. Does everyone forget that the one guy who is universally accepted to be the most connected guy on here, Atlanta Vol, hasn't been heard from since the Schianamo began? He also told us a long time ago that he would never break the news on here that Gruden was our next coach. He did insinuate, however, that he would tell us if it fell through. Silence is not a bad thing.

3. If Gruden had planned to say a public farewell on MNF last week, then that had to have been already planned for with at least someone at ESPN (producers, etc.). If he is in fact giving UT a final answer today, then he could very well go back to the original plan for tonight's broadcast. In the alternative, he could publicly address the Grumors and squash them tonight if he has changed his mind.

4. The key question is, if he accepts our "new" offer, how the original plan is handled regarding leaks. Because this whole idea was so cloak and daggar, and laughed off by so many in the media, the leaks were obviously planned in order to prime the world for the idea that it really could be possible. Hence the 10:00 am CBS story last Sunday. Had the Schianamo not occurred, I'm sure we would have had something juicier come out later that day pointing toward it actually being real.

If Gruden says yes, and he still wants this to happen, we should hear something in the media soon. Or he could have changed his mind about the leak process and just drop a bomb out of nowhere on MNF.

Either way, we're nearing the end of this journey. Everyone breathe a little and resist being blown about by little gusts of wind from any direction. We were part of a ReVOLution last week, and regardless of what happens from here on out, our beloved University and football program is back in good hands.

We will know something for certain SOON...

My guess is yes on both. Phil wanted Miles from jump and it's always been Miles.

I agree with this, if we get swerved and it is Gruden, that would be the coup of the century, but my gut says it's Miles and the silence today is about finding assistants.
