Yes, the deal was pretty much done. All Currie had to do was reach out!

So Currie meeting in Tampa. Signed. MOU. Jets. Assistants. Blackberry Farms. Asheville etc. was all false? All Currie had to do is ask?

I'm sorry. I'm not being crude like a lot here. I just can't wrap my mind around this notion.

Absolutely. First of all we have a lot in common with AU. We both hate Bama, Georgia and Florida I went to SEC championship in 2004. I went to Tiger walk with my son who is an Auburn fan and was wearing a Manning jersey. I had no problems at all with AU fans

I was there too.....the good ole days!

If Currie wanted to be the hero, he’d crawl back to Gruden and beg him to be the coach. To me, this is the perfect time to appease the fans. Do what you said you’d do to begin with.

I have no idea. To me... this has blown up in Currie’s face. Davenport backing off saying she didn’t sign. Gov. Haslam saying his brother wasn’t involved or whatever. Looks like Currie is taking the fall.

Someone else posted — not sure if true — that in 2012 Gruden’s agent came out and said he wasn’t asked or whatever.

There is too much smoke, too much insider info to have been a complete con job by some internet pranksters or people wanting eCred.

I think a bunch of wealthy people are very mad and UT looks like fools.

And I think Gruden being quiet this whole time is just weird. Maybe not telling. But weird.

Lol...why? He has absolutely nothing to do with UT other than many fans wanted him to be coach.

Stop looking for signs that aren't there.

I'm telling you guys, Schiano was his number one from the start and they honestly thought it was going to be awesome. I don't think Currie even asked Gruden, Kelly, Peterson, or Patterson. John Currie and the rest of them in charge genuinely thought this was a "homerun." They're that tone deaf. Basically because he's from Ohio State and is next in line for Sexton's P5 HC list we're supposed to be impressed.

and worse than that, Currie/Haslam lied and double-crossed the boosters who worked for a Gruden deal.

the person in the AD who leaked the Schiano crap before it could happen is a true Tennessee hero

Riddle me this. If Jon Gruden had not been a possibility from the get go then why the hell didn't he and Currie say so. If he was and kept us hanging, he held the paint can while Currie painted himself into a corner. After that, we were not going to be happy with anyone if not JG. I fault them both.

This VFL clamor for Tee would not be happening minus the UT ties. Not an exciting hire at all, they want him here because they would have one of their own in charge and feel comfortable with it. No way he is considered based on his coaching resume at this point. Nothing more than a hire with "potential". Well that potential swings both ways. We need a proven winner at the highest level to resurrect this program.

I bet UT hires him though. Just don't be upset when we get circles coached around us for next few years while Tee is learning on the job.

So it’s just random that he mentioned Knoxville and a rocky top out of the blue on a radio show?

If Currie never considered him in the first place — if you buy the boosters weren’t delivering him on a platter — then Currie should have said something to temper expectations. Might have avoided yesterday’s blowup if he had.

This is starting to sound like going to your 25th reunion and having the prom queen that you never had the nerve to ask out tell you that she had a huge crush on you. (People interested in other genders may mentally substitute pronouns as necessary.)

USC coach Clay Helton on Tee Martin's future as a head coach

Helton is talking him up. It might actually happen. I know a lot of folks won't like this, but I think he brings a stellar staff with him if it does happen. A lot of VFLs would jump at the chance to coach with Tee.

I could live with Tee, certainly.

He's not the tier we were originally looking for, but as a fallback at this point, he's attractive. And a VFL, which will heal a lot of wounds over coming months and years.

And who knows, he might be capable of championships, with some growth in the job.

Yep, wouldn't complain about Tee. Be pretty content.
