Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLIV

My earlier post was pure fiction. My main character was Uncle Freak. I had some follow up ideas in mind regarding uncle Freak, but alas I do not want this growing legs.

My goal was to see how hard it was to make a quasi-believable grumor. Originally I thought you guys would immediately call bs. Maybe you were just being nice to me.

I oddly find myself believing it now, and I am inviting Freak over for Thanksgiving.

No problem.
But curious which you are calling bogus. That the FF guys are saying it and don't really mean it?
Or calling me a liar about them saying it?
FTR, I think your calling their statements bogus but obviously it makes a difference to me.

Lol no not calling you a liar. I just don’t consider 99% of that thread a true representation of how UT fans really feel. I think most want Gruden but most (90%+) would be fine with another big name, home run type hire, whatever that means.

I just don’t like the narrative that our fans are somehow a problem. We DO have some idiot fans, but so does every other passionate fanbase. Ohio State had fans wanting to fire Urban recently lol

I'd hate to wait that long but I'd sacrifice a recruiting class all day if it meant we were getting a quality SEC level coach in here. Doug Mathews seemed to think he would be a good candidate this morning a couple people have said he's expressed interest in the job.

Man Currie would take some heat for waiting that long but if he knew 100% he had him in his back pocket it might be worth it. But they are likely going to the playoffs. Would be late if we could get him.

Yeah, didn’t expect you to be one to troll. Good job

I think he left because he didn’t think Bills mgmt was giving him what he needed to be successful.

Would be a good hire imo but i would hate to wait that long. Not sure why he would leave the NFL.

You are on point. He left because he had an out clause in his contract regarding ownership changing. It did. He opted out. I remember many of the talking heads and NFL types getting miffed about him doing it when he had clearly turned the Bills around. They tried to make him out to be a quitter. He knew what would happen with the change was opposed to the direction the org needed to go. I see him following through and actually quitting a big deal in favor of his character. He is committed to what he believes and means what he says.

Fast forward to today. He went to work for the Jags, steps in successfully as the interim and possibly heading to the playoffs in his first full season. If he sees things wrong with the Jags that will not be addressed by ownership, he will leave. That makes him viable for UT. He wins and he does it his way. If you agree to his terms and don't mess with it - you win. He's got plenty of CFB experience and has recruited a lot. UT would have to hire the guys he says. Sounds sort of like the approach of certain coach in Alabama that is the current GOAT.

Okay, I think we're all agreeing more than we realize.
I love our fan base and I think you are correct with everything you just posted. I think that outside media is using the crazy part of our fan base to sell that as a representation of us all.
Same as the Tweet showing missing fans during the monsoon.

I have some concern over the representation of our fan base, not us wanting a winner. People here are really blowing this out of proportion. The responses aren't matching what he said at all.

It won’t be Gruden, Kelly, Mullen or Peterson. (I’d be very happy to be wrong about any of those.)

People saying they’d be happy if Florida hired Norvell — be careful what you wish for. I called us to hire him because I think he’s going to best (realistic) available.

Yes I think we are on the same page

I am all in on Mullen if we miss on Patterson and Gruden. He makes most sense.
Hank is it too late to get my bumper sticker?

"Mullen it over" (with SEC mascots getting mowed over by Mullen on a tractor)

There is no quieting the Gruden talk. Fans would either refuse to believe or would just move on to the next obsession. If he’s not an option then Currie can move onto his next target without fans watching for it as closely.

Right now nobody knows who his 2nd choice is but if Gruden is removed from the pool then focus shifts there.

Also Currie isn’t operating with the thought of making sure voltwitter and vn is kept satisfied while he’s conducting a search.
