Dan Mullen thread (merged)

The blah blah blah is why you’re wrong. Respect you as a poster but I just don’t get why you can’t put his accomplishments in context and be able to project what he could do here. By the way, he is a target for A&M as well.
ATM hiring Mullen wouldn't surprise me at all. Good fit for ATM and him. Great facilities, resources and recruiting advantages. Imo, his results floor there would be equal to or better than Sumlin's ceiling. ATM fans would probably be more welcoming and patient than Vols fans and his wife probably wouldn't be against it.

Good coach, massive buyout

How would the buyout work?

His buyout isn't too bad, well, its still bad but manageable - $5-10m. Its his salary, unless he wanted to escape for some reason unknown to the general public... UT better have about $100m+ and a 10-year contract ready. The ability to move guys either from a power conference or a lateral move.... is pretty much over, generally. Huge buyouts, huge salaries, etc.

Although its possible, someone has to write some big checks.

That’s the usual comment made in his support, but if he can’t beat Bama in the West- how’s he going to beat them in the East?

He’s has a losing record against both Georgia and South Carolina while at MSU. If he can’t beat them in the West- hows he going to beat them in the East.

He’s even lost to KY....

Tennessee is NOT Mississippi State.

Doesn't matter if he's in the North South East or West.

He'd be Coaching Tennessee.

Butch with Tennessee has lost to all those above teams listed.

By your logic
Saban would make Missisippii State a perennial National Title contender.

So. Would Saban make MSU a National Championship program....like Alabama?

Just sayin...many terrible coaches equal to butch get ahead of Saban on scoreboard

Alabama has trailed in a game at any point just 5 times this season -- only 29 offensive snaps -- in three different games. That's 3.8 percent of the 747 offensive snaps taken.

Who/which “terrible coaches” have had a lead on Saban this season? For how long? And what is their “awful” coaching record?

1. For 2:08 vs Florida St...Jimbo Fisher has won a national title at Fla St and has a career record of 82-23

2. For 0:13 vs Texas A&M.....Kevin Sumlin has a career head coaching record of 86-42

3. For 1:54 vs Miss. St....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

4. For 1:13 vs Miss. St.....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

5.For 12:14 vs Miss. St....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

MSU can celebrate moral victories. I'm tired of them. I remember UT leading quite a few teams that we lost to... Don't forget that Mullen had a losing record last year and lost to South Alabama.

I don't trust Mullen to ever beat Alabama if he can't beat South Alabama in his 8th year.

Dude seriously? This is literally one of the dumbest reasons not to want a coach. What coach is going to come in here and beat Saban? Take Chris Petersen. Widely acknowledged as a great coach right? Guess what? Saban curbstomped his best team he has ever had at Washington that had NFL talent.

Should Mullen be at the top of a Vol fans list? No. But if we whiff on our top targets, he would be a fine option. Is he going to beat Alabama? Probably not, but again, who will?

I could be wrong, but from what I've seen and read I think Tennessee is trying to nail down Mullen while UCLA and Florida fight over Chip Kelly.

If Florida loses the Kelly sweepstakes, Scott Frost and Mullen seem to be their next 2 options. Frost probably leans towards Nebraska over UF. so that leaves Mullen. Do you want to get into a war for him with UF? Probably not.

I hope this is what Currie is doing. I was lukewarm about Mullen at first, but I think now he's one of the better options available. I would rather us go ahead and get him than wait around and miss all of the top targets.

How are you even so sure Mullen wants to leave MSU?

The expectations there suit him better.

I'm hopeful then that Florida can hire Dan Mullen first.

If Mullen is hired it was not a coaching search it was a coaching settle. He's not terrible but we can and should do much better

Who would be your preference? We're not getting Gruden,Kelly, or Frost. Matt Campbell and Fuente have large buyouts. Just curious to see who would be better.

Miles
Schiano
Norvell or Taggart

In that order if you take those named away

Edit I'd prob put Taggart over Norvell

He did great at WKU & South Florida
And he would bring an outstanding staff

there's a lot of irony in this post considering what you think Jon Gruden is going to leave to come here....
:eek:lol:

Comparing apples to oranges.

One of them is currently coaching and the other one is not.

ESPN is also fixing to have instant layoffs so there’s no sure thing Gruden will be making more money on Monday Night Football than he would coaching UT if it’s true that we’ve offered him 10 Million.

Also, Gruden hasn’t denied anything while Mullen has pretty much told his team he’ll be at MSU next year.

Mullen is treated like a king for getting average results so not sure why he’d come to UT where expectations like that would get you fired.
