SFD, I don't think Gruden is a pawn. If anything, I think he probably wants to jump ship and if what concep posted is correct, perhaps the stars aligned properly. He wants out, espn might merge with dish somehow, and Ergen is willing to write that into the agreement. Maybe that is the benefit offered to Ergen as a result of his stalking horse bid. Also, I would assume a VC firm would be present for such a merger. Usually they are quite instrumental.
Maybe beaver's job was to prep the masses and create the fever pitch , or grand smoke and mirrors campaign, to heighten the demand for Gruden so fans wouldn't know he was obtained in a less than traditional means. Not that Gruden isn't willing. I think he wants to be our coach.
Take it one step further though...Gruden is a pawn in the sense that he had to come to UT to make it happen. Maybe Ergen didnt want to pay his salary via MNF m, maybe wanted to have the boosters foot it instead...also There is a possibility they are gunning for the whole NFL package... that would probably take away direcTV access to the gameday package and is an obvious revenue stream, even if NFL ratings are down (down ratings will make contract cheaper to acquire).
