Dan Mullen thread (merged)

Exactly right. Mullen makes about 4.5 right now. If FL paid him between 5 and 6 million that could put Mullen as high as the 4th highest paid coach in the nation. While I am sure FL would give him plenty for assistants they won't give him more than 6..........most likely 5 to 5.5.
The chances are mullen isn't going anywhere for the figures you are talking about. All of Mullen's compensation is not publically available, also the buyout is unknown nor the contract with the boosters. Just with the info publically available, he is getting paid more than Butch and the Mac, and the extension was signed after his losing season and he got a raise. If he wins 8-9 games again....probably another raise.

He doesn't have to win year in and year out....Go have UT call Sexton and he will explain how all this works to them. They better bring the check book, Mullen has a sweet setup. Top 10-15 in pay with almost no pressure....and he gets raises after losing years and has only one winning year in the SEC.

I have not seen his extension...only a summary of the extension...he is set to make at least $4.5m plus incentives, but just like his original contract...I assume he will be at or near $5 million just in salary by the end of the contract.

He can end up at Florida, but they better have the checkbook ready -why in the world would he leave MS for $500,000, they're onto their 4th coach since he took the job at MS?

Just curious what are your coaching thoughts on petrino and venerables

I'm hearing (directed at Florida fans by Florida people in the know), to not get cozy with the idea of Dan Mullen at Florida. There is definitely some sort of hangover affect from his time in Gainesville. He's known to have a quirky personality and doesn't always play well with others, colleagues and so forth. The rub is, that's a big part of why Mac didn't fit well and was let go. Blowing off Athletic Department staff meetings, calling receptionists and office workers by nicknames (not always flattering) and generally being disagreeable. They won't go from that to Mullen.

I'll add this though, if Mullen has this dislike for Florida, bad blood or whatever, it would sure add to the UF-UT rivalry if he were to take the UT job. And I'll admit, I'd see Mullen at UT as a major upgrade to their last three coaches and a guy who would make some noise at UT.

His wife also wasn’t fond of living in Gainesville. Basically calling y’all psychos if y’all didn’t win by a big enough score.

Petrino history kind of speaks for itself, is he a horrible coach - probably not. Brent Venables could be interesting name, I mean it would be nice to have someone with 2-4 years as a head coach. I can't say I know a ton about him. I think something like that is what some of the teams which are looking at head coaches.

I keep going back to what LSU was/is doing - which is coaches which would be taking a step up from their current position and have 3-5 years of experience as head coach. Now the problem with that in today's football versus of 1999 and 2005 when Lil Nicky and Les were hired - there really is no stepup for most of the coaches. All these guys have huge salaries.

Mike Gundy is making basically close to what Les was making at LSU - now in today's world it would have been nearly impossible to get Les from Oklahoma State. There is no or limited minor leagues for head coaches in football now.

I think, if a school can't get the guy they want than maybe a 2 or 3 prong approach is something to consider - I am not saying what LSU did is going to work but the alternatives did really exist which is also going to be the case for 4-5 teams in the SEC looking for new head coaches.

Pay Pelini to at least be the defensive coordinator and associate head coach, Scott Frost or similar (as head coach/offensive coordinator).... also, you could maybe get someone like Les (or similar) as associate head coach and head recruiter. The plan is to have Frost or similar take over completely and if that doesn't work, and Pelini is doing well with the defense, you keep him and get rid of Frost down the line.

LSU approach was this (whether it will work is still unknown):
1. Jimbo was the primary target
2. Herman was a secondary but only at the very right price, and it was a huge gamble as he has limited experience... once Herman got Texas into the mix... LSU left the table.
3. Fall back option of 3 prong - payup for Aranda, pay down for Orgeron, and payup for an offensive coordinator - dump bad assistant coaches, keep the good ones
4. There was other coaches that were kind of looked at but there really wasn't anything appealing - Fedora was discussed.

There just isn't many options unless one was going to mortgage Tiger Stadium.

I think many of the SEC teams might have to take a similar approach.

I definitely would consider Pelini as a defensive coordinator, I am just not sure I think he can handle the fans as HC, if things go south for a bit - he isn't as bad as Muschamp but he does have history.

Every volnation thread has “Hire Mullen”posts so I thought it would be interesting to take an objective look at Mullen:

Mullen is 6-21 against top 25 teams. He’s never beaten Bama and never won the sec West. In fact, in 8 seasons at MSU, he’s only finished greater than 2nd in the SEC West one time, every other season has been 4th or worse... in 8 seasons he’s only had above .500 record in SEC play 1 time.

His best season and only season to achieve 10 wins was 2013 when they went 10-3 and lost in the Orange Bowl. That was in year, wait for it..... 6 at MSU

Year 1 record - 5-7 (3-5 SEC)
Year 2 - 9-4 (4-4 SEC)
Year 3- 7-6 (2-6 SEC)
Year 4- 8-5 (4-4 SEC)
Year 5- 7-6 (3-5 SEC)
Year 6- 10-3 (6-2 SEC)
Year 7 - 9-4 (4-4 SEC)
Year 8 - 6-7 (3-5 SEC)

An objective look at his numbers suggests Mullen and Butch are cut from the same cloth. Average 8-4 consistent coaches.[/
WHAT ABOUT THE OPEN FLA JOB? HE WILL GO THERE FIRST IF ASKED.

This is still a one-possession game right? MSU just had to stop UMASS on 4th and 1 to prevent a UMASS score.

I see people are starting back with the "Mullen would be great" talk .. so feel like this thread needs bumped, with an emphatic

NO.

Hiring the second best coach in the SEC who is currently having success at the worst program in one of the toughest divisions in football would definitely call for a NO.
LOL at you people.

I doubt he leave Starkville. Getting paid $4M to go 8-4. Ole Miss is down. He's got it made.

Agree

Why leave and have to be more competitive on every game and risk getting fired for consistent 8-4.

Mullen makes 4.5 million in guaranteed money and up to 4.8 million. What would he make a at Tennessee 5? Prob no more than 5.2. Tennessee would not make him more than the 5th highest paid coach...... So why leave for less than 1/2 million.
