Just curious what are your coaching thoughts on petrino and venerables
Petrino history kind of speaks for itself, is he a horrible coach - probably not. Brent Venables could be interesting name, I mean it would be nice to have someone with 2-4 years as a head coach. I can't say I know a ton about him. I think something like that is what some of the teams which are looking at head coaches.
I keep going back to what LSU was/is doing - which is coaches which would be taking a step up from their current position and have 3-5 years of experience as head coach. Now the problem with that in today's football versus of 1999 and 2005 when Lil Nicky and Les were hired - there really is no stepup for most of the coaches. All these guys have huge salaries.
Mike Gundy is making basically close to what Les was making at LSU - now in today's world it would have been nearly impossible to get Les from Oklahoma State. There is no or limited minor leagues for head coaches in football now.
I think, if a school can't get the guy they want than maybe a 2 or 3 prong approach is something to consider - I am not saying what LSU did is going to work but the alternatives did really exist which is also going to be the case for 4-5 teams in the SEC looking for new head coaches.
Pay Pelini to at least be the defensive coordinator and associate head coach, Scott Frost or similar (as head coach/offensive coordinator).... also, you could maybe get someone like Les (or similar) as associate head coach and head recruiter. The plan is to have Frost or similar take over completely and if that doesn't work, and Pelini is doing well with the defense, you keep him and get rid of Frost down the line.
LSU approach was this (whether it will work is still unknown):
1. Jimbo was the primary target
2. Herman was a secondary but only at the very right price, and it was a huge gamble as he has limited experience... once Herman got Texas into the mix... LSU left the table.
3. Fall back option of 3 prong - payup for Aranda, pay down for Orgeron, and payup for an offensive coordinator - dump bad assistant coaches, keep the good ones
4. There was other coaches that were kind of looked at but there really wasn't anything appealing - Fedora was discussed.
There just isn't many options unless one was going to mortgage Tiger Stadium.
I think many of the SEC teams might have to take a similar approach.
I definitely would consider Pelini as a defensive coordinator, I am just not sure I think he can handle the fans as HC, if things go south for a bit - he isn't as bad as Muschamp but he does have history.
