We are at risk of missing a bowl though. Look at what we have left:

UK: ?
Southern Miss: should win
Missouri: ?
LSU: loss, IMO
Vandy: ?

Sure we can make a bowl but it’s definitely an uphill climb. I don’t think we can win 2/3 of those question makes games.

It could be a perception thing as well. Some candidates may have expressed cold feet in regards to job security. If the UT admin waits until it's mathematically impossible to avoid taking a step back (i.e. 5 losses), it could be making a statement to allay those concerns. It's hard to tell what has been said behind closed doors and in back-channel communications.

I don't want any candidate who is afraid of taking a job where his predecessor got 5 years to win a weak division and never broke 8 wins in a regular season.

That's a ridiculously long leash for a program like Tennessee.

Does it really matter whether or not he has someone on the hook already? It's inevitable that we're going to be looking for another head coach either way.

I agree. If it was me, he’d have been fired already.

But I can understand some of the arguments for not pulling the trigger quite yet also. I don’t like them and having Butch as our HC still frustrates the hell out of me. But there are still some reasons for it at this point.

I’m personally in the fire him now camp. I think it would be not only important for the new coach to evaluate his new team and the young players to get the extra practice, but it would be a good way to send out any seniors who are dealing with a miserable end to their UT careers. I’d say 99% of coaches that are worth any salt realize that Butch just isn’t a good coach and UT was right in firing him, so I don’t believe the perception issue. I think the only reason Butch is still here is because of the buyout money. JMO.

He beats TCU and his name skyrockets. Heck of a coach. Pats organization tried to get him before became Toledo HC. He was Urbans top OC target at Ohio st before Herman but he turned it down.

I don't know his Recruiting background and connections though. He may be in the right spot for himself already. Only SEC school I could see him being a fit at is KY with him being in the OH area for so long at Toldeo.

Frost should be out #1 of that tier. He is building connections in Florida to fit his offense.

Just don't think Campbell has proven near enough to get this job. He's 8-11 at Iowa State I think. Idc what kind of legendary coaches tried or wanted to hire him, he still hasn't done enough. He needs to be way, way down the list.

For those that love Frost:

Matt Campbell took over Iowa State after 3-9, 2-10, and 3-9 seasons. In year 2 they are 5-2 already with a win over #3 Oklahoma and TCU up next week. Is his resume not more impressive at this time than Frost including his 35-15 record at Toledo?

Nope

Hire Frost, keep Shoop, and work together to fix our 3rd down defense. The O will be fine under Frost. Cutcliffe and/or Cheney like...

He wouldn't keep Shoop. He would bring Chinander with him unless Chinander got HC job to replace him.

Yup. I read that he came over to UCF with Frost from Oregon. What’s your opinion on him? I’d be worried about a situation like Butch where he wants to bring his staff.

Scott Frost stat for you..... Mariota and Vernon Adams finished #1 in country in 2014 and 2015 for QB passing efficiency. Milton his current QB is #2 in country.

Yep I think his system is QB friendly

He's head and shoulders above Campbell IMO. In two years he takes a UCF program from 0-12 to basically beating teams into submission just about every week. He's been on the big stage at Nebraska, Oregon and he's played in the NFL. So many things to like about Frost.

Too long. If that even comes close to giving a potential coach caution I don't want him.

The one and only reason I could see why they haven't pulled the trigger yet, is they're just trying to sweat him out in order to lower the buyout.

I agree. I think the perception out there among coaches about Jones is he's just simply a bad football coach at this level. I could see a lot of them thinking he's a joke.

The small amount of optimism I had that the AD would get this right and hire someone decent has been crushed in the past few hours. I wish we'd get this over with. I have fall weddings to start planning and new hobbies to decide on.

1. Prorated buyout means (I think) the buyout sum goes down a bit each week. (Could be wrong here though, please correct me if so).

2. Some talk that the assistants have such an adversarial relationship that firing Butch might actually result in a more toxic environment for the team (admittedly, speculation).

3. Possibility that not firing Butch leads to him negotiating a lower buyout to save his reputation as a HC.

4. Giving Butch a fair shot at (somewhat) salvaging the season is something other coaches might look at favorably in regards to job security with Currie.

5. If the coaches you’re targeting are currently employed, you’re not gonna get them on the recruiting trail until their season ends. No use making a change in October unless you truly believe an interim can lead to noticeably different results.

6. Going to an interim too early opens the possibility of them gaining money with fans, players, and/or recruits to become the next HC. If you don’t see anybody on the staff as a possibility for our next HC, that’s a scary prospect.
