Coaches We Have Contacted

But you know that isn't the way it works. A surrogate is doing whatever search is happening now. There is no direct contact between a coach and the program. There is only contact between this surrogate and the agent of possible targets with the objective of determining mutual interests. Everyone maintains "plausible deniability". No coach wants it said that he was considered and turned down... bad for his next contract negotiation. The program has the opposite concern plus the extended impact on team image and recruiting.

This seems to be pretty much what happens until a deal is basically struck. Is there any public proof that UT offered someone before Jones? Many acknowledge he wasn't a top choice. The others broke down before any direct contact between the AD and coach, right?

Strong agreed to take the job in a face to face with Hart. Was due in Knoxville the next morning but changed his mind overnight. That is when Hart went to Jones.

Before Strong, Gundy was talking to Hart about job but he was just looking for more jack from Oklahoma state. I do believe Hart was set to make him the coach before going to Strong.

There is so much information/misinformation flying around out there, that this thread struck a chord with me. This list of names came just minutes after my boss (who has an account on VolQuest) sends me a LONG email from a poster over there claiming to have inside information (don't they all) about Currie's obsession with Gruden. I read the whole email, and then responded with, "Hold on, let me share what I've read".

And then I put together an email with information only from this thread. The list of names, LWS sharing what he has heard concerning Currie and his desire to hold on to Butch, and the support from some for the names on this list. I told him that this list of candidates is the first list I've read that really screams "Vols' Crappy Hire". This list smells like the truth. When I read this group of names, I got depressed, because I can totally see us hiring one of these guys...and the subtle, yet undeniable and quick support from some, raises the conspiracy hackles on my neck. It makes me think that they are floating these names out there, and having some folks show some support, calling them the "Smart hires", so that over the next couple of weeks, we will eventually say, "Well, let's give them a chance". I could totally be wrong, but knowing how things have gone in the past, this list seems real to me.

Now that being said, the information my boss shared with me, is really close to some things that 'Boro is hinting at with some information he is sitting on. The tl;dr of what he sent me is real estate deal (it's always a real estate deal!) involving the Andersons, Gruden, and maybe even Peyton. So as I said to start with, there's so much smoke in every direction, that there has to be fire somewhere, LOL.

this is how things get confused in this social media world.

the guy posting on VolQuest was posting various things he had seen posted in the last week or so. Just summarizing what he had seen or heard... don't think he was presenting information that was validated.

that's how i remember it. in fact, i think Strong was in Knoxville (iirc) meeting with Hart, flew back to L'ville to get his stuff together, sat down with the l'ville AD that night, and called hart the next morning to say he changed his mind and was staying put. i don't know how close Gundy ever came, i always thought that was just a money grab on his part.

overtures were made to a few others, but that seemed more of a gauging interest vs getting to the point of an offer being made.

It's all smoke boys, throwing out some unknown names to work us into a frenzy and cover for the impending Gruden hire!

Hart went to Louisville and he returned to Knoxville to wait on Strong.. I know the person that took him up there

that's it. i just knew Strong was back in Louisville the night before it was supposed to be announced. i remember now the running line was "hart should have taken Strong with him back to Knoxville".......

you think Strong could be a candidate this time around?

I doubt it... paid pretty well where he is and in first year.. Just doubt he would have interest. Just got booted from a high pressure situation and likely wouldn't care to step into another...

We are going to find out, most likely, we are going to be turned down again by primary targets on the front end..

agree.

Wow the first guy on the list has a 9 and 9 coaching record and 0 and 1 in Bowl games.

Jason Cadle is a MAC coach 15 and 5.

Neal Brown is 18 and 13 in the Sun Belt

Jedd Fisch is the OC for UCLA

We could almost hire all these guys for what were paying Butch. I don't think a one of them makes a million a season right now.

Your talking about a total head coaching record among them that is 42 and 27 in second tier conferences.

After saying all this could be true as this seems to be the way we always go and if we do it again I hope fans totally revolt. These names should not be on a Tennessee coaching list.

If you've ever been through major downsizings/reorganizations/restructurings, then you've seen all this before. Rumor after rumor - some actual speculation and some (like this) just stirring up the fragile, but in the end 99% are complete fantasy, and most of the remaining 1% are just wrong.

However there are the blind squirrels and the lottery winners, so rumor mongers have followers - fatalist attraction kind of thing.

Yep then you think we did hire Dooley and the guy in charge now was part of that search.

All four probably have the same agent and this is his way of getting their names on the record as "officially" being considered by UT.
The media will run with it........

Maybe we aren't going to pay the big bucks and are going to nickel and dime it. I mean Bamas not making any money by hiring a big name like Saban, he's almost broke their football program with his huge salary.

I would agree but seems like a common consensus that this time, UT plans to spend money on a coach.

by the fans, yeah, i think most think we should. i don't know that there's anything legit that says the folks that would actually write that check are going to do that.

until proven otherwise, i'd lean toward anyone's list of 2nd tier guys.

I can guarantee butch will not be back next year. He was looking for a way out this offseason and Currie not giving him an extension speaks volume to this whole situation. Not only did butch speak with lawyers to netioate a lower buyout but he's more than likely hinted to his family he doesn't wanna be here much longer and I know that's heresay but look at his demeanor on the sideline, he's a beaten man and has no interest being here anymore. So with all these BS narratives that Butch will be hers next year can flushed down the drain along with his cliches. I'm not trying to bash anyone but there is no logical reason or explanation to a reason why he would be coach next year.

Currie has started the process. He's gathering intel on coaches now. I asked my neighbor whose firm will be one of the advisers Currie engages if he thinks Butch will be retained for another year. He says it's possible, but he seriously doubt it. He doesn't have any inside info on why they haven’t fired Butch yet. His gut feeling is Currie wants to get all affairs in order before he jumps the gun because it's going to cost UT a bunch of money and needs to make sure the big dollar donors back the plan.

money will not be a problem. they will not over pay anyone but money will not prevent from hiring any coach that wants to come here.
Honestly I don't think you there is a way we can overpay, we need to spend the cash to get the big name Larry. Look at the massive amounts of money coaches like Saban and Meyer create for Bama and OSU. Kelly is a no brainer with Hefrich. We need to get it done yesterday. Kelly wasn't an NFL coach, but he's an fantastic collegiate coach. He would build a winner quick and Vols fans are so starved that the revenue would sky rocket.
