Recruiting Discussion

Dowouna just committed to Purdue, he was going to get the delay treatment from staff anyways but obviously now makes Petrusev that much more important.

Couple notes from VQ...

Petrusev slated to visit next weekend and at this time Tennessee is the only official visit he has planned. However Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky have all offered and are starting to get involved. Apparently there is a connection with Des Oliver dating back to when he signed Serbian Drazen Zlovaric when he was an assistant at Georgia, Zlovaric has been a manager on Rick Barnes staff now for a couple of years also.

Two highly regarded 2019 recruits are expected in this weekend for an unofficial visit, 4* Marcus Watson who has already been to campus once and 4* Kira Lewis.

When is the fall signing window? With only one open scholarship I wonder if the staff can convince a highly rated recruit to jump on the opportunity. Unfortunately the one thing that might work against TN more than anything is that an NCAAT invitation isn't automatic.

I wouldn't want two commits in the fall. That could create discontent as somebody would have to leave. Hopefully instead the entire roster pulls together and want to be the group that gets Tennessee Basketball back to the top of the conference and an NCAAT regular invitee.

They'll only sign 1 in the fall and then continue to evaluate guys into the spring in case of attrition.

Yes. But they could sign somebody in the fall and make an offer to another. I hope they don't offer anybody while the roster is at capacity. It would be stupid and disruptive.

I don't think that'll happen, you can evaluate guys and extend them offers without it being known publicly...this staff is good at keeping things quiet.

Especially when Basilio pretends to be listening.

I really expect that since there's only a single open scholarship right now, it will go to a highly ranked recruit. They don't need to sign somebody just to fill up the roster. They can take a really good player and it seems like it would be a very attractive situation for a really good player (minus a guarantee of making the NCAAT field). Or they can save it and use 4 in 2019.

One of the emerging names of the fall evaluation period is Filip Petrusev. A 6-foot-11 power forward by way of Serbia, Petrusev will play out his final year of high school ball at the famed Montverde Academy program this winter as a number of colleges have begun to pursue.

Formerly committed to Hartford, Petrusev backed off of his pledge to the American East program in July and ever since, has seen his stock skyrocket. A member of Serbian under-18 team this summer, Petrusev comes in your skilled-and-versatile mold as he can shoot the perimeter jumper, score in the post and also rebound the ball within traffic.

After transferring to Montverde last month, college interest has not been in short supply.

“The last couple of weeks since my recruitment opened, it has been kind of crazy,” Petrusev said. “A lot of schools have come through, between 20 to 25 schools. Arizona, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Charlotte, Stanford, Maryland and a lot of others have been talking to me. I just need to get more information on those schools and cut my list, take my visits and then make my decision.”

Petrusev spoke on three schools in the mix for a visit.

Tennessee: “It has been great from their side. Coach (Rick) Barnes being there with his tradition with big guys is good. It is a great opportunity and it is also a nice place. It is the SEC and a Power Five program. I am definitely going to take a look at them.”

Vanderbilt: “They started recruiting me recently. They are a nice school in the SEC with a good tradition. They are losing most of their team next year so they would have a lot of opportunities there.”

Arizona: “They were here last week. Coach (Mark) Phelps and coach (Sean) Miller, we really went through a lot of stuff and information. I am probably going to take a visit there sooner or later. Having Dusan Ristic there means a lot. He says it is one of the top five schools in the country and a wonderful place. It is a basketball town and a basketball school; it is all about basketball there and it is just a great spot.”

WHAT'S NEXT

Petrusev will finish out his senior year at Montverde Academy this winter.

This weekend, he will head to Tennessee on Friday and will then take another official visit to Vanderbilt beginning on Sunday.

“I will try and get to those two since I have four visits left," he said. "I want to visit as many schools as possible and then maybe visit Arizona on the West Coast, along with UCLA or Colorado.”

RIVALS' REACTION

Having already taken an official visit to Charlotte this summer, Petrusev will likely use his remaining official visits over the next several weeks before coming to a decision. Tennessee has invested a good amount of time and energy with the Serbian forward, as has Arizona. Expect for many others to jump into the mix and attempt to line up their own official visits as a number of name-brand programs have become highly intrigued this fall.

Thanks bTNo, this is the kid I want to get with our only scholarship this year. Like most of the eastern European kids, very good shooter, but seems to be be a strong rebounder and has a nice inside game. I could see him coming in and immediately get 20 minutes game at UT

Adding him to a roster on paper that only loses Daniel and it definitely creates some excitement. I've seen various reports but sounds like he's at least 6'11" and quite possibly 7', would be a great get for Barnes and staff.

According to VQ Petrusev's parents are coming over from Serbia for the weekend to join him on his official visit to Tennessee and Vanderbilt. While he has OV's to Arizona and UCLA tentatively scheduled he's 1. Not likely to take them and 2. Even if he does the parents likely aren't returning so you'd have to think Tennessee and Vanderbilt would still be considered the front runners.

Coaches will host another 2019 unofficial visitor, Kyle Sturdivant. So for those keeping track, over last few weeks unofficial 2019 visitors: #63 DJ Burns, #81 Kira Lewis, #107 Marcus Watson, #159 Kyle Sturdivant and NR Jason Jitoboh

Tennessee and Vanderbilt seem to be in the best shape

Not to mention Arizona is mixed up in the FBI probe. I don't think any recruits would be wise to go to any of Miami, USC, Auburn, Louisville, South Carolina, Arizona, or Oklahoma State, especially in the 2018 or 2019 classes.

Here is a blurb about ZONA from SB Nation

"Arizona assistant Emanuel Richardson: Richardson allegedly accepted bribes from “runner” Christian Dawkins and financial adviser Muhish Sood for steering Arizona players to work with them as professionals. Dawkins, then an agent, was also seen at Arizona practices, which is an NCAA violation in itself. Richardson has been an assistant under Sean Miller since his Xavier days in 2007, coming over to Arizona in 2009. He has been arrested on fraud and corruption charges. Arizona suspended Richardson and relieved him of all duties."

Starting to get excited about our chances with Petrusev. Vandy scares me a little in the sense that they may land Garland, and seem to be trending up in general. Plus, with foreign kids, the pursuit of what they feel is high-level education is a concern.

Outside of that, we are right in the thick of it.

Yup, would be nice for him to shut things down after his OV to Tennessee and not bother with Vandy but parents may want to see more than one school. Tennessee has been in this recruitment much longer than Vanderbilt and is one of the only schools to travel across the pond to see him, their effort definitely can't be questioned on this one.
