I like Mullen...I'm picking his team to beat the Ugly Dawgs this weekend...
Still doesn't mean he would give Tennessee a second look...let Jim McElwain continue his mediocrity and Mullen could be back in the SEC east...but as a Gator...
And yes you can qualify it. A competent coaching staff wins against OU, Florida, and Arkansas in 2015. A competent coaching staff wins at USC and Vandy in 2016. A competent coach wins at Florida in 2017.
Mullen has horrible recruiting (because of Miss State) yet he develops and churns out players left and right.
We have a coach that has decent recruiting but can't coach one game without some sort of blunder.
I take the guy who does more with less than the guy who squanders talent left and right.
Yeah, absolutely.
Someone said in one of the threads, a few weeks ago, "yeah, but without Neyland and Majors and Fulmer, we're just an X-win program."
Okay...but then you have to assess Bama without Bryant or Saban ... you have to assess Florida without Spurrier or Meyer ... and all the way across the college football landscape. No Schembechler, or Hayes, or Osborne, or Bowden.
And what would we find? That every program, without their great coaches, is Illinois.
Well, duh.
Hehe.![]()
So, you can predict wins in hindsight.
Bravo. Well done, sir! You should get your own show on ESPN!
I'm calling BS. Straight up, you cannot say with 100% certainty those games would have been won or lost with another coach.
And you just carry on thinking Miss State can't get good recruits because of, well, Miss State and Starkville.
Bull. ****.
How is it Auburn manages to pull in talent being in scenic downtown Auburn, Alabama and Opelika? Or Penn State gets their highly ranked classes in scenic coal country Pennsylvania? And are you insinuating Eugene, Oregon is some cosmopolitan haven of the highest caliber?
He. Does. Not. Recruit. Well.
ESPN couldn't afford me. Also, I wouldn't want to be associated with them at the moment.
Once again, its easier to recruit to Knoxville over Starkville. Even Dooley recruited better. And he was a total kluttz. Tennessee sells itself.
In what world can Dooley recruit better than Miss State, its called Tennessee's resources and appeal.
Even history agrees with me on that.
Cool.
I see a comment and I totally agree with it. Then someone responds to that poster that they are stupid. I'm like "damn, I guess that makes me stupid too". So, I guess if you agree with me and someone calls me stupid, that would also make you stupid, and if I'm gonna be in a group that is considered stupid, I'm glad to be in the same one as you.![]()
Third, he has a 70% win percentage vs the SEC East. We don't have that now.
Fourth, he has a winning SEC record since 2013. We don't have that now.
.
A bit deeper record comparison over last 4 years.
Mullen vs East 6-2, West 10-14
Butch vs West 0-8, East 14-10
Mullen vs East teams played
2013 1-1 Butch against same teams 2-0, Ky, SC
2014 2-0 Butch against same teams 2-0, Ky, Vandy
2015 2-0 Butch against same teams 2-0, Ky, Mo
2016 1-1 Butch against same teams 1-1, Ky, SC
Record 6-2 vs 7-1
Mullen vs the 8 West teams that TN faced and the result during that year:
Ala 0-4, A&M Won, Ark Won, Ole Miss Lost, Aub Lost
Result, really not difference in the coaches based on records against common foes.
ESPN couldn't afford me. Also, I wouldn't want to be associated with them at the moment.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were Dan Mullen's agent. Let's start with this big 70% SEC East winning percentage. Out of 19 SEC games, 8 of them have been against KenSucky. 8 out of 19. Throw in two wins vs. Vandy and a Dooley led Tennessee team and there is no wonder he is at 70%.
I also love the fact that you want to cherrypick 2013 as to when we look at a winning record in the SEC. Let's cherry pick his 10 win season where he finished second in the SEC West (which, by the way, is the ONLY time that he hasn't been fourth or fifth in 8 years)
Dan's 10 win season included wins against a 3-9 powerhouse Southern Miss, a 6-6 UAB team, 6-7 South Alabama, 5-7 KenSucky, 6-6 UT Martin, and a 3-9 Vandy team. 6 out of 10 wins were .500 or below. Then add on a 7-6 Arkansas team, and three 8-5 teams (LSU, A&M, and Auburn). The losses were to a 12-2 Bama team, 9-4 Ole Miss, and to Georgia Tech in a bowl game.
And since we like to cherry pick around here, let's cherry pick some of his big wins in Starkville. Out of his career 64 wins, 39 have come at the expense of : Jackson State, MTSU, UK, Vandy, Memphis, Alcorn St., Houston, UAB, La. Tech, Tn Martin, Wake Forest, Southern Miss., Northwestern State, Troy, UMass, Samford, Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green, Rice, and Charleston Southern. 39 of his 64 wins. Right there.
Is he a decent coach? I'll give him that. But if Currie hired Mullen to replace Jones, he should be run out of town with Butch. 5 5th place finishes. 2 4th place finishes. 7 out of 8 seasons he has been 4th or worse. Those are the facts and they are undisputed.
And you do realize you are stating Dooley recruited better than Mullen, right?
Yes. Just shows how much Tennessee sells itself since we had a coach that did everything possible to burn every recruiting bridge possible and ZERO coaching competence.
Amazing what can happen when you have a program that can sell itself.
JMSqb, I just want you to know that, even though I'm not the guy arguing with you right now, I'm still keeping an eye on your contributions and grinning at the logical fallacies.
Didn't want you to think I'd forgotten about you.![]()
It's even more amazing when you have a coach that can sell a program.
A 5-7 Butch got a top 10 recruiting class. A 10-3 Mullen barely cracked the top 30.
That only happened because Butch had a full 5 more weeks (Bowl Season) than Mullen to be out on the road recruiting....
Butch was able to sell playing time right away and had legacy recruits.
The reason MSU constantly recruits in the mid 20's to mid 30's is because they have tons of upperclassmen every year because Mullen develops players year after year. If you can play right away vs wait to see a start for two years, where are you going? Knoxville to play right away easily.....
And once again, tell me why Mississippi State is as easy to recruit to as Knoxville?
I want to hear your legitimate reasons.
