Where there's smoke there's fire?

He has coached under Snyder, Stoops, and now Dabo. Gruden or Kelly, those are the only guys that we could pony up for and it's be considered a big-time hire. What other proven coach is out there?

Petrino, Kelly, see if Bob Stoops is tired of being retired yet, Dan Mullen, PJ Fleck

In fear of being exiled, let Fulmer coach?

He is waaay past his prime. But think about and it makes sense
I am NOT a fan of having him back
But look at it as get the excuse maker out and let fulmer be interim to finish season.
Makes best of a train wreck situation and obviously puts tn in position to be front runner on any available splash hire.

Could work

Butch has moved from #17 to #14 on coaches hot seat. Good read with a leeway into Chip Kelly as top candidate.

If Butch needs 9 wins...with Alabama still on the schedule...that leaves him with one more mulligan. I do not see him going 5-1 against UGa, SC, Mizzou, Vandy, Ky and LSU. He will be lucky to split and finish the season at 7-5.

I personally think he might survive even at 7-5 just because of the money issue. 8-4 almost certainly safe. 9-3 or above is a lock.

Ive been saying let fulmer come in on an interim basis, see how things go..good luck with any of the other big name coaches at this point in the season

If TN fans think Butch's gimmicks and cliches are bad wait til they get a load of Fleck.

If he can win, he can wear a trash can for a hat for all I care. But I put him last on my list for a reason. I would call those other guys first. Honestly, there's no reason why we couldn't get Petrino.

Well, most probably you have a buyout of the other coach you want to hire. :) You are typically looking at a $12-20m deal now a days, much much more than that for one of the top ones. The assumption is there is an offset, but most probably they are getting a job for much less money... probably have to take an assistant coach job as well, which what pays 1/20th of the contract.

Mullen's name keeps coming up but his record is not good even against lesser opponents, he did whip LSU the other night. He is currently making $4.5m, I don't think the details are known for coming years but its possible his salary goes up every year. Why would he take a job at UT when he can probably make $4.5-5.5m at MSU and he doesn't have to win? Haha.

Mullen is going to cost you dearly because he really doesn't need the job, I wouldn't look at it for less than $7m, than you have to question paying that type of money when his record is so bad.

You guys are staring to figure out what LSU figured out last year. The top guys don't get you even at the table without $100m+... that just gets you to the table... most probably you are looking at $150m over 10 years if not more.

You've been preaching this but you're 100% wrong. No coach gets a 10yr guaranteed deal much less more, maybe Bill Belicheck gets 10yrs, the best coach ever. Harbough only got 7 and he's a Michigan man and as guaranteed a winner as one can get. More so than Gruden would be.

Also, let's say we pay $15M/annually for a HC and his staff, we're paying $8M right now so the difference over say 7yrs is only $49M more than what we've already committed to spending, not $150M. So stop using the figures incorrectly in attempt to drive your own agenda.

No, you would be much better off letting Scott serve as the interim HC while retaining his OC duties.

Peyton or Currie needs to make a call to JG and Byrd... tell them we'll get you a coach who can put you in position to succeed.

well, there are some pretty good coaches available...so, getting a good coach won't be a problem, but kids leaving definitely will be and can we keep a Top 5-6 incoming class...stay tuned to the intriguing drama as the VN stomach turns...:)

GO VOLS!

1. Bob Stoops
2. Dan Mullen
3. Justin Fuente
4. Tee Martin
5. Brent Venables
6. Mike Norvell

Are there other names? Sure. But these are realistic candidates who would be available and maybe willing to come to Knoxville. Stoops is a reach I know but he is currently not coaching anywhere and has SEC ties. Our luck though McElwain is canned and Bob heads back to Gainesville.

No to Chip Kelly or Petrino. Stoops is a pipe dream, pretty sure he hates the SEC. I'd drop boat loads on Mullen or Venables.

Lol, can Jim Tressel still coach??

I'll probably get a lot of flack for this... but let's go get Kiffin... Bobby Petrino got a second chance at Louisville and it seems to be working out well.... He is great on offense... He has said many times he regrets leaving Tennessee... and I forgive him for leaving for his dream job

Regardless of reality, this is order of calls/feelers Currie should make.

1. Gruden (always the 1st call)
2. Stoops
2. Venables
3. Kelly
4. Norvell
5. We suck again

Kiffin's record is worse than Butch's. For crying out loud, people, Kiffin is a proven mediocre head coach.

I agree Gruden gets a sniff. Hopefully he doesn't lead the administration on too long this time.

This. Everyone seems to forget the second part of the firing process. The replacement. Other than Chip Kelly (Mullen isn't leaving), I can't think of any other splash hire right now. No to Les Miles. No no no
