Well, most probably you have a buyout of the other coach you want to hire. You are typically looking at a $12-20m deal now a days, much much more than that for one of the top ones. The assumption is there is an offset, but most probably they are getting a job for much less money... probably have to take an assistant coach job as well, which what pays 1/20th of the contract.
You guys are staring to figure out what LSU figured out last year. The top guys don't get you even at the table without $100m+... that just gets you to the table... most probably you are looking at $150m over 10 years if not more.
And so begins another endless stream of "fire Butch" and "who can we get to replace him" threads. It was a lame performance by our coordinators and coach, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that we can snap our fingers and do better. All one has to do is look at texas, georgia, notre dame, florida, others--and alabama before saban--to see that getting a top coach is hard. Coaches depend on their coordinators, and our coordinators were the problem in this game. At key moments, they and their units wet the bed.
Times have indeed changed. There are no longer just 10-15 marquee jobs anymore. Schools like TCU and MSU are paying 5 million per year.
UT is so far behind not only in head coach salary, but also assistants, that it shouldn't be hard to see why we can't compete at the highest level. You want to know why we have Larry Scott for an OC. It is because Butch didn't have 1+ million to spend on that position.
Money talks. And right now UT's bullsh!t walks. We are way behind the times.
I posted this elsewhere, but it is relevant here:
Butch's buyout = 7.5 million
New Coach first year = Around 4-5 million or more
New Coach's buyout = Around 0-1 million or more
So, a coaching change is around a 12-15 million outlay. That isn't chump change.
Shoop was thought to be the answer--and is getting something like $1 M, isn't he? Our assistants are not exactly starving. Jones hired Scott to keep him happy and recruiting in florida, more than anything, IMO--and you can't hire a coordinator for those reasons. The coordinators have to be great coaches, first and foremost--and if necessary you let the other assistants carry the recruiting load.
Obviously these are estimates but the immediate cost would not be as substantial as some on here are claiming but the $7M tab has to be picked up. Considering our pathetic leadership and primary boosters got us all in this mess I'd have no problem putting my hand out if I was Currie, "fork it over so I can fix this mess that you created by hiring Dooley."
Mutual decision to part ways. Butch will not get an extension or raise this year. When it didn't happen then he hired Jimmy Sexton. Sexton job is to work behind the scene s and get Butch another job next year. Butch is leaving this year. He cannot handle the pressure
