Where there's smoke there's fire?

UT is in a much better position to make a more solid hire this time around. The roster is much better and so is UT's financial situation. That doesn't mean they won't find a way to screw it up

Well, most probably you have a buyout of the other coach you want to hire. :) You are typically looking at a $12-20m deal now a days, much much more than that for one of the top ones. The assumption is there is an offset, but most probably they are getting a job for much less money... probably have to take an assistant coach job as well, which what pays 1/20th of the contract.

Chip Kelly doesn't have a buyout :)

If we want shot a coaches like Mullen they you stsrt it now.im not sold I mcelwain making it either. Then you have atm.mixzou...etc....arky....will be alot of people fight off

This is my thought, too. Much better to be proactive rather than reactive.

Mutual decision to part ways. Butch will not get an extension or raise this year. When it didn't happen then he hired Jimmy Sexton. Sexton job is to work behind the scene s and get Butch another job next year. Butch is leaving this year. He cannot handle the pressure

Exactly

Landscapingvol- would that booster be willing to pay the buyout for an EFFECTIVE coach? That's been the problem, UT goes the cheap route and ends up with a bad choice, then fire him pay buyout, hire next coach who doesn't work out, fire him pay buyout rinse and repeat. Hire a proven winner and none of this is a problem.

Butch is on thin ice not because of the loss but because of how we looked losing. Tennessee appeared to be the much better team but was consistently put in positions to fail.

You guys are staring to figure out what LSU figured out last year. The top guys don't get you even at the table without $100m+... that just gets you to the table... most probably you are looking at $150m over 10 years if not more.

Times have indeed changed. There are no longer just 10-15 marquee jobs anymore. Schools like TCU and MSU are paying 5 million per year.

UT is so far behind not only in head coach salary, but also assistants, that it shouldn't be hard to see why we can't compete at the highest level. You want to know why we have Larry Scott for an OC. It is because Butch didn't have 1+ million to spend on that position.

Money talks. And right now UT's bullsh!t walks. We are way behind the times.

Who's going to pay him more?

And so begins another endless stream of "fire Butch" and "who can we get to replace him" threads. It was a lame performance by our coordinators and coach, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that we can snap our fingers and do better. All one has to do is look at texas, georgia, notre dame, florida, others--and alabama before saban--to see that getting a top coach is hard. Coaches depend on their coordinators, and our coordinators were the problem in this game. At key moments, they and their units wet the bed.

I foresee 8-4 in some form or fashion. Jones and Sexton lobby for a raise but come up empty. Butch ends up some where like Iowa State or Texas Tech.

I don't disagree with your assessment of the coordinators. But, the coordinators have changed, yet the results remain the same. There is one common denominator....

Currie and Haslam are the only two that matter in the decision. The AD and Haslam have always been the only two that matter. Currie has no ties nor loyalty to Butch if he's not winning and he has Haslam's ear.

I would rather have Les Miles than Chip Kelly. At least Miles can recruit in the south and the LOS would be Johnny Majors tough. Kelly would be spread and shotgun with a gassed defense and have to score 50 every week to win. His nutty approach on offense would last in the sec as long as it did in the NFL or less. He knows nothing about defense and without it, you are never going to win the SEC. Forget about Kelly, his people skills SUCK and he would not relate to players in the south. Forget it, just forget it. GBO!!!!!

Shoop was thought to be the answer--and is getting something like $1 M, isn't he? Our assistants are not exactly starving. Jones hired Scott to keep him happy and recruiting in florida, more than anything, IMO--and you can't hire a coordinator for those reasons. The coordinators have to be great coaches, first and foremost--and if necessary you let the other assistants carry the recruiting load.

I posted this elsewhere, but it is relevant here:

Butch's buyout = 7.5 million
New Coach first year = Around 4-5 million or more
New Coach's buyout = Around 0-1 million or more

So, a coaching change is around a 12-15 million outlay. That isn't chump change.

Buy out get paid over time, not in a lump sum payment. His buyout also gets off set by his salary when he takes another job. Butch makes $4.6M, so if you pay say $7M it's only a $2.4M difference. So it'd really look like this

Butch buyout of $7.5 over 3yrs= $2.5M
New coach say $7M (7-4.6=) $2.4M
New coach buyout (maybe none) $1M
Current coach buyouts. $1M

Total immediate additional cost for 2018
$6.9M

Obviously these are estimates but the immediate cost would not be as substantial as some on here are claiming but the $7M tab has to be picked up. Considering our pathetic leadership and primary boosters got us all in this mess I'd have no problem putting my hand out if I was Currie, "fork it over so I can fix this mess that you created by hiring Dooley."

I will agree that we ponied up for Shoop, swung and missed. But, we should be paying top of the market for all of our coaches if we want to be a top program.

1+ million is the going rate for any accomplished coordinator.

I like the way you think.

My first call is to Chip Kelly, my next call is to Bobby Petrino, my third call is to Dan Mullen. Those are the only 3 options

Def plausible. According to some, he reached out to Purdue this past offseason.
