2017 Vols will have the #1 or #2 ranked DEFENSE in the SEC

What about their performance against Alabama? Played them close for 3 quarters. They played Alabama better than anybody until Clemson in the championship game.

They took a one point lead immediately after halftime, and then Bama skulldrug them the rest of the way. Quit pretending that game was something other than what it was.

Plus you keep ignoring most of those 5 losses came after their starting QB went down. Under Trevor Knight they were a completely different team.

Knight only missed two games, one of which was a loss. He started each of the other 4 losses. And here you prented to actually watch games.

They played better against Nebraska cause they actually got a little more healthy. Its not cherry picking. It's showing a direct correlation that injuries have to performance. And before you start up about Georgia Tech, check my other posts. I've already discussed it extensively.

So GT should be expected to rush for 500+ every single game? Lol ok.

No. But they'll be among the nation's leaders in rushing and they'll be playing for the ACC championship in December.

Is it really that hard to admit the Vols struggled a bit? Is it so bad they probably won't end up with the #1 defense? Are you really sticking to this stupidity when you already failed miserably in 2016 (and then gave some excuse about that being a trial run)? In 2016 you predicted the Vols winning the first game by around 50. Maybe you should stop jinxing the Vols.

???

Please cite a quote of me saying we didn't struggle defensively? I've said multiple times already we struggled mightily against the Georgia Tech option. The only difference between me and the rest of y'all is I don't think struggling against the option means anything going forward. PERIOD.

You can struggle in a game and it can be just a result of the matchup and have no bearing on your season moving forward. That's all I've said about that game. We struggled against Tech's option. Part of it was Georgia Tech is really good offensively this year. Part of it is poor defensive coaching and play on our part. But I didn't see anything from the defense that can be exploited going forward. It's not like we lack the speed or athletes or big bodies to be really good defensively. That's all I've said.

Football isn't just about how big you are or how quick you can run the fourty.

Our defense has given up ridiculous numbers over the past few games. I've heard lots of reasons why... But, if Bob Shoop is the defensive guru like we were all made to believe, this shouldn't happen. There is a serious problem with our defense. Hopefully the problem gets solved soon.

GTech went for a whopping 335 total yards against Jacksonville State; 210 yards rushing - let that sink in!

After playing an FCS powerful, Tennessee moved up to 95 overall and next to last in the SEC (South Carolina 107). On our way to the #2 D in the SEC. Only have to average 276 yards less that Vandy who currently has the top d in the SEC.

Luckily we also moved up 2 spots in rushing d up to 126 from dead last in the NCAA. We top powerhouses, ULCA, Louisiana and Fla Atlantic none of which play in the SEC.

We only need to average 279 yards a game to catch Alabama (second in the sec 49 ypg) and 297 ypg to reach LSU (1st at 31 ypg).

Luckily Florida is the next SEC team above us in both categories so we can shoot up the rankings next game. Wll on our way D$H, well on our way.

Go back and look at our rushing production in 2015 against elite defenses like Florida and Alabama. Then compare it to what we did against North Texas that year. The transitive property doesn't work like that in sports. Teams regularly have down games against inferior opponents after putting it to a elite opponent.

I was watching the end of the Alabama-Fresno State game yesterday and the announcers said that Fresno State gained as many yards against the Alabama defense as Florida State. They also scored more points.

Does that mean that Fresno State is a better football team than Florida State? Or does this simply mean Alabama wasn't up for them like they were FSU the week earlier? And that they also played a lot of young guys because they wanted to see what they could do?

I don't know why its so hard for ya'll to comprehend that one game doesn't affect the next.

So in our last say....10 games what game has our Defense "gotten up for?"

FTR, scoring defense is the most important defensive stat. The goal is to keep the opponent from scoring not simply limiting their yardage. I could care less about yards given up. We'll be top 2 in opponent's scoring BY THE END OF THE SEASON. And also as we approach the middle of the year, advanced stats like DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY (which taken into account the quality of opponent you face) become critical.

Opponent's yards per game (and even scoring average) this EARLY in the season when the quality of opponents teams face is so different is WORTHLESS. Wait until we're in the thick of SEC play before you start making conclusions about our defense. At that point everyone will have played a couple of quality opponents and we'll know which defenses are actually good and which just looked good cause they played nobodies.

Do you hold a patent on portable goalposts? Because you are constantly moving those bad boys.

Changing what tune? We'll be top 2 in the SEC defensively this year. Never wavered from that. I'm simply responding to people who keep posting opponent's yards per game as if that is the most important defensive stat.

The most important defensive stats are DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY (because it takes into account the quality of opponent) and SCORING DEFENSE (because points are the most important metric in football not yards).

Tennessee will be top 2 in the SEC in those 2 all-important defensive metrics. Rushing, Passing yards, total yards, etc. are all superfluous.

Defenses are ranked based on how many yards they give up.

You like using the word "transitive" a lot. You fail to acknowledge how awful the defense looked against GTech and I will venture to say that GTech will not rush for anywhere near the number they hung on the Vols against any of their remaining opponents - transitive or not.

You are going to have a rude awakening as the season progresses in regards to the Vols defense. As others have said herein, defenses are judged on their statistics. It will be an interesting read when you begin to comprehend that the Vols are not going to have the #1 or #2 defense in the SEC. But I am sure you will make up a number of excuses.

Yeah, cant expect the #2 defense in the SEC to tackle a running that they know will carry the ball more than 80 of the time. That would be crazy to expect. Instead we let them break a school record in rushing so we could disguise our #2 sec d.
