He is what he is....an 8-9 win career average coach, who ALWAYS finds a way to lose a game he shouldn't, and may occasionally win a surprise too.
He does it clean, and his players get good grades. He is a cartoon character for the media with his cliches and over the top catchphrases. He is a fantastic program manager, and a suspect game manager. He has proven to be a formidable recruiter, while being a questionable developer of talent. He is classy, and positive while managing to be campy and annoying. He will regularly get you to a bowl game, unfortunately it will be one you really don't want to go to. He is a dream come true for a mid-major or lower tier P5 team, and a point of derision for what should be a top-15 team. He is something for everybody, and quite simply the most divisive coach in our history. He is an enigma wrapped in a riddle.
I'm not sure if he is too low on the list or not, but he shouldn't nearly round out the top half.
This is about as accurate a synopsis of Butch so far as could be written. Well done.
But is it predictive? Is what we've seen what we're gonna see?
I'm kinda worried the answer is 'yes', and really hoping that it's 'no'.
We'll see.
Why is Tom Hermann getting this much love? Guy had way more talent than anyone BY FAR in their conference and didn't win it. That's in the AAC. At best he's a AAC version of what everyone says Butch is. I digress.
I counted 12 guys ranked above Butch that shouldn't be.
Babers
Addazio
Mora
Orgeron
Rhule
Hermann
Chryst
Mendenhall
Anderson
Brohm
Clawson
Riley
Butch consistently wins games. It's not as many as we want or should want, but you know you will win 8 or 9 games with him as a coach. Several of these guys don't do that or have done it at a lower level. I'm beginning to believe Wisconsin is a P5 version of Boise. Everyone wins there. The guys that have left haven't won as much at their new homes.
He's not top 25. But I'd take him over every coach I've listed and a few more (I just figure something of those to be break evens so I didn't list them).
It's been "yes" throughout his career....no matter where he's been. Football is football, no matter what conference you're in. The athletes change, but the rules, and strategies remain pretty static. I think even the most stalwart Butch supporter is realistic that Butch Jones will never be a perennial championship (of any kind) contender. They like him because he's better than the last guy, and the guy before him....not because he's likely to ever get much better than he is now.
Some people look back to how bad we were, some want to look forward to how good we should be. It's all a matter of perspective, and apparently very divisive.
Tweet about the article ranking the coaches....
Hearing there is some consternation out there about our ranking of Butch Jones. It was unanimously low. Ballots: 46-49-50-53-54.

What I saw last night was "Butch wasn't as bad as his ranking and Harbaugh wasn't as good as his." Then it did what it normally does. I honestly didn't get the "feel" of an actual comparison.
Jmo.
Peterson made the playoffs at Washington....
I would rather have almost any coach on that list except for Orgeron and Addazio.

One upset does not a coach make. Stupid post. He's brought us to the point we expect championships.A year ago, I would've said no way....thought he was definitely one of the top 20 or 25 coaches in college ball.
Then Vandy and South Carolina happened. Heaping those on top of a few questionable in-game decisions that came before, and a bit of public relations foot-in-mouth disease, and now...just not sure.
This season should tell the tale, one way or the other.
