Josh Dobbs - NFL Draft thread (merged)

How do you get that "Butch Jones simply wasted his potential...?" Dobbs had one of the all-time best passing seasons for a Tennessee QB last season. The offense put up big numbers.

I don't get it.

He wasted him cause he should have done even more. Butch Jones literally waited until we were down 2-3 TDs before he started letting Josh throw the ball downfield or run the ball. His gameplan was always let me run Hurd right up the middle into the gut of the defense.

I seriously don't know how people can defend this. We all complained about it last year as it was happening. Butch Jones simply wouldn't let Dobbs go off until we were down by a lot.

We would have won more games more easily if he let Dobbs go from the start.

I wish Dobbs well, but he is not an NFL caliber QB, regardless of his draft position. The league is desperate for QB talent, Dobbs is a 6th round talent that will go much higher due to the Dak Phenomenon.

I wouldn't bet on Dobbs, but I wouldn't bet against him, either. The transition to the NFL is a crapshoot at best. A lot of it has to do with the situation you are drafted into.

Somebody mentioned Brady. But, had Brady been drafted in the sixth round by a team like the Browns, he likely never would have made a ripple in the NFL. Getting drafted by Belichik and the Patriots led him down a different path.

Same thing applies for nearly every player in the league.

As I look at those stats - Josh Dobbs has quietly made a place for himself in the UT record books.

To say his talent has been wasted is just untrue and laughable.

If Butch Jones didn't wait until we were down by double digits to let Dobbs loose, those numbers would be even more impressive.

I can't wait to see what Josh does in the NFL with a coach that will utilize his talents for a full 4 quarters.

The reality is that if it wasn't for Daks success , Dobbs stock wouldn't be rising. They have similar skill sets so they are indeed comparable.

There is truth to this, because it is a copy cat league. But, even so, good for Dobbs. I hope he makes the most of his opportunity.

The problem last year was not the offense.

Injuries hurt the defense in the second half of the season. However, ineffectiveness in the first half offensively hurt us all year.

The offense was terrible until we were down double digits. And at that point Jones would scrab the failed gameplan and just let Dobbs loose and we would make a frantic comeback.

That and not playing Kamara more at the start of the year are facts Butch Jones will not be able to live down.

How did he do against Bama last season? ... but what about all those times when we were ahead in 2015 season?

Also, about Dobbs... there is SO much tape on him. Scouts can tell if he did or did not get better as his career started.

NFL teams will take a gamble on Trubinsky because there is little tape. It's almost like "I rather know less than more" mentality

Sorry, but it wasn't just the "last half of the season."

I like to look at SEC games, because those are the real barometer.

The defense gave up over 40 points three times (ATM, Ala and Vandy in the 3rd, 4th and 8th conference games). All three were losses.

- It gave up in the 30s another three times, with all surprisingly ending in victory. This shows that the offense was exceptionally strong last season. It is very difficult to win SEC games when giving up over 30.

- And, in the twenties twice (Flo and SC), which resulted in a win and a loss.

The offense scored over 30 points in six out of eight SEC games and only managed to go 4-2 in those games. The only two bad games by the offense were SC (thanks Hurd) and Ala (whole team just played poorly in that one).

So, in summary, we had a 6-2 SEC offense and a 2-6 defense. So, we ended at 4-4.

When you score 30+ points in multiple SEC games and still can't get victories, you are in a world of trouble.

I can easily see Houston taking 2 QBs. Similar what Redskins did when they drafted RG3 in round 1 and Cousins in round 4.

1st round - Kizer

3/4th round - Dobbs

Houston has a load of talent and is only a good QB away from making some real noise. If a young QB can go in there and give that franchise some confidence in that position, they could have a long, distinguished career.

ESPN’s Todd McShay was all aboard on Thursday morning, becoming the first major analyst to suggest the Tennessee quarterback could be selected in the first round of the upcoming draft.
“I also think Josh Dobbs from Tennessee is going to go early second round if he doesn’t snack into the late first,” McShay said during an appearance on the “Mike and Mike Show.”
Mel Kiper Jr. said last week on an ESPN conference call that Dobbs could go in the second or third round.
The more Dobbs appears before NFL personnel, and the closer they look, the more they seem to like him.

It will be mind blowing if it happens. Going into last season I thought he would be a 6th or 7th round project at best, and after the SCAR game I didn't expect him to even get drafted but he really turned it on late and had an unbelievable Senior Bowl.

You deserve every bit of praise and success in the world Josh. GBO

I don't disagree with your overall assessment but I never thought the SCAR game was make or break for his draft stock. Every QB has the occasional bad game. It's not like the 96 Memphis game really hurt Manning's stock.

Besides... now that we know he had a huge project due in one of his aerospace classes I thinks it's easy to understand why he seemed out of it that game. I think NFL teams can forgive him for puttiing him extremely challenging academics first that week.

Peyton had multiple stinkers against Vandy in there, too. Hurd didn't help the team in that SC game, either.

If Dobbs goes in the first round, CBJ should refund UT about $500k for underachievement.

What is damning about Jones to me is that the NFL people are saying that Dobbs had virtually no development.

D4H was very right when he said Jones is one of the biggest wasters of talent.

Can you quote those NFL people? I would like to see those quotes.

Butch isn't a QB guru. CBJ is just a good recruiter. We all knew that Dobbs would've been more successful if he had an actual QB coach involved but for some reason he thought maybe Dobbs could be "smart" enough to learn on his own.

I'm sure that's a reason why CBJ finally got a better staff and QB coach

D4H - you never answered my question.

If no QBs are selected in 1st round do you still believe Dobbs is a 2nd rounder.

I believe the team most likely to take Dobbs in the 1st round would be the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 30th overall pick. Remember Mike Tomlin was the only head coach at Josh's pro day and they apparently hit it off. And they are desperate for a QB given Roethlisberger's age and injury history.

As I reported earlier this week, the Los Angeles Chargers with the 38th overall pick overall in the 2nd round are prepared to take Dobbs. I guess the other teams in love with Dobbs have also heard this and are going to try and position themselves ahead of the Chargers if they want to get him. This might force Pittsburgh to just pull the trigger in the late 1st round if a bunch of teams are waiting in the early 2nd round for Josh.

Reported? Hahahaha!

That's unlikely to happen which is why I didn't respond.

But if you want me to answer fantasy questions then yes I still think he goes in the second round because there are enough teams with QB needs that would spend a 2nd round pick on him.
