Georgia Tech with a message to Tennessee....

When this game was announced last year I was terrified, but after this off season I'm thinking we got this. Everybody relax, This was WHY Butch brought in new line coaches.

i'm confused...why is this a bold statement? he didn't predict a result....

I don't know Pappy that sounds an awful lot like the GT coach thinks we're a walkover, they show up and walk over us like they did the other SEC East teams. KB has a point IMO.

Because it's perfectly normal at UT to have literally, months of practice, a first string stocked with juniors and seniors, and then in the first game of the season, not be able to handle a Sunbelt team in 4 quarters of regulation play?

And where did you pull the statement about having a first team stocked with juniors and seniors The key ingredient is quality experienced players. There are many tams with juniors and seniors who lose Sunbelt teams.

Dude...you guys are the only school in the ncaa that tries to defend cut blocks.

Get a clue..

Is this for me? Maybe it's because all other fan bases are clueless and want to complain about cut blocks, but don't even know their own team does them. Of course other fan bases aren't going to defend it if it's not brought up about them doing it, because people are clueless. Go back a page and look at the pictures of y'all doing it, do y'all have complaints every game about cut blocks? Of course not, because people dont do research and they don't know it's a part of pretty much every team.

Get a clue...

If this was not for me, I apologize in advance.

Who said that? I'm not sure where you keep getting this stuff.

We didn't spend months preparing for Appy State, and one close opening-win doesn't counter the point that Butch has generally done well with time to prepare (bowl games and open dates).

Should UT need to spend months preparing specifically for App State?

We did have a spring and fall comp in 2016 correct? A substantial amount of practice prior to our first game?

Awfully bold Coach Johnson. Thanks for the bulletin board material.

It is not bold when you realize he lines up against Butch.....

It's a true statement. GT is 3-0 against SECE teams and Tennessee is next game up. If Team 121 doesn't want it to be 4-0, they can do something about it. It should motivate them to make it 3-1.

Butch has a perfect record in bowl games, but his record with "time to prepare" last year wasn't exactly sterling.

Tennessee almost (should have) lost to App after having all season to get ready and the loss to South Carolina was after the bye week.

That's not actually a true statement. Currently, in 2017, Ga Tech is 0-0 against SEC teams. If you go back one year, they were 3-0 in 2016. If you go back as far as 2010, they have been 5-6 vs the SEC. That's a losing record.

But I'm not sure what 2016 or 2010-present have to do with the 2017 Vols-Ga Tech game.

The more pertinent stat from the past for that game, if you want to invoke history, would be this:

Ga Tech is 17-24-2 against Tennessee all-time. That's a 58% win record for the Vols, 42% for Tech.

None of that is really applicable to the upcoming contest, though, because no player on either team contributed to any of those past games.

I like our chances.

Go Vols!

He knows he's catching us in a rebuilding year. Not sure what they're bringing back, but the beauty of that system is that they can succeed with lesser talent. Will be a tough, tough opener.

It's a tough opener for injuries. The GT chop blockers.

He just watched the Vandy replay.

GT is easy to prepare for if you have time.

Which is why they lose a lot of openers, bowl games, and to teams who had a BYE week before playing them.

It's a pretty common pattern.

Vols should win.

Vols should win.

That is the conventional wisdom, but it doesn't play out in fact.

In fact, Ga Tech is 9-4 since 2010 in their openers and bowl games. Sure, a few of those openers are against cupcakes like Alcorn State and West Carolina, but some of them--and all the bowl games--are against decent programs, teams like Va Tech, a Dak Prescott-led Mississippi State, and USC (the western USC, not South Carolina).

Of course, the biggest factor in bowl wins is preparation...which teams show up to play hard, and which just show up for the bright lights and paid vacation. Paul Johnson meticulously prepares his team to play each game, it's one of his trademarks.

So no, this is no gimme, but still...we got this. Shouldn't even be particularly close.

Lol they are 3-1 over their past 4 bowl games and 4-0 over the past 4 openers. Those are the times teams have most to prepare for. So it's a pretty common patter for GT to prepare better than the opposing team they are playing after a long break.

Now, having said the same thing as you before you did, I'm gonna have to balance you out a bit.

Those four opening day wins were against:

- Boston College
- Alcorn State
- Wofford
- Elon

I wouldn't exactly say you depended on excellent preparation to beat those powerhouses.

I do give Ga Tech credit for beating some decent bowl teams, like Miss State and USCw. Then again, see my comments above about the key factor in bowl wins/losses.
