Derek Barnett combine

I'll bite.

Based off of college production? Barnett. Based off of long term NFL production...who the hell knows.

People should recall, Reggie White was not the Reggie White we all love and adore now, while in college. He did not become the feared defender we all remember him as until he got to the NFL. That is not saying he wasn't a good to great DL in college...he was great...just not as great as people tend to remember him being because of the beast he turned into in the NFL.

JMO of course. :hi:

Can't compare them physically either. Reggie (according to the Packers on multiple occasions) Ran a 4.6 40 at 300lbs.

I've written about Reggie and Barnett before, and as good as Barnett is (The best defensive player the SEC has seen at his since Pollack based on useage, and stats relative to their position) trying to say he's Reggie because he broke Reggie's record completely understates how dominant Reggie became once he was older. It's like trying to compare Shaq at LSU to NBA Shaq. One was a great college player, an all time great at his school even. The other was one of the most dominant forces to ever see the court and is one of the 15 or so best players all time.

Reggie is just like that for defense in the NFL. The most physically dominant player at his position that ever lived. Cannot compare a rookie to him, or even a 5 year player.

Kongbo and Darrell Taylor will do a lot better than Barnett in these drills. If they produce this year, both might be drafted higher too.

Yeah he always had such a damn good bend. Probably his best asset. It'll be interesting to see how that works in the NFL

How that works in the NFL? It's science

It is the most effective angle at which to attack a 6'6" 300 pound man

Derek Barnett will be just fine in the league and more productive than all but maybe one or two DL in this draft

Not to mention they actually call holding in the NFL

Barnett is gonna go first round, likely first 15 picks despite the combine drills, because of his film......3 years of outstanding, productive film. The combine is good and all, but it's more about being a better football player imho.

Garrett is a freak. Von Miller 2.0.
I think our guy showed his blue collar work ethic by pushing thru sickness today. Both are first round guys. Potentially both off the board in the first ten picks...

Yes agreed DB will be one of the most fouled players the moment he steps into the league

It was unbelievable how many times DB got held, with no call. I wonder the percentage of how many times he got held, compared to the amount of times a flag actually got thrown.

Garrett is an amazing athlete...only thing I would question would be his drive...like Clowney, I don't think he brings it every play

Speaking of Texans, I really like Mercilus, he never quits and that is what I expect from Barnett in the NFL.

These sycophants are drooling over Garrett. Give it a rest boys. We know he's a big, fast, powerful athlete. How good a football player is he? Meh.

He's a great football player. Watch the tape not the box score.

He's the clear-cut #1 overall pick and a future Hall of Famer.

Heard from different guys on NFL network saying that they respect Barnett for participating through sickness. One guy said no matter how he performed today, it wouldn't affect his draft stock because of how good his film was

I actually thought he looked better than I expected. He showed up in the best shape of his career. His 40 looked fast even if it was just 4.88. And he moved smoothly on the field.

Overall I left the combine with a better opinion of Derek.

He'll be a really good NFL player. I just don't see him being a difference maker likes Myles Garrett.

Anybody that needs a DE and passes on this guy will regret it. Garrett put up his big numbers against G5 schools. Barnett brought it against SEC schools. Can't measure this guys heart and 'want to'.

This is actually a very deep class of pass rushers so I doubt it.

Here are my edge rusher rankings:

1. Myles Garrett (Texas A&M)
2. Solomon Thomas (Stanford)
3. Tarell Basham (Ohio)
4. Derek Rivers (Youngstown St.)
5. Charles Harris (Missouri)
6. Derek Barnett (Tennessee)
7. Taco Charlton (Michigan)
8. Jordan Willis (Kansas State)

All 8 should be first rounders.

Just to be sure. We're saying the same thing, right?

Garrett is a freak but Von Miller is a terrible comparison. He's 2 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Von. And ran the 40 at 4.64 compared to Von's 4.53 at 30 pounds lighter.

Myles Garrett is Bruce Smith 2.0. That's who he shares a body type with. And when I watch the tape I see a similar athlete.

Myles Garrett is a future Hall of Famer.

Reggie set the sack record while playing tackle. Nobody else has ever had that kind of production from the DT spot. In his last year he was double and tripled teamed all year and he still couldn't be blocked.
