John Currie introductory press conference discussion thread

Both Davenport and Currie have enuf energy to fuel the Oak Ridge plants. :eek:hmy:
She said she doesn't drink coffee. I can't imagine her being on caffeine.
Both well spoken and extremely fast talkers.
Both seem smart and use proper grammar.
Several questions to Currie about him needing to "unify" the big orange family. He basically avoided that and said he just needs to listen to everyone and work really hard.
He def looks the part of an A.D.
He seems like an all business type.
If you know Meyers-Briggs personality types, he is a driver driver. Very left brain dominant.
Not warm and fuzzy. No Mr. Nice guy.
E.g. If you went to him with an emotional personal problem, he would prob just say, "buck up, buttercup, now get out of my office while I down another pot of coffee while I'm multi tasking five real problems".

Bottom line, we as fans prob won't care if the coaches and staff in the UTAD like him or not.
We just want winning programs.
As is true anywhere, WINNING matters most of all.

He does check a lot of the boxes, you're right, being an active AD at a power five school. But for all of those who think the program needs unity, I think it's fair to question his track record as not being a relationship guy.

Chris Low said it well yesterday, it doesn't really matter if we like the guy or not. He'll be judged on four things:

1. championships
2. financial progress
3. uniting the Tennessee fan base
4. staying out of the NCAA's dog house

If he can accomplish those four things, everyone will love him.

If you do 1, 2 and 3 will come naturally imo

True. He does those things and we're all good. But unfortunately for him, given his history here, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from the beginning. He has his work cut out for him. Half the fan base is already looking at him suspiciously.

Half the fan base would be p'd off if Jesus Christ had been named AD. Heck, half of the folks on here wake up PO'd and I hope they own their own businesses because if not their boss has to be sick of them most every day.

It doesn't matter who he did and didn't mention. I honestly believe we have 6-6 regular seasons the next 2 years and he would praise Butch for having winning seasons. Heck even if he did fire him he would just replace him with a newer version of Jones/Dooley.

He was hired to go fundraise and bring in money to the school and that is the only thing he has a good resume doing. The chancellor doesn't care about sports and as long as we are mediocre she can sell us as a school with "winning" athletics, even though the teams won't actually be competitive for any titles. They just have more winning seasons than losing seasons.

No he won't be able to do any of that. If BJ is here after having two 6-6 seasons, there won't be hardly anyone left to sell whatever that is you believe they could throw out. Give the fan base a little more credit than that. Under Dooley, I believe the stands were half full at homecoming.

Sounds flaky and all over the place imo. I prefer calm and professional to what I heard from him.

KB you are losing a little credibility by latching on to every conceivable thing to dog the guy. I can't get a feel for either one of them but they are obviously cognizant of the levels of displeasure with the hiring process. I like his energy but he doesn't feel very sincere. I will continue to have a wait and see mentality.

Not true imo. 90% of the fan base would be on the same page, unified and stoked had Blackburn been the guy. Probably 75% had it been Fulmer. Instead, we got a 50/50 split at best with a guy who's first job is to spend time reaching out to fix relationships that his actions broke prior to his departure for KState.

That's a fair statement.

Those two make watching a press conference seem like work.

They both act like they aren't getting enough sleep.

Best advice I can give them is enjoy a long weekend off and be ready come Monday.

Not impressed with the overall demeanor I'm seeing.

Me either.

I'm trying to remain open minded.
I feel better when someone has a resume of winning programs underneath them.
Along with the recruiting compliance discussion.

These are my honest concerns but I'm about sick of people here acting like we're not allowed to have an opinion and discuss it openly.

I'll continue to be open minded too, but at this particular moment, I don't really care for him or her, it's not really fair, but it's honest.

Someone posted that we'll just have to see how well he hires new coaches. I hope he has to hire a women's basketball coach before a football coach.

I would not let mending fences dominate my time if I were him. He's got lots of work to do to make UT relevant in sports. My gosh! Look at what the men's and Lady Vols B-ball teams have done the last 24 hours. The boosters and fans have already given a lot of money towards the Athletics programs. It's time for some much higher ROI.

And this adm has had this priority in order for a long time

Some folks that passionately love UT have been kicked in the crotch by this adm for a loonnng time. I understand the concern.

I like him, seems like a guy that will get $hit done. He's a straight forward guy that gets the big picture. I think this is a good hire.

Anyone think Davenports reaction to the question about the hiring process screams, Big Jim Haslam had a note saying to hire Currie on her desk the second she got on campus

These press conferences don't accomplish anything besides giving us fanatics fodder for discussion that we can beat into the ground.

I thought Davenport was mostly likable, I just don't really understand why's she's on lockdown about the process.

Maybe she went against the advice of everyone and acted on her own accord. Or maybe she was told who to hire and doesn't want that known.

Could be nothing - but avoiding talking about it does lend to folks thinking something was amiss with it.

Anyone critical of Currie at this point #1. Has an agenda #2. Has no clue about Curries credentials #3. Really loves to hate. I don't see many other options....As I said the first day this broke...He is really well respected among his peers...and that hasn't changed....

I don't care for him. I don't have an agenda, I have a "clue" about his credentials and I don't love to hate. Now what?

I don't know this guy and I don't consider him a UT guy. The fact that he was associated with Hamilton should send up red flags for everyone. It's questionable whether the committee even looked at this guy and I'm shocked to think Davenport would actually make a unilateral decision to hire this guy. I'll give him and Davenport a chance only because I have to but these two are going to have prove themselves and it's going to be a Mount Everest type battle.

Seeing how he has a number 1 Jersey scares me. He may leave in the middle of his 3rd year since we said we would run with a fullback and didn't....
