John Currie introductory press conference discussion thread

This dude is barely announced and all the so-called AD experts here are dismissing him as a failure. Unbelievable. My view, give the guy a chance. At least he's not from Bama, or any other school, he's a Tennessee guy. Hanging my hat on that for now. Flame away flame throwers.

Have no choice but to give him a chance. He starts well behind the 8 ball for me. Silver lining is that I actually have a higher affinity for Butch after hearing this guy. I almost feel bad for him.

Don't bring his name up at all. No reason to do so.

I actually didn't see the context of Z's post when I replied. It is kinda odd he brought up Fulmer by name... and he didn't mention Butch at all, I don't believe.

Chris Low: I think John Currie acknowledged just about everybody but Butch Jones.

Maybe. I just took it as 'remember I'm a Tennessee guy.'

Yeah that was definitely his overall message during his speech, but he could have just as easily said the women's basketball team hanging banners. It's probably nothing, but who knows? It could've been a Freudian slip.

It was odd given his history with Phil. And I think you're right, mentioned Barnes and Weekly, don't think he said anything about Holly and didn't mention Butch iirc.

Davenport seemed a little evasive on whether the search committee interviewed Currie. She was asked twice and I'm not sure she answered.

Davenport a little snippy with Hubbs. Didn't like being pressed, didn't answer his question.

Currie just mentioned Fulmer again, this time in the press conference.

I don't like him. Lol.

I'm trying to remain open minded.
I feel better when someone has a resume of winning programs underneath them.
Along with the recruiting compliance discussion.

These are my honest concerns but I'm about sick of people here acting like we're not allowed to have an opinion and discuss it openly.

Why do both Currie and Davenport keep asking "did you hear me out there" on the podium during the introduction. It's a press conference, just answer the questions. Seem on edge/defensive.

Doing a really solid job here. I think Davenport taking questions was really curious though.

My personal thought is this is a good hire (even before today). We need an AD who will get on people's asses. His profile at K-State says that. Excellent with money. Will keep UT out of trouble. Can he hire? That will be the big question.

It doesn't matter who he did and didn't mention. I honestly believe we have 6-6 regular seasons the next 2 years and he would praise Butch for having winning seasons. Heck even if he did fire him he would just replace him with a newer version of Jones/Dooley.

He was hired to go fundraise and bring in money to the school and that is the only thing he has a good resume doing. The chancellor doesn't care about sports and as long as we are mediocre she can sell us as a school with "winning" athletics, even though the teams won't actually be competitive for any titles. They just have more winning seasons than losing seasons.

Davenport yes. Currie no. I think you are looking for something that's not there with him.

He's mentioned Dickey quite often, but I don't recall him bringing up Hamilton. :)

Asked about the Lady Vols issue, went straight into the rowing program at KState. Dude, just slow down and answer the questions sincerely, not like a politician.

I don't know what's there or not there, but to me he comes across like he's had about 18 cups of coffee.

He definitely is high energy. A change from Hamilton and Hart.

My cards are on the table, not crazy about the hire and nothing I've heard from either Currie or Davenport here has changed that.
