John Currie of K State Hired as AD

Who has he hired?

Snyder was never getting fired and he would have been crucified had he done so

I do not think it is who he has hired, but how he has ran their program. He has made it more profitable and better for student athletes by upgrading the facilities. He has increased their profit for 6 consecutive years. He is very adamant on providing an environment that is best for the student athletes.

Also, I am not getting caught up in all the K State stuff. It is Kansas State. They are not an elite program. So while they may not have had the success we would like to see in our AD, it is not like they are really capable of it. They do not have the resources, fan support, etc that we do at Tennessee. I think he did a great job to generate the success they did have, as well as generating more money for the program. Hell maybe Currie just flat out wanted to be at Tennessee too. He could have just been doing a job at K State, but actually care and want to succeed at Tennessee. We shall see my beloved friends.

PS. Now that is sunshine boys and girls.

My very first thought is, what happened with Frank Martin? Why did you let that guy leave?

I love the fact this was done without anyone having a clue. No insiders had a clue. I like this administration being able to do things without everything leaking.

I'm not arguing the money but would like to know he can hire the best choice for the job not another diamond in the rough guy.

"Since John Currie’s introduction as director of athletics in May 2009, K-State has experienced a tremendous turnaround, unprecedented athletic and academic accomplishments and perhaps the most successful seven-year period in department history. Driving toward the vision of a Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program, Currie’s rebuilt senior leadership team turned an inherited deficit into national acclaim as one of the NCAA’s most financially solvent programs and by August 2016 will have completed $210 million in comprehensive facility improvements benefitting all 16 Wildcat teams, including the Vanier Family Football Complex, West Stadium Center, Basketball Training Facility, Intercollegiate Rowing Facility, Mike Goss Tennis Stadium and soccer competition/football practice fields, all privately funded with zero state tax or university tuition dollars.

Currie leads one of the most productive and efficient programs in the country, and his seven-year tenure has included team Big 12 Championships in football (2012), men’s basketball (2013) and baseball (2013), 16 team NCAA tournament appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball, and 50 individual Big 12 and nine individual NCAA Championships. K-State student-athletes have shined academically as well, with three sports, including football, currently leading the Big 12 in APR rating and an all-sports graduation rate exceeding that of the general student body. Record attendance across all sports, including a current streak of 27 consecutive football sellouts, and careful stewardship help provide a tremendous home-field advantage for 450 Wildcat student-athletes, while adding value to the university, community and state as the only university in Kansas and one of just two dozen nationally to operate in the black without any state tax or university tuition dollars or subsidies.

Athletically Currie’s tenure has been marked by across the board success including a 2015-16 year that saw K-State football participate in its sixthstraight bowl game and volleyball advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. Highlighted by three NCAA Champions in track and field, the women’s team went on to finish tied for seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and eighth at the national indoor meet while also finishing third both indoor and outdoor at this year’s Big 12 Championships. Also, a total of eight track and field student-athletes claimed a total of 12 individual Big 12 Championships in 2015-16, while Jeff Mittie’s second year at the helm of the women’s basketball program saw the Wildcats return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. The 2012-13 campaign was also one for the ages as K-State became just the fourth BCS school since 1998 to win league titles in football, men’s basketball and baseball the same year, while K-State has held a 52-39 record since 2009 in head-to-head competition against in-state rival KU.

With the tag line of “Welcome to K-State” symbolizing the goal of providing The Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, K-State’s marketing and fundraising efforts have been completely overhauled in Currie’s tenure. K-State supporters have pushed attendance to new heights, while more than $200 million in total gifts have been raised for K-State Athletics in Currie’s seven years. Meanwhile, history was made as Currie and his staff worked hand in hand with then-President Kirk Schulz and the KSU Foundation to secure the largest individual donation in university history, a $60 million gift benefitting various academic and athletic initiatives, while the department reached its $50 million private gifts goal for the new Vanier Football Complex in just 13 months. Currie’s award-winning Fan Experience staff, which was named the national 2014 NACMA Marketing Team of the Year, has created new ticket initiatives that have led to 36 sellout crowds since 2009 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium - named in 2016 as one of five national finalists for the prestigious SportsBusiness Journal Sports Facility of the Year award - including a current streak of 27 straight.

The recipient of the 2013 Bobby Dodd AD Award and a 2013 UnderArmour AD of the Year, Currie served as chair of the Big 12 ADs in 2013-14 and is a member of the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet. He was one of only two intercollegiate ADs named to SportsBusiness Journal’s 2011 prestigious Forty Under 40 list of national sports leaders." - From K State

Now seriously look at that and say this is a bad hire. The guy has had success and he has Tennessee connections. I think that is exactly what all of us wanted, it is just not Blackburn. I like it. I will admit that I would like to know more about the coaches not liking him issue, but then again that might mean that he is not a push over. I will give him a chance.

Understand he made good financial decisions, and that definitely beats Hamilton.

Does anyone know if he made athletic hires while there and if they were good hires.. for Kansas State?

I don't expect to be blown away like he was making a hire at Florida or Alabama, but for Kansas state did he make good hires, if any?

He's been catching a lot of flak about Bruce Weber.

It is absolutely despicable that UT didn't even interview Blackburn, unbelievable. He will move on to another University and be a great AD.

Very disappointed that we didn't get a Tennessee guy when we had a very qualified candidate in our back yard. This really alienates the fan base. It's so discouraging being a Tennessee fan, but what can you expect? Maybe it'll work out. I just hate it for Blackburn, and honestly for Fulmer as well. I guess we'll wait and see.

He is a UT grad genius....

U Tennessee keeps showing other schools to do the opposite of what they do. UT can't get out of its own way. We can expect Butch to get an extension with a $40 mil buyout.

If they didn't get him for the job he won't be an assistant

Disagree. I think he really wanted the job and just as passionately wants to be around the program. Bet he signs up for higher level Condredge Holloway role.
