Give Jones credit

All he can do is address the issues that exist.

He's not gonna fire himself.

So....he's addressed each position that most all of us overwhelmingly agree needed to be addressed.

So until we see the fruits of that labor, we just have to take it for what it is. Recognition of the issues, and steps taken to fix said issues.

Which, at the end of the day, is what I what I wanted him to do. So I will give credit here.

The bad news...I don't know that these changes will have such an impact on this season, to make it any more than the 7/8 wins I currently expect.

Lots of transition=lots of ifs.

On many occasions I have used the expression, "They fired themselves.", usually it was right after doing something to get fired for.

CBJ is being judged by not only his own actions but all actions by any member of the football program, he needs to figure it out, all this lollygaging is getting old.

Release the Beast!

Hoke has not done well at his recent jobs so I'm not giving Butch credit just for hiring his buddy who is currently unemployed. Debord sucked when we needed it the most - against Vandy in second half and Muschamp. Florida and UGA were good wins but those programs were very weak compared to their historical norm. Both just beat us in recruiting and have positive momentum while Butch failed in his most important year 4 where the expectations were to win the east (minimum). Butch's overall SEC record is pathetic after 4 years, so I'm not sure what you mean by winning a hell of a lot of ball games (unless you count App State, Ohio, etc as meaningful wins).

If we lost to FL and GA then you would have counted them as wins CBJ needed but couldn't get. Since he won them they are meaningless. Sheesh

Ok. But how much credit do we give a guy for fixing a crisis he created? Do we really pat him on the back for having to fire one of his own hires?

OK, legit question above. Should we flame him for fixing his mistakes or should he have not made any staff moves and been happy with sub par performances, potentially causing his demise?

I give him credit for having the guts to make changes, and not let complacency set in like Fulmer late years. If he goes down, at least he'll go down on his terms at 100% effort. I personally think we have the chance to surprise some folks this year.

Jones does not deserve credit (no UT coach does after losing to Vandy and SCjr, and finishing out of top 10 in recruiting). Instead he should look for a new job asap while he can still get at least some credit for his early success in recruiting. With most key players gone, it's hard to imagine how next year won't be even worse than 2016. The only hope is that our DC (Butch's only great hire in 4 years) starts delivering something closer to his career average performance. Our offense will be very young and most likely struggle big time so much improved defense is our best hope next year. I hope I'm wrong but after all the disappointments we just went through with wasted talent and sub-par recruiting class it's hard to find reason to be optimistic.
OMG I feel like I need to go jump off a bridge or something 😨

Why does Jones not deserve credit for the following:

1) Bringing in Hoke when he could have easily just blindly picked someone.
2) Bringing in Warren who is an instant upgrade and sending the weak link and arguably the trouble in the locker room packing
3) Bringing in a stable full of Ace recruiters
4) Bringing in Debord without Debord no records are set and Dobbs is still the inaccurate young kid from Georgia
5) Beating Florida for the first time in 12 years
6) Beating Georgia for the first time in B2B seasons in years
7) winning a hell of a lot of ball games
Oh...here it comes. Somehow I feel like the words SCe and Vandy are coming lol

I thought it would be a cold day in hell before a UT fan valued a SCAR loss over a UF win, but I guess the years I spent in Knoxville during the UF dominance were all just a figment of my imagination. Spoiled fans are the worst, you read some off-season predictions on ESPN or SDS where UT was picked for the playoffs and immediately set the bar sky high.

Next time we go through a few bad years it's going to suck, but I will find comfort in knowing that fans like you will be really upset

So he should have hired "the best staff" in America on day one?

This, among other lines, has been beaten to death. Yes, it is cliche, but what on earth do you all want him to say?

He was hired here because of his past success. He brought a lot of the guys who were with him during that success. It has turned out that a fair amount of those guys weren't good fits, and he has done his best to improve on those spots with new hires.

To me, that seems like exactly what you would ask of a coach. He's made changes when necessary, and he seems to be working his a$$ off to build the best team and staff he can. Is some of his coachspeak annoying and over the top? Sure, but that's his job. He's not going to trash the program to the media. He's going to do his best to put UT on top, and he's going to consistently express that opinion to the media. Get over it.

You don't just fire members of "The Best Football Staff in the Country" willy-nilly.
You take a slow, deliberate approach and let them go one-by-one and hope no one notices until after they are all replaced and "The Best Football Staff in the Country" slowly but surely becomes the actual Best Football Staff in the Country. This could take years, or even decades, of course.

Give Jones credit? I must be in the Twilight Zone. Last I heard, Jones needed to be fired, because he wouldn't fire his buddies.

I never said those two wins are meaningless (if you read my post you would see I actually said they were good wins). However they are nowhere near enough to offset 2-2 vs Vandy, 0-3 vs Muschamp, 0-4 vs Bama (including 3 blowouts), and overall horrible record vs rest of SEC which is most important - much more so than non-conference games.

Love the Hoke hire. Im still uneasy about an OC with zero playcalling experience. Only time will tell. For everyone's sake, I hope they are immensely successsful. Go VOLS!

Doesn't matter. It's CBJ'S offense, just plug in a new OC and play on.

This is a healthy perspective.

Coach Jones deserves a lot of credit for putting out a raging dumpster fire, getting our trajectory back on a rising tangent, building recruiting relationships Dooley left for dead and revamping an inadequate coaching staff that he had once claimed was the best in America.

However, we can acknowledge that we do owe Butch some gratitude while at the same time reminding him that he is merely a caretaker of Tennessee football. He is not the owner.

If we post another 4-4 conference record this year and lose to the two of the SECe's worst programs, then it is wholly appropriate for us to both thank him for his successes to date and ask him to kindly find other employment.

While I think UT underachieved in 2016, Saying it was a bad year sounds a little spoiled to me. It can always be worse.

Robert Gillespie says:the_finger:

Great class,No. Sub-par? Not even close.
