I'm cool with letting the QB competition play out. As was said, it's a good problem to have if both guys are what we think they are.

No way I would pick one. I hitched my wagon to AJ Suggs and said "Casey Clausen looks like a b!tch." Fast forward to 2001- I admit my mistake and CC is one of my all time favorites.

Listening to finebaum for the first time in a long time. Alabama fans are so annoying. Of course UT fans would be too if we had won as often as they have lately.

Watch Sheriron Jones make noise in the offseason. He seems like he would be a great leader. Highly recruited guy. No reason he shouldnt be right in the thick of this QB competition.

Great, Jones wins the starting QB job in the Spring and Dormady and Guarantano both transfer. So UT.

That's hilarious. Sounds like something I would say.

QD isn't mobile at all. That said, I think he could be effective airing it out if given time.

Dormady isn't Dobbs, but from what little I've seen he does seem to be able to escape pressure and still make passes down field. Kid has a very good and accurate arm.

Weinke was a statue. Don't think he relates to pro-style QB because he's primarily worked with dual threats at the PROFESSIONAL level?

Pro style spread - which is when you use s mobile QB in spread offenses today. That's how Butch identified his offense from the beginning. Then he said he could modify it to zone read/read option or stay pro style spread depending on the talent at QB. Pro style spread is what they ran a lot at FSU and what Weinke coaches in pros. Not saying he was anything but a statue as a QB - he was. Worley was when he first ran it with us.

Scott was the same in his past. I'm just saying it would be more likely to be oriented that way. Doesn't mean it will in reality. Nobody knows anything at this point.

He posted in the Helfrich doesn't come thread- I had asked him previously his opinion of the news this week and he initially said it was upsetting. His news today was far more positive. Yes, he has always maintained Blackburn as AD but certainly didn't sound as confident earlier this week in his posts, at least in my opinion.

I know this isn't the most popular opinion on here but I would love to see what QD can do. If he get beat out of the job so be it but most forget that we were all tickled to death to get him. Now its like a kid getting a new shiny toy we want the new guy. What little we all got to see of QD, we saw a kid that can throw bullet and want forget hearing the WR's pad's pop 20 yrds across the field. I know we have heard that JG has great potential but he has yet to take a snap. So, let the QB competition begin and may the best man win.

So, not that anyone cares buuuut. Jalen Hurd still hasn't transferred. He hasn't asked Tennessee to speak with any school. He has till the 16th to declare for the draft. What is the kid doing?

He's going to declare. He has no other choice.

He's not waiting until 2019 to enter the draft.

He's right for sure about Dobbs. In hindsight I really don't think we can judge butch too harshly for this season, but the criticism is fair. The injuries were absolutely awful and that makes it hard to give an accurate assessment. However, the loss to Vanderbilt was inexcusable in my opinion. The team wasn't all there mentally as evidenced by our offense only scoring 3 points in the second half and our defense allowing Kyle effing shurmer to throw for 450 YARDS. That's something only a team as bad as Missouri even got close to allowing. Chalk the season up as a disappointment.

Here's the thing though: I personally think Butch can be a great coach. Guy can recruit and has an elite eye for talent (that includes coaches he hires on his staff). He is learning on the job and it's frustrating, but I think if we as a fan base are patient he will win big here. Problem is Saban has set an unattainable standard and every coach is expected to win immediately. My question is if we fire Butch who do we hire? What elite, can't-miss coach is available? The answer in my opinion is that there isn't one. At least not that is obvious. Could Dan Mullen be good? Possibly but I don't consider him a can't miss coach. Could we get mike gundy to come here? He was close to taking the job last time so maybe, but in the end he's at his alma mater and it's tough to pull someone away from ties like that.

Next year will tell us what Butch is made of I think. He and the program he has set up at UT have taken an absolute beating this past year. Will he use it as a chip on his shoulder or will it cause him to freeze up? If the team comes out and is competitive in every game next year then I say we give him another couple years (even if we go 7-5 with a bunch of close losses). If the team comes out unmotivated and gets blown out by the good teams we play then it's time to get rid of him because he doesn't have the toughness to coach in the SEC. I don't know about you guys but I'm excited for this next season. I hate being caught in this state of not knowing where the program is headed.

Go sign a top 13 recruiting class. Go get some good assistants. Go get David Blackburn. And then go kick everyone's a$$ next fall. GBO

Much obliged.

I am sure other coaches could do better, and Mahoney gets a lot of crap, but I believe it has more to do with system than player development. We have recruited some maulers at O-line, but it hasn't panned out for them all. An offensive lineman loves to run down hill and plow defenders. With the run pass option offense the linemen cannot take off into the defender like a true power run game. There is risk of penalty and being too far downfield if the QB decides to pass instead of hand off or QB option run. If they knew what the play design was every time I feel they would do better as a whole. The o-line is playing blind basically not knowing if the QB will run or pass. I know there are designed runs where they can fire off, but the system IMO has a lot to do with o-line deficiencies.

90% of college offenses run RPOs. The scheme is not the problem. The problem this year was lack of depth and preseason injuries to Thomas and Hall that forced several to play out of position. Then our best lineman Wiesman was injured. Then almost every lineman missed time at some point and we ended up playing Alabama with a 270 lb right tackle, but hey DeBord should have called better plays. lol
And we still put lots of points on the board for most of the season.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Quentin Dormady will never take a meaningful snap at Tennessee.

JG will be the starter against Georgia Tech.

IMO, if we could have started Kendrick, Robertson, Thomas, Wiesman, and Hall all year, we would have gone 11-1. Jones would have played a lot and Boulware and Richmond would have also gained valuable experience. Sadly that group played very little if any time together & if they did play together both Thomas and Hall were less than 100%.

Look for rules changes either this or next year that will effectively stop offensive lineman from going downfield like the NFL.
When that happens, RPO Gets thrown out the window

As you know, most on here are quite content with good, not great. I personally think it is representative of the entire fan base. I know it is of university officials. That says 1998 was an aberration not to be repeated anytime soon.

I disagree with this completely. No one is "content" with good not great. MAYBE a few, but definitely that's the rare UT fan. People on here confuse someone having a positive attitude and hoping for the best with being happy with mediocrity. I try to stay positive but I'm certainly not happy or content with not being great. We have the facilities, the history, the fanbase.....everything we need to be elite...... Except the university administration. They are ok with good but not great.
