SECN just flashed a stat that Jalen Hurts completes 26% of his passes when he is pressured and his QB rating is 2.0. Hmmm.... Clemson could bring some pressure and Sark is not Kiffin and we have no idea what kind of rapport they have. I am beginning to believe that Clemson has a legitimate shot to win.
Clemsons front 4 will bring the heat, blitzes will make Hurts look bad.

Bama can win the game with 30+ points, will take a great effort on D (good field positions/Defensive TDs/turnovers forced) and one or more of the RBs to be a difference maker.

In the end, I think Bama is the better team, but Clemson can find a way to win if they take care of the ball and get after Hurts.

Wednesday evening update from Hubbs...

Wednesday brought a couple of new names in terms of Butch Jones' coaching search. Tennessee is not only in a search for an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach.

“The number one priority that we have to do is get in here a great developer of quarterbacks,” Jones said Tuesday night. “Having some very talented quarterbacks in our program, the quarterback development is going to be obviously very, very important.”

The question is will Jones hire an offensive coordinator who is a quarterbacks coach or hire a quarterbacks coach who is not the play caller. If Jones makes an internal hire and promote Larry Scott then he's in the market for a quarterbacks coach. It's a move that we believe is very possible.

In terms of quarterback coaching candidates, two names to keep in mind are Chris Weinke, who was the quarterbacks coach this past year with the Los Angeles Rams. Prior to that Weinke was the head coach at IMG Academy in Florida.

Another quarterback coach to remember is Mike Canales. Canales is currently the Assistant Head Coach and running backs coach at Utah State. Canales spent the previous six years at North Texas where he was the offensive coordinator and was the interim head coach in 2015. Canales was the offensive coordinator at South Florida in 2007 and 2008 when he was there with Larry Scott.

Canales was also at NC State where he was Phillip Rivers quarterbacks coach.

We would expect Jones to talk to Weinke and Canales sooner rather than later, meaning by the weekend. It will be interesting to see if Butch goes to Nashville for the coaches convention or does his interviews elsewhere.

Obviously, there's been no movement on the defensive side of the ball but no one is ruling that out. Brady Hoke's name has been an often mentioned candidate if something happened on the defensive front. In the secondary, Terry Fair's name has been mentioned but by no means would that be a slam dunk if there was an opening there. As we mentioned in our Monday night chat, Bob Shoop worked with NC State defensive backs coach George Barlow when he was at Vanderbilt. While Barlow would be on the list we aren't sure that Barlow or Fair would be atop the board.

Finally, Rock Gullickson is expected in town next week. Paperwork for Gullickson is not signed yet which is why Tennessee has not released his hiring at this point. That paperwork should be done by Sunday or Monday.

“Having been around him I would say he's a good guy. He is very much by the book and is in one accord with the the head coach,” a former player who trained under Gullickson told Volquest Wednesday night.

Thanks Ron for the update. Appreciate it. I had forgotten about Canales. He would fill both needs, play calling experience and QB coach. Looks like we are still in the very early stages of the search. I hope CBJ explores all options and makes the hire that is the best "fit." Interesting that there are still no rumors on an OL coach.

Facts are these:

Butch brought in staff he was comfortable with from Cincinatti. He also brought in excellent recruiters from an Auburn program that had a recent national championship. This was needed to establish the culture he desired and to bring in an immediate influx of talent to the program. Mission accomplished. Now, with these things established, and player development being a weak point, he can look to improve on that end.

1. Bajakian: Had his ups and downs, but not terrible.
1b. Debord: Had his ups and downs, but maybe a bit better than Bajakian.
2. Mahoney: Probably underperformed, and will be replaced.
3. Jancek: Solid defense, multiple collapses.
3b. Shoop: Bruin disagrees, but most likely an upgrade, given time, his own staff hires, and D1 players. Possible Home run
4. Elder: Rising star. Rose on...
4b. Scott: Well respected. Recruiting boss. Upgrade.
5. Azzanni: Important recruiter. Has improved his coaching.
6. Strip: Good hire
7. Martinez: Great recruiter, players lacked fundamentals.
8. Thigpen: Great recruiters, players lacked fundamentals.
9. Gillespie: Homerun.

So what I am saying is this. Butch isn't as bad at staff hires as people are fretting over. The facts are, Debord put up points, and everyone has moments during a season that they are stuck. OSU vs Clemson, for example.

Mahoney, Thigpen, and Martinez, obviously the weak links are going to be replaced (most likely). Let the man do work.

So two of our "better" recruiters possibly to be replaced. 3 Star U may not recover!

Tried to bring some solid info-- not pushing a narrative at all. Why all the animus? Do you guys really enjoy the constant sniping and mean-spirited posts? Life's too short for that, but I'll leave you to it.

Don't always agree with you but like what you do bring. Don't sweat it.

Yes. Went from Blackburn to now a lot of conflicting stuff. It's just stupid over there. If I did not enjoy the time with my son and friends, I think I would tell them to stuff it.

A month ago I was told she was told that Blackburn was the hire and she needed to get behind it. She was to be heavily encouraged to rubber stamp the hire from heavy hitters of the power structure. Seems to me there is a break off from some of these players that are pushing her to become more involved and take a broader viewpoint. Not sure what Depitrio is doing. It is a mess for sure.

Nothing mean-spirited in my post (again just to be clear). I enjoy the various perspectives in this thread. This is the only thread I check regularly. Just voicing my preference for a sunnier disposition (SSVol). In the end, you may be right, but until that happens, I'm hoping for a less-negative outcome. Good thing about this thread is that on most every issue, we have an LA Vol on one side and an SSVol on the other, and most everyone else is in between. Then Bruin comes along and doubles down on a position way past anyone else and negavols and sunshine pumpers briefly join together - unified in their opposition to his nonsense. It's glorious.

You probably remember my post around that time. It was done. Same folks now not sure.

Not championing anything. Just pointing out how ridiculous it is to get torn up about hires that haven't even happened yet. But by all means, continue to overreact emotionally and allow situations to steal your peace.

I'm not even going to argue with you. You think everything is going to just work out hunky dory, and I don't. I am emotional about Volunteer football. I don't care what you think about my feelings on this.

Weinke is an outsider that would be a big time hire.
Canales is a small timer that's buds with Butch.

I've seen this movie before.

I never said it was going to work out well. I said that until somebody had actually been hired it doesn't make any sense to get torn up about it.

Lots of borrowed trouble up in these parts.

But according to guys like SS everything is just fine and dandy. I mean somebody that don't know crap about sports is wanting to prove she is the HBIC..what's the big deal with that?

I know you are a really good guy. I'm sorry for taking my frustration out on you. But this thing is beginning to have a hard, stony set to it. I hope it turns out well, but it will not IMO.

Weinke would be super interesting if he wants to stay at the college level.

That said, I'm 75% sure it is Scott, and Canales to QB coach, cause that's how Butch lifes

If it's between Scott and Z. I guess I will roll with you guys whose thoughts I respect that think Scott would be alright. I am never going to be on board with Z being OC. If it's Scott, at least we shouldn't regress in terms of play calling.

The CEO of GE knows nothing about building nuke plants, but that doesn't mean he is incapable of vetting and hiring the VP in charge of engineering. She doesn't need to know anything about athletics to hire the person that does.

I think that can be a very good combo.

The offense isn't broken. We see it can work.

We just need to be a little more creative and consistently better at getting our play makers the ball.

You are a smart guy. I'm not that smart, but I know college sports is nothing like a normal business. Emotional investment is at it's core. Nobody is a fanatic about widgets. People that do not understand that attachment, do not have any business sticking their nose in it. We want somebody that is not only competent to excellent, but we also want somebody that cares about Tennessee as much as we do. If not there will always be a disconnect between the supporters of UT sports, and the distanced administration. I'm not that good at putting my thoughts into words, but I hope you understand my consternation that UT is potentially/probably blowing the hire of a excellent candidate who has those qualities. That is infuriating to me.

If it was to be Scott as the OC I wouldn't have a problem with it, he's a well respected coach. Like I've said before the offensive philosophy isn't the problem, the situational play calling has.

Myself i do not want a fridge maker building a nuke plant! Or a nerd running the athletic department! Jmo
