Butch did well enough to set a scoring record with the pool guy. We lost games in large part because we had a DL consisting of one All American and and some figurines made of paper mâché and empty Muscle Milk bottles. Whether or not you believe Butch is a good coach, it isn't nearly as bad as it's painted.
Mark Helfrich played for the national championship. Is he a good coach? Two years later he went 4-8. What about now?
Brian Kelly played for the national championship. Is he a good coach? Four years later he went 4-8. So?
Gene Chizik won a national championship. Good coach, right? Two years later 3-9. OK.
Gus Malzahn played for the national championship the next year after Chizik went 3-9. Dude must be the awesomeness! Is down to 7-6 in two years. So how good is he really?
QB play was big in most, if not all, of those cases...maybe even bigger than the coach. The quality of Debord's game calling probably correlated very strongly to how well Dobbs did. How well Dobbs did probably correlated to how well the OL performed. So execution matters. A lot. Maybe even more than scheme or who's calling the plays. Our 3* RB made our 5* RB look bad. Did Debord suddenly figure out how to use a RB? Or might execution matter?
We hired a home run DC, who was unable to build a run stopping defense with the aforementioned Muscle Milk bottles. Clearly a loser.
Please allow Butch's OC hire to fail before assuming he will do so. I bet his hire, whoever it is, will look like a freaking genius if one of our QBs has a clue, or will look as woefully lost as our "can't miss" DC with the DB's who are apparently taught to ignore the oblong brown object. Because...you know...execution...
