CBJ saying the offense wasn't going to change much makes me think we don't get Helfrich. I just can't imagine a top OC in the country is going to work in someone else's system instead of bringing his own.

I think Kelly firing changed Helfrich thought process IMO. Therefore prob changed Butchs dominoes. Just a guess but that seems to be when some odds changed from people on Helfrich happenening. At same time Oregon system isn't much different from ours except it uses playmakers it open space better and normally goes faster but he slowed down some thisnyear.

What thread was LWS posting in? He has consistently said Blackburn for AD- did he now say something different? My lord why would Tennessee hire freaking Gilbert?! Just to give coaches basically what they want? Yeah that will end well. What are these idiots doing?

Latest I've seen on the ad from LWSVol:

I still believe it will be him but the geniuses that run the university believe it can be held off until the chancellor is on site full time, February

Would you try to bring in a new system in a year your job performance determines your future? Clawson called...

It's not that new. This isn't going from 4-3 to 3-4. it's fast spread to... fast spread. Concepts shouldn't be that different. And Butch shouldn't give up hiring big names to promote a Zach Azzani to keep the same system. I'd rather get a proven OC than one that doesn't have the experience.

Are you going to hand over your future to someone who hasn't done it before? I'm not.

I'm glad we are getting the Strength coach but we definitely need Blackburn, not the friend to Holly, butch and Rick Barnes.

No but he isnt going to change the systen this year. It will be an interesting search. I predict neither helfrich, scott or azzani.

Hubbs just said helfrich isn't a real option right now

I'm guessing it will be a total underwhelming hire. We'll see though, he hired Shoop. I suspect it will be one of those "I guess it could work" type of hire. Not one that one could get overly excited about but not one that makes you scratch your head either.

Of course it won't be Helfrich- we don't get nice things like that here. He obviously had conversations with Butch, but no deal. What is surprising is letting Debord walk without a replacement in place or close to being in place. That's what makes no sense here- he was going to retire, his family is at the bowl game, then all of the sudden he is OC at Indiana? While we seem to be starting from square one without the AD in place to boot. Only at Tennessee are things done like this!!! I am fully prepared for Azzani to just assume the role, Hubbs will start talking about that soon I'm sure.

Whoever they hire for OC please be an unpredictable playcaller.

All play callers are predictable. They have no more than 20-30 players they can practice enough to run effectively. Neyland had only about ten player he would run. The key is calling the correct play needed for the down and distant situation couple with the flow of the game. Most play callers call plays to set up other plays which are more likely to be successful. The other factor is the defense you are playing. Some plays just do not work against some defenses. Then is when the QB or OC have to change plays at the line of scrimmage. This becomes easier as the QB gains experience. Listen to Ainge on the Butch Jones show. He explains how the reads are made and which play to change to depending on the defense. The offense is much more than being unpredictable.

Even with JRM healthy, he never used a star.

The question is whether he was trying to keep things similar to Jancek for the sake of continuity or whether he just doesn't plan on using on here period

IMO, I have a hard time believing that Shoop would come to UT and not use what he calls his bread and butter. He mentioned adapting to Janceks terminology to smooth the transition, but not the style of play. I think it was more dependent on personnel on why we didn't see it as much this year.

Is Mike Yurcich, the OK State, OC a possibility? I think he would be perfect, plus he knows how to develop QBs. Also, he ran a two QB system and that might be just the thing for us next year. Using Dormady and JG in a duel attack would be incredible IMO.

Good point that I agree with for most part. My only issue with scheme has been lack of use of the entire field and lack of space for playmakers to operate. It got better this year on some occasions. I guess that could also be people running wrong routes at times too making it more crowded than designed and the play call as well

That and I get that they're dedicated to the their system and all, but not having a short yardage package under center to run sneaks with or let Hurd run downhill from was beyond stupid IMO.

You don't need have to commit THAT much time to prepare your guys for it and it's good to have in your back pocket just in case.

The bottom line is that none of our current coaches in marquee sports are having so much success that they should dictate an AD hire.

If the "powers that be" ran Hart off just to hire his protege, it makes me question how they ever had enough acumen to become the powers that be in the first place.

I've never considered stopping financial support for my alma mater or advocating a boycott of UT sports, but I'm not sure how to get the administration's attention in any other meaningful way.

Sports aren't everything, but I want my university to be a winner again. And whether they like it or not, winning athletics is good for the school and the community.

When you execute with superior talent it doesn't matter if the QB shouts out the play to the defense. It will generally work.

I'm fine with that tbh. If it's Azzani, I'll be checked out for a year and we will be looking for a new head coach.

If that's the way the situation ends up, I may need to check out for a few years. With all things considered, if CBJ has a bad year that leads to his termination, I suspect recruiting will drop further and the next coach will be rebuilding again.

How quickly this board forgets. This board was so high on the Debord hire for a few years as it would be a great grooming time for CZA to learn from the veteran. Now that has happened, with a hell of a lot of success, not one poster wants to own up to that plan.

If I remember correctly, most of the board wanted to throw Z in the TN river and thought the hiring or a pool cleaning specialist that hadn't coached in years was a horrible idea.
