Yeah, very true. JRM would have been great in that role, IMO. Once he went down midseason that really threw a wrench in things. Probably a lot to do with why we didn't see it much.

Even with JRM healthy, he never used a star.

The question is whether he was trying to keep things similar to Jancek for the sake of continuity or whether he just doesn't plan on using on here period

CBJ said today that he wasn't looking to change the offense. He said he has been pleased with the offense and stressed that the new OC would continue running it with minor "enhancements."

The hires outside his network have been on D. He made it clear that he doesn't think we need many improvements or adjustments on offense and isn't looking to shake things up.

I read it more as him saying a complete overhaul to a different style of offense wasn't likely.

Either way reading into things Butch says is futile because all that ever comes out of his mouth is beep boop resilient beep boop outstanding effort beep boop bulls*** bulls*** bulls***

Edit: also, Scott was outside of his network. That's why I said last two hires.

I like Kelly where he is. I think he lacks anticipation in the running game and he's not a hard hitter. If you could clone a mix of Kelly and Warrior, I think you'd have the perfect person to play the star position.

Kelly can hit not a consistent hitter but he can actually hit.

He blasted the RB in the Va.Tech game to force a fumble.

Florida game he was bringing it too.
That's what makes his inconsistency tackling so frustrating. Kid can lay the wood when he puts his mind to it.

But sometimes he has plays that make you wonder how mic he really likes to hit

The offensive philosophy hasn't been the problem, it's the situational play calling that's been the issue IMO

That's been my stance as well.

I was hoping Debord would stay on and we'd bring in someone new to work with the QBs and maybe call plays.

I think the OK ST OC is my favorite fit of the bunch listed. OK ST offense is similar to what Butch wants in that run game is heavily emphasized yet pass game is explosive as well. He also did work with two QB system last year and then did good with just Mason hisnyear. we may need a two QB system like that this year.

I was all about Helfrich and still am but I think kelly firing changes things there. If a college coach goes pro then Kelly is top target for any search and will be top guy next year.

This is an excellent post. If Kelly did get a job I would imagine that Mark would follow him right after. Then we'd be searching for another offensive Coordinator just 12 months later.

Isn't Helfrich's offense pretty similar? Wouldn't it be possible hiring him would just add "enhancements"?

The legend of the qb coach continues to grow. This place acts like we didn't just have a Qb that put up huge numbers. This is an example of if you say something enough times many will start to believe it.

It''s more than the numbers. Every position should have a position coach ESPECIALLY the most important position on the field. 1. For recruiting and 2. For developing. A position coach at that position is imperative. I have played the position before, at a lower level of course, but a QB coach is the person you spend all of your time with. And that person should be consistent

In addition to all of these hirings, most college coaches are expecting the NCAA to imcrease the number of assistant coaches by one. That's 128 new job openings in the summer. The coschimg carousel is going to be crazy this year.Do you guys think we add a new coach on O or D.

CBJ isn't going to go out on a limb with the OC hire. He wants someone to run his offense, not make sweeping changes. What he really wants is someone he trusts to work with a young QB within the offense we already run. A lot of the names people are throwing around aren't going to be up for this. They'll want to tinker and put their stamp on the offensive scheme and CBJ isn't going to allow that.

We have never needed an AD more.

...yea sounds about right.

Agreed. Debord did a fabulous job his two years with Dobbs as QB coach.

What thread was LWS posting in? He has consistently said Blackburn for AD- did he now say something different? My lord why would Tennessee hire freaking Gilbert?! Just to give coaches basically what they want? Yeah that will end well. What are these idiots doing?

Good point that I agree with for most part. My only issue with scheme has been lack of use of the entire field and lack of space for playmakers to operate. It got better this year on some occasions. I guess that could also be people running wrong routes at times too making it more crowded than designed and the play call as well

CBJ saying the offense wasn't going to change much makes me think we don't get Helfrich. I just can't imagine a top OC in the country is going to work in someone else's system instead of bringing his own.
