If Butch Jones somehow hired Chip Kelly to be the OC Vol fans would be out of their minds with optimism. I vote, YES!

(until the first loss, then he fahrd!).

Chip Kelly for oc.... now here me out chip's biggest problem was he couldn't beat physical teams we all know the sec is a physical los league, so chip can come to Tennessee and use his time as coordinator to make adjustments to his scheme, and be more successful

Not me. I watched the power struggle at Philly and would worry we would have the same thing happen here. CCK is always, in his mind, the most intelligent person in the room. He and CBJ would clash constantly and that would hurt worse than anything.

First...

Thank you to Mike DeBord. Regardless of what some may think, you did a fine job as OC at TN (IMO).

I don't see the moving to OC at IN as a "Wow" or "this is a bad look for TN" thing. DeBord was going to retire and move to IN. The bowl game was his last at TN regardless. Instead of retiring, he is able to collect a paycheck a little longer and be closer to his kids and grand kids. I think it's awesome that he is getting to do it. My guess is that it's only for a year or two anyway.

As for his replacement...either get a known commodity from the college football ranks with OC experience or look to the NFL for a young gun (QB coach) who is coming up the ranks. I do not think hiring a college coach with no OC experience would be a good move.

All JMO of course.

We have a great chance to upgrade at OC.

I wasn't a huge Debord hater or anything. I've tried to stay positive about him. But his game plans against South Carolina, App State and Bama were straight up wretched.

We need more innovation and adaptability from that role.

That being said, he called some great games along the way. But not enough explosion with the weapons he had. He never really figured out how to use Kamara consistently. Besides just throwing him endless swing passes. He rarely got him into space. So many of his yards came after making the first guy miss. He is gonna ball out at the next level.

What happened to all the short passes over the middle from the A&M game?

I'm excited about a change here. Hopefully the hire is good. Helfrich makes a ton of sense but I'm open to other options.

But if it's Azzani I'm gonna be real sad.

No way Butch hires Chip Kelly to be his OC.

Butch would be upstaged day one, personalities would clash, Kelly hates recruiting, and he would be a guaranteed one and done.

Potential program changing hires at OC (for polar opposite reasons):

Chip Kelly
Zack Azzani

One of my favorite things every off season is Hubbs acting like he doesn't know something everyone knows he knows. Helfrich is the guy. That list he just put out is comical.

I agree on all points, good post. And you're right on a replacement, known commodity from CFB or young QB coach in NFL. I can't imagine Butch let Debord go to give someone their first bigtime OC job, not happening. I'm also betting he already has his guy and it'll be public in a few days.

100%. As soon as Butch wants us to know who the hire is he'll tell Hubbs to go ahead and leak it. I'm guessing Thursday or Friday.

So if this is done, or close to done, and the new OC is widely acclaimed, does this breathe life into Gilberts AD candidacy?

Lol exactly.

Its seems there are plenty of candidates that Jones is going to look into. The most recent names are

Chris Angel - who can make object that's are in the way disappear and has a play book full of tricks. Same agent as Fulmer

Cleveland Browns fan that always has paper bag over his head - he knows what not to do and Jones prefers perfection so that's a good step toward that.

Lars Fluckenthauer- QB coach of the West Munich rec league.

Others to consider but unlikely: Mark Helfrich, Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, ok st OC, Mark Helfrich.
