So CBJ, Barnes and Warlick want Gilbert. CBJ can do what he wants,Barnes can run b-ball and Warlick keeps her job... depressing

I'm not saying it's a good thing by any means bc I believe in accountability, but if we are honest, can you really blame them. I would love to hold a position where I'm allowed to run things the way I want. Very few people on this earth enjoy being told what to do. Again, before I am blasted, I do believe a quality AD needs to be hired and I'm on the DB train...But I can't say I blame the "Big 3" for favoring a candidate that lets them be the captain of their own ships.

Of course you can't blame them. They are human and they want security.

But an organization that allows employees to pick their boss, you certainly can blame.

I thought Griffin was the best safety on Friday and he only played one series. Blew up a back out of the back field on a play action pass and then came up big in run support. He's better than TKjr if given playing time IMO.

Honestly at this point I'm not sure Kelly brings anything to the table that other players don't (besides experience obviously). Our other Safeties are more athletic.

If he moved to OLB, he'd be one of our more athletic OLBs, but his physicality has been hit or miss throughout his career at safety. No telling whether that would be a good move for him or not.

CBJ isn't going to go out on a limb with the OC hire. He wants someone to run his offense, not make sweeping changes. What he really wants is someone he trusts to work with a young QB within the offense we already run. A lot of the names people are throwing around aren't going to be up for this. They'll want to tinker and put their stamp on the offensive scheme and CBJ isn't going to allow that.

We have never needed an AD more.

Then Butch will sign his own death warrant. He really is a tone deaf idiot if he makes a garbage hire. IMO Azz and Scott either one would be a garbage hire.

We will never know but we all know that this OC hire doesn't have one year to figure it out.

If a decent portion of his starters stay healthy he does. And the performance would warrant such.

I think you're right on that. He just doesn't seem to have the top end speed and athleticism to be an X-factor at safety. He does however have the speed for OLB. It was a good move for JRM when he switched, maybe it will be for TKjr as well.

He could also go back to the CMU coaching tree and talk to someone like Matt LaFleur, especially since he has stressed the need for someone who develops QBs. It wouldn't be surprising if he promotes Scott or Z to Co-OC, though.

What he's not going to do, IMO, is take a big risk on hiring someone who wants to come in and make a lot of changes or expects too much control.

We don't know if this is the case or not yet. That's what he did last OC hire, but his two most recent hires have been outside of his network.

I'm hoping that going into auch a vital year he's thinking he needs to bring in someone who can truly improve the offense.

If he brings someone like Helfrich in it wouldn't be surprising to see Azzanni maybe jump at an OC opportunity elsewhere. Which IMO wouldn't be a terrible thing. We saw in 2016 that bringing in an OC and not giving him the option of bringing in a few guys of his own choosing can lead to some problems.

JRM was always an OLB though. Coaches gave him a shot at safety as a freshman and it became clear he was wasn't a great fit there.

I'm just not sure who TK passes up for PT if they slide him down? Should we really expect him to be better than McDowell and Sapp? I'm not sure he's that much bigger or more athletic than Berry. What we pile he bring that those guys don't?

I think the OK ST OC is my favorite fit of the bunch listed. OK ST offense is similar to what Butch wants in that run game is heavily emphasized yet pass game is explosive as well. He also did work with two QB system last year and then did good with just Mason hisnyear. we may need a two QB system like that this year.

I was all about Helfrich and still am but I think kelly firing changes things there. If a college coach goes pro then Kelly is top target for any search and will be top guy next year.

No way to tell until the hire is made though

LaFleur would have to want to be in college because Kyle will take him with him to his HC job this year. Likely the broncos

You wouldn't necessarily have to start him over either of them. He wouldn't play the true OLB position but rather the "star" position as Shoop likes to call it. That position is a hybrid role of strong safety/linebacker. It allows the "star" LB to be able to play both in the box against the run and play in coverage on a third receiver if needed. So you could start Kirkland, TK and either McDowell/Sapp/etc.

We haven't seen Shoop use a Star LB once since he got to Knoxville though.

If he goes back to using one, Kelly would probably be a great candidate.

Yeah, very true. JRM would have been great in that role, IMO. Once he went down midseason that really threw a wrench in things. Probably a lot to do with why we didn't see it much.

CBJ said today that he wasn't looking to change the offense. He said he has been pleased with the offense and stressed that the new OC would continue running it with minor "enhancements."

The hires outside his network have been on D. He made it clear that he doesn't think we need many improvements or adjustments on offense and isn't looking to shake things up.

I like Kelly where he is. I think he lacks anticipation in the running game and he's not a hard hitter. If you could clone a mix of Kelly and Warrior, I think you'd have the perfect person to play the star position.

Yeah, IDT it's at all realistic and I can't see him choosing CFB; just that he has that CMU connection that CBJ has turned to again and again.
