Based on Butch being Butch the common denominator on potential OC's is being from Michigan and CMU, which is Matt LaFleur. They were on staff together at CMU in 2004.
Does LaFleur have play calling experience? It's important that the OC brings both play calling and QB coaching experience.

Wish we were hearing more rumors about a OL coach.

I mean that's cool but you just choose to point out how inconsistent they are when they are clearly overachieving.

I mean I know you're not an idiot but I imagine you post with a buck knife to your wrist.

They can be overachieving and inconsistent imo. I'm happy with Barnes! Just gotta recruit a bit better

I expect CBJ to send up a trial balloon via Hubbs before the end of the week to gauge things. I think we'll know very soon who he is looking to hire.

right now its an unknown who would be ditching who. maybe after face to face the last week CBJ decides he doesn't fit.

CBJ has been vetting Helfrich for a month or so. If something doesn't come down in the next 48 hours I would say they have determined to not pursue, they being both.

the position is open that needed to open to make Helfrich OC/QB coach. shouldn't take long to announce if he is going to be the guy

In general, I'm feeling energized by this coaching search. Change was needed and no matter what we're going to get a fresh new voice with different ideas calling games next year.

My main problem with Debord, and this may prove to be a Butch thing more than anything else, was his stubbornness in his play calling. He was so determined to run the plays as he saw fit, regardless of what the defense seemed to show.

We just weren't a very balanced offense. Especially early in the season with Hurd. Every team we played knew we wanted to establish the running game with him and they sold out to stop it and we played right into their hands. Debord didn't seem to have a great feel for when to take shots or run something unexpected. Play calling pretty much always went about how you thought it would. It never seemed to give us much of an edge in my opinion. Defenses were rarely on their toes unless they were outmatched athletically. (It happened a couple times... Fla & A&M come to mind).

I want a play caller that will attack a defenses weaknesses. Make them pay for their #1 cornerback getting knocked out of the game for a couple plays. I want a play caller that understands his own tendencies... and understand that his opponents at this level will all likely understand his tendencies as well. And make them regret ever trying to predict what we were gonna do.

We so rarely made teams pay. Most of our points came as a result of outstanding individual efforts.

This may sound kind of nitpicky. But I think it was similar to Butch realizing that he had to part with Jancek after last year. We werent bad on defense. But we weren't playing at a championship level and that has to be the goal here. Even though Shoop didn't succeed in 2016 I still think it was the right decision to make at the time.

Let's all shoot for the moon together and win a damn championship.

Yeah, it's not like CBJ hasn't floated at least one trial balloon around the OC position already.

Not really. Current Falcons QB coach. Has been both the Redskins and Notre Dame's QB coach.

Helfrich could also have some pretty killer recruiting ties out on the west coast that could open up some hot territory for us potentially.

Just thoughts

What is this context? Is he saying Helfrich is pretty much not the guy?

Sorry. I'm not proficient in mobile. Dougie_D in FF was ranting about Helfrich trolling Butch and saying he would come but holding off to see if Chip Kelly was hired to jump ship lastinute and go with him. LWS was saying that everything is in place for what Butch has been pushing for but that anything is possible. After his face to face with Helfrich at practice, Butch could've decided it wasn't a fit. He felt if it was going g to happen then it would by the weekend.

"Two weeks ago, I was pretty certain on Helfrich. Even more so after he met with Butch over the weekend.

Now? I think Helfrich takes his buyout money and he and Chip get the band back together somewhere on the west coast next year. There are a couple of Pac12 schools that would make a lot of sense for that combo after next year.

That is, if the NCAA lets Kelly back in the college game. Remember, he never was sanctioned because he went to the Eagles. There is a strong feeling in the coaching community that he would face NCAA penalties if he tried to take a college job.

The bottom line with Helfrich is that he doesn't need a job because he's getting paid for the forseeable future by Oregon. He's a west coast guy that hasn't ever recruited at a high level. I like his playcalling to a certain extent, but I don't view him as the same can't-miss hire that many here think he would be. He would be fine, but I think he's a better "fit" out west and I think he's realizing that."
