Finebaum Talking About OC Search

Time of possession is the most overrated stat.

Ask any defense what they think of that statement.

Ever played hot hands with a ringer who just kept slapping the fire out of your hands? They're the offense.

I think all y'all expecting us to hire Helfrich are setting yourselves up for disappointment. If he's not hired here, then everyone is gonna keep b*tching and moaning about how Butch screwed it up, because he didn't hire who the fans wanted. If he does, great, and I hope it happens. But one thing I've learned as a Vol fan is the higher you set your own bar for what you think is appropriate, and then that mark isn't met, it's a longer way to the bottom. I'm just gonna sit back and hope for the best. Not much more I can do as a fan anyway.

Thank you! Everybody here just looks at our point total and just assumes that we were lights out on offense. That wasn't always the case. We had trouble scoring against App St, SC, and Ohio... We scored 3 points in the 2nd half of the Vandy game. Good defensive coaches shut our offense down with ease.

I'm certainly not disputing moments that we lacked execution and/or creativity. Some of what you say is truly valid. However, if your mindset as a coach is to stay "ahead of the chains" you will not take the top off of the defense very often. Statistically it has a low success rate and invariably puts you behind the chains. It's just not in the plan for what Butch does. To the original point however it seems to be effective based upon scoring. Even if it does feel that the offense is bogged down at times.

In the 2nd half of the Vandy game we had drives that ended with: missed fg, fumble at midfield, turnover on downs when time was running out. The defense lost that game by giving up 600+ yards

Time of possession is the most overrated stat.

As long as the offense is scoring TDs each possession TOP isn't that big of a deal, but as soon as the offense goes a quick 3 and out that sends the defense back to the field on little rest.

When we punted Nebraska deep in Nashville I had flashbacks to the Orange Bowl when they had two backbreaking drives of over 95 yards each. They never quit and we didn't stop scoring.

Just keep scoring and the defense will be fine.

34 points should have been enough to beat Vandy. Giving up 45 to them, hiw did out defense shut down Florida in the second half and then give the game away to Vandy?

Yes. Disappointing... Butch basically said he won't be relinquishing any of his offense. It looks like more 3 & outs and no downfield passing game.

Did you watch any games. We passed down field a lot. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

OK> How about Peyton Manning!!!! He's not doing anything but making commercials for Papa John's.

Griffith: "he's already said the offense will not change."

Of course it won't. And one could strongly argue it shouldn't given 36 ppg in 2016. But make no mistake, whoever comes in will coordinate the offense and playcall exactly how Jones wants him to coordinate and playcall, same as Bajakian and Debord.

I just heard that too. Very disappointing...

There is nothing wrong with the system. The plays are fine. The timing and repetitiveness of the play calling was the main issue IMO. We had the most predictable offense I have ever witnessed (at least when Hurd was playing). Might as well have started on 2nd down every drive.

Also the habitual throwing short of the sticks on 3rd downs was nothing short of maddening

I hope I'm wrong, but that's just what I feel after reading and hearing what I have today.

If it happens then Butch must be trying to get fired. I don't expect him to hire anybody he has to give some control to.
