I don't think Helfrich suffers from an overpowering ego, but to drop from former P5 and playoff title game HC to simply a QB coach is a little too steep. Gotta dangle more resume building responsibility and a decent title to lure him to a different situation. The national perspective of Butch is that this is going to be a pivotal year. If he's a big factor in improving Tennessee, he's going to want a piece of the credit and conversely he'd want to have a bigger hand in ensuring that he's not a one year position coach. I've been an advocate for DeBord being judged on his performance...not the fan fiction that he was a geezer hired away from the community pool. From his two years, I've observed his strengths as play design and aligning the OL with the RBs. Any weaknesses stem from the occasional rut on playcall tendencies. DeBord fully replacing Mahoney and implementing the gameplan with Scott transitioning in OL duties whilst Helfrich adds a fresh approach in gameday playcalling, seems to be what Butch needs in changing the status quo. This allows him to afford proper respect to DeBord but also move forward. Only sticking point is his willingness to jettison his most loyal assistant in Mahoney.
