Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

I wouldn't think he'd step down to position coach. Maybe with an assistant HC title.

To Butch's credit, when he's made recent staff changes he's gone after some of the absolute best coaches available.

we shall see.

Helfrich was there because he had planned to see Mariota play this weekend. But Mariota broke his leg. He was just dropping by. Move along nothing to see here. He doesn't even have any land in Bucksnort...

Not so fast my friend...

He could have gone to Nebraska's practice, no?

I just don't know that Helfrich is an upgrade. There is a lot to be said for keeping the devil you know. I thought debord was pretty good after hurd left, and we know nothing about how helfrich will deal with sec defenses. If you're forced to make a change, then do it- but I'd let things keep rolling.

I agree with keeping MD as OC, but it has been said in some quarters that he is contemplating retirement. If he does, then Helfrich would be a good replacement IMO.

I understand your concerns, but that's why it would be effective to move DeBord to OL with a Co-Oc title. Then Helfrich would be QB and Co-Oc. DeBord would be able to still have influence and help Helfrich feel around SEC defenses if needed, but Helfrich could put his twist on our offense and help our QBs develop tremendously. He has a long, proven track record of developing QBs every where he has been. Also, Chip Kelly raved about how smart Helfrich was and how he was an amazing teacher.

It'd be a great addition to our staff with another high football IQ guy. I think it'd be nice to have Helfrich's fresh views and ideas put into our offensive scheme, and again where Helfrich would be a homerun hire would not only be his OC abilities, but the fact that he can develop our QBs.

I hope it happens, but I want Martinez replaced immediately. Come home Terry Fair!

DeBord is probably retiring.

And Saban said Dooley would make a good HC lol

I think the biggest part of handling SEC defenses is having real SEC players on offense. As long as we got the horses, any capable guy should be able to steer them.

I'm thinking Helfrich is going to be QB coach and that DeBord remains as the OC and coaches OL..

This right here would be the freaking amazing on several levels. With this you wouldn't have to hire another OL coach, I am going to assume that Mahoney is gone regardless and would eliminate the need for that hire. Also if DeBo is thinking of retiring in the next couple of seasons this will give some time for Helfrich to get in, start working with the guys get them used to his lingo then when DeBo retires he steps right in as OC. Wow I hope this happens

I can not see him taking just a QB coach position, unless one of two things imo.

1. He is QB coach for this one year then Debord retires

2. He Co O.C. with Debord and QB coach for one year then Debord retires

I just do not think Debord wants to do this long term imo.

I would say option 1 is more like it if he doesn't have a huge ego and dosent have to be the main man. You never know after the pressure and being let go as a HC he may not mind taking a step back in responsibility for a little bit and what's cool he probably won't be too much worried about a big contract either. Dude is about to be flat out getting paid from his buyout regardless.

Like Urban Meyer said, its going to take all 9 starting units performing to compete for championships. An offense is only as good as its line in the SEC. We can get the best OC in the land, but if we don't have a decent Oline, it's pointless.

That being said, I would like to see our playmakers in space more next year. Byrd and Jennings in particular. Debord did it some this year with Kamara, but not enough.

I believe that Scott will help out with the OL as well, unless he leaves for a coordinator or head position.

I wholeheartedly agree. The only teams that have beaten Saban the last several years have done so by having a dynamic QB, and a Helfrich/Guarantano combination might just fit the bill. As for Martinez, I think he has been the weak link on this coaching staff since they arrived. Our DB's have consistently tackled poorly, been out of position, and covered horribly under Martinez.

Mike is only 60 and still really energized.

Helfrich is collecting around 12 million from Oregon and could easily be interested in taking a position job for less money while deciding a direction to go in the future. He might learn to like Knoxville and want to stay longer term or head back out West.

Not anything I've been told. speculating based on bits and pieces of hearing things

I can't see going from HC to a QB coach, regardless of how much he is being paid.

What good is Helfrich as a QB coach for one year? You hire him as OC or you dont hire him at all.
