I've been in sales for 40 yrs. I can tell you sales and recruiting are very similar.
1) you never sell anyone when you're not confident in yourself, your product.
2) if CBJ is this insecure, it won't change during the offseason. That is much deeper than a loss to Vandy. How has this not been uncovered before?
3) easy to find negativity in Knoxville starting week of Bama game. Never improved.
4) Firmly beleive it was to be the "final nail" after TS committed to Bama, O$U, etc.
5) Haney was let go by ESPN. Probably gets his job back now
6) no question this team and program will have intense pressure on it in 2017.
Also, without the name of the source, Butch Jones and Dave Hart have no way to even verify that those quotes were ever even made. They could have been taken out of context, misquoted or even been completely fabricated. There is no way to know under the veil of anonymity. Haney used statements that are alleged to have been made. That is all.
...and Haney is not reputable 'by all accounts'... That's BS.
No, we're just passionate fans that expect more from this staff, team and program. We deserve better, even you Mr. Self Righteous! Why do you think we are all crying?? Did you not watch this season unfold then read this article. Do something productive and grow a pair dude.
The "truth" attributed to unnamed sources. Daniel Hood consistently offered a differing opinion:
"'Certain guys had more of a voice than they deserve,' a source close to the team said. 'Certain guys would become team captains even though they didnt earn it. When that happens, it dissolves trust the rest of the team has in you.'
A few former players and the media relations office refuted these claims.
'I dont see any scenario where I believe there would be that type of favoritism. I just cant see that,' said Hood, who played for Jones in his first season, 2013. 'I love the guy. I could say hands down that of every single coach I played for, that was the one staff that really got it from the top down.'"
'The culture is a disaster:' Jones, Vols trending the wrong way
Here's another smear piece.. someone has an agenda
edit: realized it's the same article
the coaches you mentioned in #2 have something that CBJ doesn't...credibility. when you're winning conf titles and national titles, you can get away with it. CBJ can't.
the media bashing UT has taken is a direct result of how CBJ portrays himself when in front of the media and fans. he's his own worst enemy in this regard.
the title of it being a "disaster" is probably overblown, and hte article has a narrative that it follows w/out question. but there's no real doubt that the culture took a punch to the gut this year.
My point is that why would one jump to the conclusion that the quotes are fabricated?
If you are going to make accusations that the writer is not reputable, you should present evidence.
It's perfectly reasonable to assume an experienced sports writer is doing his job unless there is evidence to the contrary.
Getting a story wrong is one thing, but fabricating a story is another. If he did fabricate this story, he would very easily lose a libel case against him.
Inside the failing of Tennessee Volunteers football under Butch Jones
Pretty reputable guy in Travis Haney talking up the "truths." Not good publicity to a national audience.
I am NOT in the "fire Butch" camp, but this article confirmed the suspicions I had about the problems in the program. I thought it was an outstanding article. This season was a disaster on many levels from a coaching standpoint, and it was right there for all of us to see. You can't blame the author because he won't put lipstick on a pig.
Butch better start coaching these players again, instead of coddling and enabling them, or this is going to continue downhill at an even faster rate.
Article is pretty much dead on
I remember when Helm, Hendricks, cb from DC, Wr from Maryland I think, left. Some said Butch was too hard on them. As much as we want to blame someone else for people's personal life choices, We shouldn't do that. Hurd chose to be the type of person that he is too. So did O'Brien and Preston Williams. They're the ones who chose to quit, smoke weed, be selfish and give up. It's obvious to me that those few dont define the other 70 something players who haven't. My point is that it's not the coaches fault or the teams fault.
Clearly the players were not focused on ball security, that falls on coaching when it's this prevalent.
Did Alabama lose their staying running back? Maybe Hurd was a flake, maybe he was telling the truth about Butch lying to him. Either way, it doesn't look good.
The champions of life thing was bad. It doesn't matter how he meant it. He said it and the entire sports world clowned him for it. Even if he meant it the way he says he did, it is not flattering to say at that point. He had to know better. If he doesn't, that's squarely on his shoulders. Perception becomes reality.
Vandy and south Carolina are inexcusable. USC coming off a bye and Vandy when playing for the sugar bowl. That's fire worthy at any big time school.
I think it's foolish to say a bad year next year would be the "start" of the decline. The red flags from this year are hard to ignore.
I see your points, but I just feel differently.
Agree so recent recruiting seems to conflict with this.
I doubt seriously he is insecure as a person. I could see him feeling somewhat beat up by the noise - if he pays attention to it and lets it get to him. I could see him being disappointed in the loss to Vandy and the season. I could see him scratching his head thinking WTH - I mean Shoop was supposedly a home run hire but looks anything but that.
Constant negativity toward someone = bullying and if a person listens it can get to them. I believe like you that this article was planned and this was suppose to be day 2 of a bad week for Coach Jones and give those that need a reason - a reason.
And I hope this team and their coach responds with a spectacular season. And then if he walks ... and tells those in his back pocket where to go ... they will dang sure deserve it.
