Bye bye Butch - Purdue bound (message board rumor)

That's point. franklin let shoop do his own thing. Franklin micro manages offense to much. Seems he is more free now though.

Most coaches to a point micro manage on the side of the ball that they have served as Coordinator. Yet very few coaches can succeed doing this unless they are the very best at what they do (ie. Saban & Belichick).

The best coaches know they must trust their coordinators and they focus on time management & game decisions (ie. when to punt vs go for it & special teams- onside kick, punt block vs punt return, when to go for 2).

Could it be CBJ struggles with time management & game decisions because he is distracted by being too involved with the offense?

When u teach someone you can't throw everything at them at once. The assistants have to teach new techniques, new angles, no positions. All this in 7-8 months all while you been doing something complete opposite for many years

Would it also make it hard for older players to bring along the young guys since they all are learning?

Makes sense. Butch would be the obvious choice to continue the long tradition of gridiron disappointment that is the hallmark of Purdue Football.

Plus, "Boilermaker" and "Bricklayer". It almost rhymes.

Not to mention the new words and catch phrases that the Purdue faithful would learn. And hear...over, and over, and over, and over again.

Clearly, this was meant to be.

Go Vols.

Lol im guess this is space station blue font?

So...Butch actually came to UT from the Big East after he was in the MAC. So many of you seem to ignore that. His best record there was 9-3, which we almost achieved this year, and we hired him anyway.

His last year in the MAC he was 11-2 including the bowl game, which was actually also achievable this year.

Bringing up MAC constantly is completely irrelevant. Urban Meyer used to coach in the MAC also. :eek:lol:

Lol it's as if some of you have real hate for the guy. That's very strange to me.

So coaching football must be different than what happens with other jobs. Most who make lateral moves don't get to take their own folks with them and are required to succeed even when working with new bosses, peers and direct reports.

Bottom line he took the job knowing full well his folks were not coming with him and that he was going to have to work with new assistants. If he wasn't comfortable with that he should have said "no" to the job.

It's a team. Everyone has to work as one in sports. Everyone. Everyone has to agree. Everyone has to see eye to eye. Everyone must get along. It's drastically different than business.

I can't explain it. When you have new coaches around it takes time to learn their personality and their terminology. If you been there it's like learning a new golf swing, it will take a solid year to be able to control it.

You think Schoop and Helfrich would like working for Jon Gruden?

I know what you mean. For example they're having to think much more on the field because of the new system. Next year after the foundation is laid they will play faster while also helping the new guys learn faster. Everyone is having to learn the same things now but next year will be different. I understand what you mean by *team*. Btw thanks for the response. You are helping and I'm glad that you care enough to talk with us.

TS - besides Shoop, what other assistants we have now are you and the players high on? RG is one who comes to mind. Thanks.

Football is multicultural school . That's why you hear the term football smarts. It is a different language, and each coach has their own language.

with Debords retirement forthcoming and former Perdue grad and offensive guru Gary Danielson out of a job... the pieces are beginning to fall into place.

That makes sense. I imagine it's takes awhile to change it and learn another language(Shoop/defense).

Yes you have to break habits your use to. If I was butch, I would go after Casey clausen as qb coach/assistant OC. Bring shoops assistants on board, and we will have a top tier coaching staff.

Jon gruden can get anyone he wants, people would line out the door to coach with him

Well hopefully UT will act like the power they are and quit small balling the football coach hires. Spend big money and get it right.

My understanding is that in addition to what you posted Shoop also had to keep Jancek's terminology, much the way Debord had to do so the players would have it easier...maybe I'm off base on that, I'm sure I'll be corrected if so. :p

That's exactly what I read back a few months ago after spring practice.

I think it's safe to say that the experiment did NOT work on defense.
