You said they don't let it fester. That festered for a while

I guess our definitions of terrible are different. He went 12-2 and 7-1 in the SEC in 2012. He went 8-5 in 2013 like we are doing this year. He went 10-3 and 6-2 in the SEC in 2014. He went back to 8-5 and got canned.

Most on here said 10-2 and a good bowl would have been great for UT, which is what Richt did the year before he got fired.

If I remember it was recruiting violations. Maybe had something to do with the recruitment of Lache Seastrunk.

Pretty sure there was $ paid to a recruiting service that was against the NCAA rules. It might have been too much money spent

This Butch leaving on his own thing is extremely intriguing to me right now. I doubt he does it but he would probably be happier if he did. He's in for a rough, rough offseason. Then he opens with a tough game vs GT and has Florida in Gainesville to kick off conference play.

Head coach: Mullen
Defensive coordinator: Strong
Offensive coordinator: Tony Franklin

All realistic options if Butch left on his own and we ponied up the cash.

I think that's about as "monster" of a coaching staff as we could afford/feasibly get right now. Would win a boatload of SEC games. Mullen and Strong worked together at Florida and won national championships there.

Mullen and Franklin would turn JG into a beast.
Doesn't matter who the OC is in that scenario, Mullen would have his finger prints all over it. Would be a pretty solid start to a staff.

Honestly though, CFB is fickle and so are we as fans. Just a few months ago Shoop was viewed as a top 5 DC in the country. We see how that is working out. A year ago Sumlin and Malzahn were all but gone. Look at all of the coaches we viewed as great up and comers, or dead men walking, and where they are now. Sometimes the fans, and media, are tremendously wrong.

I'm not disagreeing with beliveing CBJ may not be "the guy", but look at how confident we, as a forum, were that he was, and that no matter what this team would fight tooth and nail, every single game, would be disciplined and never beat themselves. It's like everything that was great about CBJ and what he instilled in his players did a complete 180. Why? Now we find a million things to criticize him about.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

I hope whoever the coach and staff is in 2017 has their heads on straight and does a phenomenal job for the program we love.

If Fulmer and Peyton are part of a committee to find someone. If we miss on 1-2 big fish your going to see Tee Martin and Jim Bob Cooter come up a whole whole lot. Both of them know each well and both are very established coaches.

Pray. Hard.

When I start to slip back into giving Butch just continued loyalty and support I think about other major programs. Would Florida or Bama or USC or Notre Dame, Ohio State etc settle for what we have seen? No they would not. We shouldn't either. I know some fans find this hard to believe but I'll say it again. Its ok to thank Jones for rebuilding and still recognize he's reached his ceiling and needs to go. That being said, I don't think he goes anywhere. Is what it is at the moment.

Neither are head coaches. We can do better. We'll be right where UGA is right now with a coordinator hire letting someone learn on the job while we sit back and hope he works out.

None of those programs would fire Jones at this point.

We better hope Jones figures it out or next year at this time the program may very well be where it was 4 years ago when Jones took over. Rock bottom for those they suddenly have forgotten that

I just can't see as the type to go behind a coach's back to fire him and hire a new coach. His personality just doesn't fit that. And I don't see him being in a committee that isn't officially connected to the school.

Can TN just make Butch AD? He's a better AD than coach, bc he can't be worse at anything else. Then force him to rehire Kiffin? Also put Fulmer in some role within athletic department. This is how we end the Fulmer curse.

Brice's answer
Blackburn would hire Fulmer as a athletics ambassador, fund raiser similar to UF and Spurrier. Kiffin has told folks he knows he messed up here and wishes he could have another shot.

Update from Fort on coaches recruiting this week...

"Tennessee coaches are on the road and tomorrow several Tennessee coaches will be at the Mr. Footall Awards at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Cade Mays, Trey Smith, Ty Chandler and a few other big-time players will be in attendance. It's not technically a contact day since the coaches won't speak with the players.

Tennessee is scheduled to see Trey Smith midweek, with a visit from Butch Jones and several staff members likely to happen on Wednesday.

That's the big visit this week.

Cam Akers made it to Ohio State this weekend from talking to a couple of different people. What is interesting is that we're hearing Akers may not decide early and may wait to sign in February.

That means the Vols won't have to try and squeeze in an official visit in the next few days if he does that. His team will play in a state championship game on Friday so we will see what happens there.

Elsewhere, Tommy Thigpen will be in Alabama tomorrow checking in on Tennessee commitment Will Ignont. He will also see defensive end LaBryan Ray who has set his official visit for Jan. 13-15.

Also in Alabama, Bubba Thompson is scheduled to meet with Mike DeBord on Tuesday.

Both Cheyenne Labruzza and Terrell Bailey are expecting Tennessee coaches to visit them on Wednesday. We expect Robert Gillespie to be in Louisiana during that time to not only visit Tennessee's commitments, but also check in on Travis Etienne as well.

Virginia Beach-area commitments Eric Crosby and the Gaddy brothers are all expecting visits from Tennessee coaches early this week, likely Tuesday. We expect coach Azzanni and Stripling to be in the area. We wouldn't be shocked if the coaches visited defensive lineman Ryan Thaxton, who is scheduled to take an official visit to Tennessee next month.

Tennessee coaches will be in the Sunshine State later in the week. Darrian Felix is expecting coach Gillespie on Thursday. On Wednesday, James Brown is expecting Larry Scott and Jacquez Jones is expecting Zach Azzanni midweek as well.

Jones is continuing to receive attention from several other programs and could be one to watch as an official visitor at other programs come January.

Mahoney will be in West Virginia on Thursday to see Riley Locklear.

Defensive linemen Matthew Butler and Deandre Johnson both have games on Friday night in the playoffs and both are expecting some Tennessee coaches at their game.

We will continue to update coaches visits throughout the week as we find out more destinations. We expect the next two weeks before the dead period to provide some new names at new positions.

I don't necessarily think that means new official visitors this month, but likely more in January."

- Fortenberry

Seems odd Shoop isn't scheduled to visit anyone
