Great coaches/good coaches have to be prepared and have a plan for every situation .

We got the ball back down 11 with 4 minutes left.

TWO SCORES. It's doable.

Get to 3rd down with 2:31 on the clock.
Now here you have to check the chart, if we don't get 1st down, we HAVE TO run the FG unit on the field and kick it then onsides kick and have 3 timeouts remaining if we don't recover the kick....

Or you do the lower percentage, of calling two plays In huddle for your 3rd down just in cAse u do t get 1st down on 3rd...

What does Butch Jones do.... we don't kick it, nor do we have a play called so we waste damn near 40 seconds and then WE BLOW A ****ING TIMEOUT to call a 4th down play.

So now even if we get the 1st down on 4th down, we're going to likely run more clock to try and score a TD OR settle for a FG and then have to onsides KICK with less timeouts....

Lyle Jones is , WAS and has always beenUNPREPARED for game situations.

We ****ing lost to Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt

Unbelievable

Just had a heart palpitation from the anxiety and stress of this.

Not kidding. That seriously happnend.

Time to step back and reassess what is important in your life...

I will still love Tennessee and Tennessee football no matter what happens.

May have to step away from VN though. It will be too miserable here.

Hey Freak, is there anyway to turn off the mcdonalds popup on mobile ? It could be a deal breaker...

Well, even I can't defend Butch after that one. You don't lose to Vanderbilt. Period.

The real disappointment is that this loss probably sets us back at least two or three years, when you consider the likelihood that this is the beginning of the end for Butch and coupled with the effect it will have on recruiting. Like we learned in the Dooley era, recruiting doesn't hold reasonably steady here in a coaching transition like it does at Georgia and Florida. It plummets to Kentucky/Mizzou/Vandy level.

Oh well. At least Butch showed the program is capable of being revived. Could be another couple of coaches before we get one that will fully revive it though. I'm not holding my breath that the next coach will be a homerun (and that one could come much sooner than we expect).

No sense crying over spilt milk. I will attempt to enjoy the bowl game (hope the defense comes to play) and the NFL draft, which should be a good one. Then I will prepare myself for the long slog of 5 to 7 win season so ahead.

So at the beginning of the season, would anyone have guessed that defense and Shoop would be the weak point of the team?

The unprecedented number of key injuries are appalling.

One thing that does confuse me...penn state is just as good without shoop...

Hey Freak,

Seriously, is there a way to permanently block the McDonald's popup?

Never go there. No ad will change that.

Especially if you click hide and it only hides it on the screen you're on. Each time you change pages, there it is again. Then you have to wait for a while before you can click hide again...

Thanks...:salute:

Yeah that surprises me as well. Something is wrong that goes beyond the injuries. I can accept they played a role but I have wondered if his defense was too complex perhaps for our players (particularly when we had to cycle in so many new ones that probably weren't getting as much coaching in the fall). I also wondered if there were some behind the scenes friction among players and coaches. This felt like sunseri all over again. Half the defense just looked lost and like it had quit.

Given that this is a free site I've learned to live with it.

I've been away from here for awhile. It just hasn't been fun since the A&M game honestly.

I'm out on Butch. We have consistently gotten outcoached this season even in our wins. We could and probably should be a 5 or 6 win team. This has been one of the more disappointing seasons of my lifetime, which is amazing considering this programs staple has been disappointment over the last decade. It must really be satisfying to root against us. We rarely let the haters down around here.

I don't have much to say about Vandy. Congrats to them. They whooped our butts. And that sucks. Just shameful.

I wish we had our new AD now, whoever it's gonna be, because I don't trust Hart at all to make a good hire. So that likely means we are left with Butch to slog around in the no fun zone for another year.

I like the young talent on this roster. There is no way you can sit still and let recruiting fall. Which it will. And already has.

I've been a Butch apologist up until now. But I'm out. Our biggest mistake with Dooley was holding on for a year too long making the rebuild even bigger than it needed to be for Butch. But I'm not even sure how you handle a change with this AD situation. I think you have to speed that process up and make the AD hire now.

Hopefully we get this turned around. This program is still a giant and capable of being nationally relevant. But we can't let this mediocrity linger around and sink us again. Be proactive and make the changes that need to be made. The next coach could have some great weapons to play with. But maybe I'm just dreaming. I don't expect them to force Jones to out. I don't think they have the balls to fire him.

Also if there are people who still believe in Butch, I would like to hear your arguments why. I'm open to my mind being changed. But I'm just not seeing it right now. What are you holding onto at this point? Help me see it.

I assume if we're being realistic that Art Briles is permanently radioactive for the University of Tennessee, right? Does one more year change that?

What about as offensive coordinator?
I bet he is Orgeron's second call, maybe his first. Coach O was pretty specific.

We need to up our recruiting game and find someone who doesn't coach off the same chart as every high school coach in America.

Things VOL Nation has to look forward too until next football season:

The Belk car carrier music Bowl.

Butch jones hopefully bolts because they won't fire him and he'll get an extension.

Watch Lady Vols underachieve with five star players.

Watch Men Basketball overachieve and almost beat ranked teams.

Make a bad WTF hire at AD.

I can't think of anything positive right now.

Can't believe he left those kids at the podium to field all the questions. That says a lot about the guy. Coward ass move.

All we have to go on is smoke, conjecture and innuendo, but there is enough of it, so why not. The Mack Crowder, Drae Bowles, and Jalen Hurd concussion issues paint the picture of a coward.

Maybe this is nothing new.

I'm down for another late December/January coaching rumor mill. It's kinda stimulating. Who's with me?

Might as well...LET US GO!!!! SOON!!!!

I defended Butch last week with the CoL comment, but not anymore. Have we not been having practice the last few weeks? Defense still cannot get lined up right. This is the softest team I have seen in a long time. So much hope to start the season...now so much disappointment. Onward and upward. Let's hope Butch just walks away, like he did at the presser.

If they're going to go mid major I think it has to be Willie Taggart. Not sure he's ready but I could see him becoming a star. This would not be my first choice... but if we're going to go the way of "potential" and Lord knows we likely will, I think hes the most promising.

Fleck reminds me too much of Jones. And he has less head coaching experience than Taggart. Don't want him.

Honestly I would rather hire Kiffin. He could be the cheat code back to relevancy. It wouldn't feel very good, but we know he would kill it as a recruiter. And we know he would be able to stack up as a coach on the field. This bridge is likely too burned for most folks. But I don't really care personally. I just want to win. I think he would do that here. It would look desperate from a national perspective, but its similar to what Louisville did with Petrino, and nobody cared anymore once the wins started coming. He's going to likely get that opportunity somewhere else eventually. You will always live in fear wondering if he'll leave us again. But we would feel that same fear with any big name hire at this point. Chip Kelly? Can't imagine the rumors that would swirl every offseason. Where would Kiffin go? His dream job was USC and that didn't work out so well. Although I don't think they gave him a fair shot considering his roster restrictions. He was going to win big here. Maybe he would flourish with a 2nd chance.

Who knows. That might be a mistake. But it would at least be swinging for the fences. Which would be a refreshing change for this program in my opinion.

The bold is what I do not understand. This move is an embarrassment to the University, his team and HIMSELF!!! It seems either
1) he has another job and will be leaving soon (if so how does his new AD take his cowardly action) or
2) he is trying to force the UTAD hand and get fired because a coach just doesn't sabotage his career like he did.

Either way he wants out (imo) and the sooner the better for all parties.

Taggart is a really good coach. I thought he should have been considered when we hired CBJ. He has shown ability to adapted at USF. His offense was not working so he changed it.

The no huddle spread is dying. Injuries rack up on defensive players from being on field too long and good teams are figuring it out.

The fad is good for a two minute offense but it needs to go.

I think most all are in agreement that a change needs to be made sooner rather than later...who is the consensus though? The most worrying thing about it is that there is no obvious candidate to throw too much money at and make them say no.

Better act quick with Oregon, ND, Arizona, and probably others I'm forgetting joining the fray.

Dan Mullen would be worth considering. He doesn't crack under the pressure of the SEC, he coaches up 3* players, does wonders with QBs and handles the media well. Who knows what he could do with UT's facilities and resources?

And his AD just bolted to Florida.
