Just said goodbye to my wife's cousin, a massive Gator fan from central Florida who was in visiting this weekend. Reminded me that no one respects Tennessee football anymore. He chuckled about our 11 game losing streak and then at various times praised Bama, UGA, Auburn, and LSU as being other SEc programs he respects because of their winning tradition at football.

Can't choose your family but you can smack them in the back of the head!

I read some posts after a Clay Travis tweet today about the current lines on TN games. Everyone thinks we are an overhyped joke.

Vegas doesn't make lines based on hype. Other teams fans can think it's hype all they want it will just hurt them that much more to get that butt whipped

Very good point. One of the most assuring sources for this season's predictions to me. Although, I did look up the preseason line for Auburn in 2015 and...well, everyone makes mistakes.

I cannot deal when somebody walks in my house and starts bashing or disrespecting the Vols. It's happened a couple of times and I always get pissed and say something terrible. I end up looking like a jerk because it seems like I'm overreacting to "friendly" banter. But you just don't go into another mans home and talk bad about his football team. This is the south. Have some damn class.

What's the story with Auburn last year? I can't remember. I know everybody thought that one QB was going to be great, and he wasn't. But what about the rest of the team? Did they have a veteran team with talented depth all coming back from the year before? Were people just buying into the Malzahn hype? Why did everybody think they would be so good?

I really feel like we have incredibly valid reasons for extreme optimism going into this season. Not a lot we can really stress about right now.

Football is a funny game though. Everything sets up so well for us this year that I just can't help but think something is going to go wrong. The game is played with an oddly shaped ball that has a mind of its own when it bounces off the ground. We're going to have to play great. Just having talent and a depth chart that makes us all salivate isn't enough. We have to finish teams off. We're also going to need some luck. But this could be the year...

God bless the USA and the Vols

Guess it was just because they were 2 years removed from a NCG appearance, thought JJ would be an upgrade to Nick Marshall, brought in the great defensive mind that is Will Muschimp, and had a roster with a lot of recruiting stars.

The thing is they lost their whole team from '14; starting center, SEC leading rusher, Coates, and at least 1-2 starters from every position group. So yeah, mostly wishful thinking on everybody's part. Phil Steele had them at 14th in the preseason, which was lower than most, but still much too high.

Entirely different story from us. On a bad day I'll say we get 10 wins, on a good day we're 14-1.

The biggest problem Auburn had was that they were never able to find a QB who could do much very well. Jeremy Johnson looks great on paper, but he was super inaccurate and an INT machine. They probably could've made due if he was much of a running threat, but he isn't a dynamic runner. So eventually they had to make the move to Sean White, who could protect the ball better than Johnson but is less athletic and doesn't have a very big arm. Additionally, their OL had some struggles and Auburn's RBs, while solid, weren't dynamic enough to carry the offense on their own.

As far as their defense goes, they had some good talent and Muschamp is a good DC, but they didn't have very good depth and their offense often left them in some bad positions.

I think it's easy for people to point towards Auburn in 2015 as a precautionary tale for UT in 2016, but in hindsight the 2015 Auburn team was very flawed and analysts were largely assuming that many of their question marks would be non-issues because of the solid track record of Gus's offenses and Muschamp's defenses.

Just for comparison, UT's question marks are:

Down field passing
Whether WRs will be dynamic
Pass blocking improvement by the OL.

DT depth
New Starters at safety

Definitely got under my skin but I took the high road. I have a strong feeling our team will do all the talking for me on the field this fall.

In addition to what everyone else said about the QB situation two other big things happened. Duke Williams was kicked off the team in October, but it was similar to the Pig situation where he was suspended for most of the year before that - he was their top WR, and just about the only one with lots of experience, and was a preseason-SEC type guy. And then Carl Lawson got hurt again. He basically was their only pass-rushing option, and is a Barnett-type talent when he stays healthy.

GUYS GUYS GUYS GUYS GUYS!! Today... is the start of fall practice. It feels like the ****ing Catalina Wine Mixer times TEN!
