What MUST Butch Do in 2016...

What mark must Butch meet?

If we stay healthy we probably at least go 11-1 but this is the SEC these guys take a lot of punishment

2008 Al Wilson had a shoulder issue and Jamaal Lewis was out for the greater part of the season and the D tackle that caused the Arkansas fumble was HURT all season, yet we still got it done.

Some injuries are expected each year. Can't be avoided

1st and foremost is try and reduce significant injuries during preseason and have a little luck with injuries during the season........ injuries to one or two key players could derail the entire season

The Vols have had more than their fair share of injuries as of late.

Last but not least, Butch must learn to manage the game better because he didn't look like a seasoned coach at times last year and he knows it.

You are correct BUT if Kamara was injured, I am confident that Kelly would fit in nicely.
Also, if Dobbs was injured, then we would likely win all of our games because Dormady can throw every type of pass. We would average over 100 yards per game rushing and over 300 yards per game passing.
Not wishing ill fate on anyone but it may work out better if Dormady was our q.b.

MUST! Well, there's that word again. I'll take that as "What MUST Butch do to Keep His Job". But, as usual, "must" can mean a myriad of things.

To keep his job, I can't select any of the selections. He could probably go 8-4 and stay employed, especially with a UF win and later bowl win.

Hot seat? That's different
COY? That's different
Get a raise + ext? That's different.

"Must" is a powerful word. Therefore it MUST require proper explanation first.

Look I like Dormady but seriously, what basis or fact can you hang your hat on that he would remotely work out better? An O&W game? Mop duty? Talk about a shot in the dark.

Butch's job is secure for at least 3 more years....But...

Unless Dobbs and Hurd get hurt and miss half the season (perish that thought)....

1. Undefeated in the East--without question!
2. 10-2 minimum regular season record...

That's all that I think he MUST DO.....

I think possible losses will be at aTm...and Bama....
That's just my opinion and what I personally could live with.

What I WANT is to go at least 11-1 and win the
SEC championship....:salute:

I say 10-2 and win the east is where the bar is set.
However, I could see him keeping his job at 9-3 or possibly even 8-4...but the seat next year would be VERY hot if they go 8-4.

I feel a lot of folks are looking past the TAandM game...that one could cause us to stumble because Chavis knows how to defend the run well, which would mean Dobbs would HAVE to step up in the passing game...big question mark there.

FWIW - If we do get to the SECCG, Bama / Saban historically does not do well against teams he plays two times in one year.

He did against us when he was at LSU.....

Your post makes a lot of sense.
safe from what?
We could be national champions and those who always complain, will complain about the way we won.

Some will complain over 11 and 1 if the one is to Florida. Others will complain if it's Georgia that reaches the championship game.

If it means he's not getting fired, 8-4 alone will most likely ensure that.
I don't have to agree or appreciate it, but we're talking about safe from being fired I guess?

#1 is beat Florida. That is most definitely the first order of business!

#2 is get to a minimum of 10 wins. We haven't had a double digit winning season since 2007. This is a must!

For me, this is the bare minimum of what needs to happen in order to not consider the season disappointing. Anything more than this and I will be absolutely on cloud 9.

Oh my, this place could become unbearable by the middle of October.

He needs to (1) Meet expectations (2) Win all games that are close

They have to find a way to score quickly when we are behind because Dobbs can't throw the deep ball. He can only throw short and intermediate passes. Short and intermediate passes will not get the ball down the field quickly enough.

UGA disagrees with you BIG TIME.

1. Reach the SEC championship game.

2. Beat Florida.

3. Be at least 10-2 heading into Atlanta.

Do all 3 and he stays off the hot seat.

I don't think any one of the 3 is enough. For example, if he backdoors his way into the SEC championship game at 9-3 with a loss to Florida again, fans will be mad and he'll be on the hot seat in 2017.
Agreed.

Beat UF. Minium record of 10-2 for the season. I'm sorry, but 9-3 basically means you were only able to go 1-3 against the 4 good teams we play this year. With this roster, that's underachieving.

It almost feels like it's been a little longer than 8 years since that magical season...

Unless there is just an absolute meltdown and the team quits on Butch or something seriously happens off the field...Butch is safe. UT can't afford a coaching change at this point.

We could if we got Tom Herman. Look at that mans resume, it speaks for itself. He is the next great coach. Any school will be extremely lucky to hire him once he moves on from Houston.

To keep from getting fired? Not very much IMO. Just drive the bus and don't get in the way. 8-4 and CBJ is still the "caretaker" of TN football. His seat may be hot next yr but it wud take a meltdown of epic proportions to get him fired, as it shud. He has earned that with the excellent job done to date by him and his staff on and off the field.
However, I believe what CBJ will do is lead this team to 9+ reg season wins so no worry's for me.
I wud personally loooooove to crush Florida but I don't think with a loss to them or bama (or both) wud get coach fired this yr. Hate to even imagine losing to both with this team tho. A healthy team 120 should win > 9 games and beat at least one of fla/bama but still don't believe we would be replacing butch for falling short THIS yr.

Win the east. How we get there is irrelevant but it needs to happen with a team this talented.

Pretty much this. Play in SEC title game. Win 10+ games regular season.

That said, even if we win 8-9 imo Butch will be on the hot seat for at least 2 more years before he's actually let go.

Butch Jones is not the guy to take us to the top (looking at you, Richt).
