He has been good - not exceptional, and yes it can be debated. He's only beaten 2 SEC teams with winning records....that's not exceptional.

This has been the year and anyone with the sense of a blade of grass knows that.
It's like rebuilding a car and having it pretty much all done but not quite taken it out for the final test. You know what you have and say "damn that's awesome". Then som jack leg says "how can you call it awesome when you haven't tested it yet".

So yes, exceptional job of rebuilding the program. The test drive will happen this fall as expected.

1. Reach the SEC championship game.

2. Beat Florida.

3. Be at least 10-2 heading into Atlanta.

Do all 3 and he stays off the hot seat.

I don't think any one of the 3 is enough. For example, if he backdoors his way into the SEC championship game at 9-3 with a loss to Florida again, fans will be mad and he'll be on the hot seat in 2017.

2b would be beat GA. Mark this down, if we lose to GA and a West team we will not be in Atlanta. No way GA loses 3 SEC games.

The seven maxims will be manifest. The breaks will go the Vols way. In the face of defeat, impossible victories will be achieved. Never expecting more than to play the next game, the Vols will win. 15 - 0, baby! Team 120 - the Miracle Vols! Many will vie for the rights to produce and broadcast the story. It will be epic! :yahoo:

Dull reply.

If Butch goes 8-4, he could be in trouble next season. Otherwise, Hart will consider the season a success, and Butch will be fine.

I don't think Butch should be considered in trouble no matter what. He has earned his place here because he has shown nothing but improvement. I may be sheeping out, but we should all be thankful for Butch. When he came here, nobody else wanted to. Nobody wanted to coach the Vols after Kiffin and Dooley destroyed the program. Butch has taken the Vols from that place to being picked to win the east for the first time since 2005. I think everyone who is upset at the struggles last season in some games, and everyone who thinks Butch should be on the hot seat next year barring tremendous success this season, needs to sit back and remember where we were and where we are now. Butch has done an excellent job both on and off the field. I expect him to do big things this year. But even if he doesn't, he has earned our patience.

I believe 8-4 tells us where we are headed. Reality is a coaching change within a couple years.

I think we win the East this year and Butch is on solid ground. At least job security at UT wise.

I'm a strong believer in trajectory and IMO, if we win the east and get to Atlanta, we will have taken a giant positive step forward. If we get to 10 wins and beat Florida this year, it's still a more modest step forward but we're still on the upswing. If we finish at 9-4 again, then we've flat lined. Anything less than that and we're losing ground again.

No SEC title game appearance and the staff has little to point at to boost recruiting. Must be in the SEC title game or IMO this huge boost so many is sure will come by NSD, doesn't.

Haven't read all the post but if this in any way implies CBJ job would be in jeopardy if he doesn't perform at a high level is completely out of touch with reality. THE LAST THING UT HAS A STOMACH FOR IS HIRING A NEW FOOTBALL COACH...just plain silly!!

Win the East 33.82%
Beat Florida 21.74%
Doesn't Matter 13.53%
9-3 or better 12.56%

81.65%

Using the data, if we have a 9-3 regular season, beat Florida, make the SECCG (and lose), and lose the bowl game, roughly 4 out
of 5 Vol fans will not have CBJ in the hot seat....

With 1 in 5 griping....seems pretty accurate for a small sample size.

The win/loss record we end up with this year and what rivals we beat or lose to will be more of a direct affect on wether or not the Vols can sustain success for the future imo. Elite recruits see UT waste all this talent by going 8-4 or 9-3 with losses to fla, ga, and bama, we can hang up the idea that we are "back" anytime soon. Cant sale early playing time the next few years and we just cant count on legacy's to fill the roster every year. No doubt underachieving would put alot of doubt in peoples minds about Butch but the big blow would be that more than likely in a few years we would not have this kind of talent on the field anymore and that would be the downfall of CBJ job here. On the bright side, win the east, beat florida and at least make it to a nice bowl and i think Butch lands a solid class again and life is good as a UT fan and this team is very capable of that. I think with CBJ installing the game plan (which imo he is great at), and on gameday trusting his OC & DC to coach the game, i really like our chances of a special season and many more to follow. This is a VERY important season that makes or breaks TN football for the next good while imo.

Unless there is just an absolute meltdown and the team quits on Butch or something seriously happens off the field...Butch is safe. UT can't afford a coaching change at this point.
Doesn't mean he couldn't be on the hot seat considering hot seat means a buncha pissed off fans.

Y'all must beat FL or the walls might crashing down on Butch. Otherwise may need to win the rest of em.

Beating Florida is the number one priority for this season.

Yes. But it's not the end all be all. If he beats Florida, but then loses to Georgia, A&M, and Alabama, he's on the hot seat.

He needs to do more than simply beat Florida. He needs to get to Atlanta and win at least 10 games.

Anything less is a FAILURE.

Not really. Cause some of us would have picked multiple options but had to stick to one.

I chose the option that he must win the east. But I wouldn't be happy with 9-3. That would mean we went 1-3 in the games that mattered and backdoored our way to Atlanta.

With the level of talent we have, anything less than 10-2 is unacceptable.

For once I agree. The coaches could take the season off and this squad would still win 9-10 games.

I think putting Butch on the hotseat every season he doesn't attain an SEC championship is so stupid. And that moron that says it's unacceptable for Butch to "back his way in" to an SECCG must be high. He should beat Florida and win 9 easy, which is doable with a healthy team. I don't want excuses from Coach, but I don't think we should fire him if he isn't a national championship winning coach every year. Would you fire a scientist who didn't win the Nobel prize every year, if every year he made a better discovery. Would you fire a police chief if crime isn't eradicated after a few years if crime dropped every year he was police chief? I know some of you would and I expect to be 11-1 going to ATL. But I'm not gonna hang CBJ if we're not. I wish I could get through to you silly people thinking we should fire every coach every year were not perfect. CPF only won one NC and I believe most would agree he was a darn good coach.
