'17' TN ATH Tee Higgins (Clemson commit)

I don't remember the recruit, but it was stated that a guy choosing between us and another school wanted to see if we'd beat their offer. Jones said he doesn't play that game. I believe that. There are dirty programs. We aren't one of them.

Jones is a straight shooter. He fought harder than any coach I'm aware of to get the players the biggest stipend possible. He wants the guys to have spending money. He also wants to do it by the rules.

I'm with the ETSU guy here. These are nothing but rumors at this point. And even if other programs aren't playing by the rules (and I'm sure not all do), that has no bearing on our program.

Just my :twocents:

I used to have a buddy in the service that was convinced every D1 program out there cheated and payed their players, except at his team of course. "Everyone else cheats but <insert your favorite team here>! They are as clean as a whistle!" It's normal to want to defend the school of choice, but a little naive to think when a kid gets to be a 4 or 5 star it doesn't go on. I do think many if not most 3 stars and below do go to a school based off tradition or because they like the program. The "bidding wars" at that level likely don't happen or don't happen that often to the levels of higher rated recruits.

But in reality, it goes on and it's just something that "is." At the information OV brought to the table certainly bears a little closer look than just sour grapes. It begs the question of how or rather why a highly rated recruit could go from being dedicated to one team (UT in this case) to another school practically overnight. Call it my suspicious side, but it does make me ask "what changed in the paradigm?" And we use Occam's Razor in the case of money which certainly fits the theory. And it very well could be we got outbid.

Still maintains its gonna be an excellent 2017 class.

I am fairly negative about recruiting but I agree with Matthews. This class is going to be very good come NSD. Some guys we have will get bumbs and if our season goes as expected, then we will be good to go.

I don't like Clemson. I've lived among them all my life. I really don't like the way this recruitment and Hunter Johnsons played out. Orange Carpet Day must have been just a show for Tee. Shallow and all.

The ACC is like the Bi10. Two good teams and yet they get attention for playing Wake Forest, NC State, Georgia Tech, Virginia etc etc.

Oh no didn't you hear? Their level of competition doesn't matter. Clemson is just so much better than everyone else. Too bad Tennessee has to play in an tougher conference or else we could get automatic 10+ wins every year.

Their level of competition doesn't really matter because they have the talent to compete with anyone in the SEC or any other conference and they've shown that the last few postseasons. You remember the last 2 OU teams we lost to? Clemson beat both of them soundly, beat LSU, beat O$U.

Clemson has recruited the talent well enough to win 9-10 games every year while playing in the SEC.

Man, can we just take this thread out back and kill it? It's getting depressing seeing it be the top thread every day. It's over. Let's move on lol.

Also, pretty tired of every one *cough* VolFreakJosh *cough* putting Clemson down and acting like the only reason they are any good is because they play in the ACC. That narrative is tired and dumb. They came just a handful of plays away from beating Bama and took Oklahoma to the woodshed which we failed to do. Clemson is a good program right now, and trying to explain away their success to just being in the ACC is dumb.

If we're talking about what could have been (almost beating Bama), then let's look at the rest of their season too. The squeaked by Louisville. Barely beat Notre Dame in flood-like conditions. Beat South Carolina by less than a TD. Beat NC because of an incorrect offsides call on an onside kick late in the game.

Maybe they could have beaten Bama; maybe they could have lost half their games also. Just if we're playing the what-if game. They had many bounces go their way last year. I don't think they'll be so fortunate this year.

It's all speculation because it's not provable, but I don't think there is any way they could hold up in the grind of the SEC. And in that same token, we would have a much, much better record in their weak-ass conference. But I wouldn't trade playing in the SEC.

Clemson, Auburn and Ole Miss. Bringing the stench big time lately.

Just to tie two threads together, everyone knows where Ole Mi$$'s QB one "Swag Kelly" started his college career, Right??

SIAP but...

Did GFW delete his account? I did a quick search to see if he's posted anything lately. I don't find him at all.

When Higgins made his announcement, I had similar thoughts that he could be flipped back to the Vols. However, the more I read about him and his family, the more I'm convinced that we need to move on. I saw this quote about him this morning and it just reinforced all that we have seen.

"there was apparently a concerted effort to mislead Tennessee's coaches, current players and the kid's friends on the team, and lifelong VOL fans the kid's family knew. I’m all for a kid going to the school of his choosing. However, the events leading up to his decision seem to stick it in the face of the kid's "dream school"." This is from X this morning on the Basilio blog. Recommend you read the whole X narrative.

There are lots of really talented WRs out there who have a legitimate interest in the Vols. We want kids of character who want to be a Vol. Time to move on and put the Higgins thread in the garbage can where it belongs. Sad. Really sad. Disappointing.

Obviously the SEC is a tough conference and I don't deny that, it's easily the most brutal, BUT it gets exhausting listening to every single person in the South act like no other conference knows how to play football. Clemson might not go 12-0 in the SEC, but they are extremely talented and seem to only be getting stronger with their 2017 recruiting class.

They easily can compete with our top teams (ex. Bama). They might not win every week, but too many people just discount another conference because "dey not SEC leet status".

Clemson would do especially well if they played in the East. They could easily beat USCe, Mizzou, Vandy, and UK year in and year out, and with the talent level they have acquired lately, there is no reason to believe they wouldn't be able to beat UF, TN, or UGA.

Yeah, Clemson only beat USCe by a touchdown, but it took a lucky forced fumble with time expiring in the 4th quarter for us to beat them in Neyland. So I wouldn't exactly use that as an example. And Notre Dame beat LSU in the Music City just two years ago. So, once again, we aren't the only conference that has good football. Just probably the overall best.

A lot easier to gear up for one or two games a year than to play stiff competition week in and week out. None of the Clemson homers factor in dealing with injuries and player attrition when beating their chest about their bowl accomplishments.

The difference is not the teams at the top as much as it is the teams in the middle. The top two teams in the ACC are Florida State and Clemson. If you want to take Bama and say LSU, you can call it a wash. But our middle teams are much, much tougher than what the ACC has. You can't just gear up for one or two tough games, but 6 or 7 tough games every year.

Yep, exactly.

Nor mention having an additional month to prepare.
