Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXVI

I saw one of D4H's posts because someone quoted it. Is he really telling other grown men what to do? Guarantee he wouldn't do it in person.

I agree. I've been holding out hope all summer that it was all too early to tell, but this doesn't seem right. Something just isn't working at the moment in recruiting for us.

I haven't heard many people talk about how we haven't had anyone drafted to the NFL the last two years. I wonder if that has more significance in negative recruiting against us than folks realize.

We need to win this fall - I agree with the sentiment that winning will cure all wounds. But I am definitely surprised by the current state of recruiting - I thought we got over the winning hump with the 2015 season's top 25 finish, winning 2 out of 4 over ranked opponents, 6 game win streak, ending the losing streak to GA, crushing the 13th ranked team in a New Year's bowl, etc.

Bottom line: I think at this moment in time, Tennessee is still held in low opinion by recruits. I think we are viewed in the category of Arkansas, Mississippi State and South Carolina by outsiders and casual football fans.

I know we view ourselves in the category of Bama, LSU, Georgia and Florida, but we have to win a lot of ball games for others to view us that way.

Damn I hate logic! I was hoping Butch would click his ruby slippers 3 times and all these TN recruits would come running. :eek:hmy:

Dobbs - top 10
Sutton - top 10
Hurd - mid 1st
Barnett - late 1st

Kamara - mid 2nd
JRM - late 2nd

Weisman - 4th
Croom - 4th
Vereen - 6th
Foreman - 6th

What will make Dobbs a top 10 pick? Sutton definitely won't be based on the grade from this year. His athleticism is what it is...great late to early second round pick though.

Something does seem off. IMO we had shown the improvement needed to sell the future to recruits. For whatever reason they aren't buying. Some of the board seems sure winning ten will all a sudden flip some kind of switch for the top recruits that 9 wins obviously didn't, and they will come running to UT.

Based on Gibbs thread, it sounds as if that could actually happen with him. We need to show him we are not a flash in the pan and have truly turned the corner. GA still pulling top instate recruits even though they haven't truly done anything in years and have a new coach who hasn't been the lead dog in a single game... For Akers, UT should be a no brainer with the possibility of playing time and a run heavy O right now. I can see where we need to prove to WR's this season we will throw the ball and they won't just be blocking dummies. Smith should see us as potential early playing time as well... something has negatively impacted these kids. Guess we can only hope our staff keeps recruiting hard-- If we take care of business this Fall and kids still jump ship, then there should be red flags going up all over the place. Sounds like we have some incoming frosh that are already turning heads, so maybe we will still be Okay if we don't sign a top 10-15 class, but next season will be a must have.
Who knows, maybe Hurd stays... crazier things have happened... It sounds crazy, until you take a look at the long list of other top tier RB's that could be coming out at the end of the year. If Hurd plays his senior season, he could come out and be the #1 RB pick in the draft.

How is the state of TN looking in terms of talent for next year's class, '18 class? Prolly not equal to this year, but is it decent? Sorry, haven't heard or paid attention much to the '18 class. Maybe we can rack up in state next year.

You have to remember this is the silly season. I was watching the SEC channel last night which was all Tennessee and got all fired up!

If Higgins or any other recruit grew up being a Vol fan it is going to be really hard to turn us down as the season goes, if we do what we should this year. Who would not want to be a part of that watching how well we are doing and how much fun the Tenn players are having. JMO

At this point, not nearly as strong. Long way to go through obviously.

247 has the state of TN with 1 5*, 5 4*, and about 7 3* to date. We currently have a 5*Mays, and a 3* Taylor onboard.

UT has never in recent memory built their teams with instate talent. So while I agree it would have been nice to have some instate slam dunks that were great players we shouldn't see a class not full ot TN players as the sky falling.

If we win we will get better recruits filling out this class and their will be attrition w current commits

If we underperform there will be attrition w current commits and likely some lower rated ones getting on board or we just don't sign as many as signing a full 25 means you have to have attrition w the current roster

I say we win, lose at least 5 of the top 10 in state players, yet still close a class ranked @ 10 or so

Then they would be fools.

Only way to flip the narrative is to win the SEC championship.

10-2 does nothing.

I agree with you. Just expressing surprise we aren't reaping those benefits already with last year's finish and all the preseason hype.

1. Dobbs has all the physical tools. Its all about putting it together for a monster year in 2016. I think he does it. We win the national title and he wins the Heisman.

2. Who cares what Sutton's grade was last year? Those things change. Khalil Mack didn't come out in 2013 because he was projected as a 3rd rounder. He came back for his senior year and went #5 overall in 2014. Guys move up all the time.

I think Cam Sutton returns to his sophomore form. Plus winning a national title will elevate everyone's stock.

The kids don't care about being close.

If they care about winning, there are others programs that are already proven winners.

If they care about playing time, there are other programs with more readily available playing time.

If they care about the NFL, almost everyone has had better success than us the last 2 years.

We're in a recruiting no man's land. Its either win big or go home this year for Butch and company.

Win the SEC/national title and we're off to good times once again. Lose 2-3 games and we'll be back to irrelevance once again.

Gosh, thanks for setting me straight. I realize he was a top recruit eventho some of the self appointed VN gurus decided he wasn't good enough. I assumed CBJ wouldn't use a scholarship if he didn't deserve it. I hope the kid is All-American and goes to the NFL if that's what he wants. Glad you're patroling the net making the world safe from snark. If your snark sensitive, don't get on this site.
